Description
Something a little different, an uptempo, funky, fun piece from the songwriting archives (wrote it in 1984, finally got to putting it down, just finished the recording a couple of nights ago)... This is also for my upcoming CD, as yet to be titled. Features Adam Rafferty on the guitar solo, and Austin Vickrey on alto sax. I'm doing everything else.

Sweet, Smooth but Hot!
Too cool from the slap bass to the nice sax to your very good six string. Some nice bends mixed in with some great melodic runs makes for a nice listen. A musical conversation twixt yourselves as it were. Do you have all the parts written out or are you improvising within a given framework?

Some of it is charted
The "A" section is charted, the "B" section is improvised, and the solos are improvised through the whole AABA form. Thanks man!!

Crisp, clean production, Phil, and some great solo performances from your collab partners. I really like your slap bass style of playing, and the mix is great. Really enjoyed - thanks!

and moves in a highway manner....

Well by the intro
I wouldn't come close to calling this Down-N-Out. Lively and bouncy is more like it.

I feel like this should be one some jazz station with the best of them. Really cool in every way and I'm not much of a jazz enthusiast but this just rocks (if I can say that for a jazz piece).

Extremely nicely done!

Thank you sir!
The title is actually ironic. The tune started out as a ballad, and the sax player in my band at the time said "This just sucks; but if we made it funky and took it uptempo it might fix it. So we did, and it did, and the rest is history. :)

For me,
smooth jazz is a thing of the city. Though there's hustle and bustle, everything is taking place in its own time and with its own coolness. So, I see people everywhere, doing their own thing but joined in a complex intermingling of life just happening, as it must. This was very fine and holds up despite being born twenty years before. Thanks.

Big Bass...
I like it. Catches me from the first note. The sax solo is very nice. You've mixed it to sound like a live recording (which it is). Against the bass, though, as the number progresses, that bass gets a little muddy sounding to me. The solo guitar is terrific, too. Overall, a really pleasant, upbeat track that's a lot of fun to listen to. Just wish that bass were somehow a little "sharper"...more focused general sound. (I may be the only one — see above — who feels this way. Hey. What do I know?) In any event, this is a pro track to be sure.

In-n-up
Nifty piece. You play an excellent slap bass. Enough bottom, and not too much snapped notes. Or whatever you call those string pulls. Very tasteful.

I must say that I found the guitar solo a tad disappointing. Most of it would have been a decent bass solo if played an octave lower. The sax otoh was cool.
