Description
OK, going as far back into the songwriting archives as it is possible to go. This one is special for me because, believe it or not, it is the first song I ever wrote. It was 1983, I was just out of high school, and I wrote it for the girl I was seeing at the time, who was basically Jean-Pierre Rampal in the body of a teenage girl. She could sight read anything I put in front of her; it was really quite something to hear her play, just incredible technique and sound. Anyway, I finally was able to record the tune in a way that fully realized my original vision for it. Just finished it the other night, after it sitting, unjustified and lonely, for 30 years. Features several good friends: Stacey Knights on flute, Dan O'Hara taking the keyboard solos, and Douglas Lichterman taking the guitar solo... I'm the rhythm section.

The artwork is a drawing of Miku Hatsune; an anime "Vocaloid" character that my 9 year old daughter drew; her current obsession.

Smooth
Flute is smooth and jazzy, kudos to Stacey for a command performance. Style reminds me a lot of Spyro Gyra. Thanks.

Thanks!
Spyro (especially of that era; Morning Dance, Catching the Sun, etc) was one of my big formative influences. I copped many a drum lick from Eli Konokoff.. :)

Classic smooth jazz. The flute is gorgeous; the guitar calm and tuneful, keyboards roll along beautifully, bass and drums sit right where they need to be and give excellent support to the lead instruments. All good, Phil!

An ancient gem...
Sometimes there are magical moments from our youth that's we've jotted down and then never fully realized. The perspective of time helps to shape them with maturity and expression that we've had to grow into. This song is, apparently, one of those magical moments in time that you've quite beautifully crafted with access to contemporary digital technology. Lots of very nice things going on here, not the least of which is that mellow flute line...and the following guitar solo. This is a most-pleasant track on the ears, a harbinger, to be sure, of your later penchant for smooth jazz. You had the feeling right there in 1983. No surprise, then, that you are continuing to write and record at such a high level of accomplishment and skill.

Thanks very much!
I'm doing these old recording to try to shake the dust off my writing bug; my tune Embryo I did in February was my first instrumental new music in 4 years!

Interesting!
I used to listen to a lot of Johnny Mathis, maybe that's where you're hearing it; they shared an arranger! Yes, Abby is nine, she turns 10 at the end of October. Thanks for the listen and the nice comments!

It is always great to hear some real flute after hearing so many MIDI emulations. I always like the way the bass sits in your mixes, too. Nice drive, without being overly conspicuous. The keyboard solo is a highlight, as well. Another fine excursion down the smooth road. Thanks, Phil. regards, Peter.

Yeah, I feel ya...
I absolutely love that I have access to some really exceptional wind and brass players now, I hated having to use synths for them, no matter how good the patch is, it's still not quite the same. Thanks for the fine feedback!!

Such a great melody and arrangement, especially considering where you were with life experiences at 18. This is smart, and chocked full of talent with the likes of yourself and gifted friends. I couldn't even think of writing anything this mature. Everything sits nicely in the mix to my ears. Just and all around great piece!

Thank you!
It's funny you phrased it that way.. When I wrote the tune, I heard it in my head, fully realized (except the solos of course), but figured that I'd never ever get to actually hear what was playing in my head, due to my own limitations as a player and there not being home recording technology like we have, and not having a stable of great side players to choose from. And yet 30 years later, I managed to do just that. It made me very happy, that's one of the other reasons I'm going through a lot of my older material, to finally be able to really hear it...

Very nice!
This could be the soundtrack to any inspiring Studio Ghibli film. Weightless, positive and boy - really well put together! All instruments fit perfectly and the solo instruments really add.
Great job! That goes for the drawing too...9 years old? What a talent!

Isn't it incredible how you took that idea from 'way back' and were finally able to realize it in such an entirely satisfying recording. Musicianship is fantastic (real instrumentalists!) and the production is top notch.

Raining In The City
...but an early autumn morning rain, that distinctive scent of wet streets and warm restaurants drifting among art students carrying oversized portfolios full of dreams and ideas. Hissing streetcars and wet gleaming sidewalks, and for a perfect rhythmic moment it all seems perfect.

What a moment. There's a place and time captured so evocatively here, I can smell and taste the long distant realty of my own first year in college and a certain girl I've never forgotten.

And as far as revisiting 30-year old musical pieces... (grin) ...I hear you!

First - great drawing
then the song - wonderful piece of music and excellent performances all around. Did your then girlfriend play on the original recording? Would love to hear the '83 version some day.

No, she didn't.
It never got recorded at all till 1985. That was on 4-track with a few friends, and it was not great. I did another version by myself (all synths, no flute player) in 1987, and that one was pretty horrid too. It sat dormant until just now. Thanks!! I never got her to play on a recording, but we did audition for the Disney theme parks by playing the Claude Bolling suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio (me on bass, our friend Jon on piano), so we did play out together once or twice... Thanks man!!

Nice and flutey fruity
........but just a word of warning about the title......putting wind after someones name has a whole new and unexpected meaning in the UK........Breeze, Zephyr, ok ....Wind ...has the schoolboy in us (well some of us non-adults)rolling in the aisles........which is a shame cos it's a lovely tune and beautifully played....it may just be me Vicar, or others might just be being too polite....
