Description
Last monday the third season of the Icelandic documentary show "Málið" (="The Issue") premiered on Icelandic TV.
As you might've guessed, I'm currently writing the music for this season (I also wrote for the second season last January) and so I wanted to share with you a short cue from the show.

This short cue was written for a show telling the story of a small boy growing up with his alcoholic mother in Vestmannaeyjar in the 80s. Both the son and the mother tell their story, intertwined with both interviews with specialists in various social fields as well as with reenacted dramatizations, so the show gets quite cinematic at times.

This cue, which was greatly inspired by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and recorded in the end of August, first appears in a scene where the mother describes her most depressing drinking binge; the night before her meeting with social services who were planning to take her son away from her.

Enjoy!

Fantastic
I could hear the Arvo Pärt influence, although if you had told me that this is an Ólafur Arnalds track - I would have believed that too!

It sounds like all strings are recorded live. I'd love to hear about your process - how many musicians? individually recorded? And did you sit down with pen and paper like 'real' composers do? :)

The mix sounds full, clear and organic. Perfect.

Impressive, especially in this song is the simplicity of your composition. How at first it appears to be an effective score serving the scene, but soon the development of the theme offers a wonderful range of emotions and allows for the video to come to live on a higher, deeper level. Which is the sign of a rather excellent score. Really fantastic, Einar!

Yeah, I wanna hear about the process too..
:) Beautiful, spare, haunting, lovely. It's a rich, sonorous and warm texture; crafted with wonderful focus and performed with intense emotion. Love it...

Impressionistic
Very good background for the subject - nice use of dynamics and tone! Were these live recorded or very good samples?
