Gang of One

Description
A cross between Gang of Four and Talking Heads, with other stuff I probably didn't notice. It's about having lots of pals when you're young, but ending up with one best friend when you get married, if you're as lucky as me. Also, it's about bullies isolating themselves. And it's a bit funky. I hope.

Lyrics
Gang of One

A gang of seven - my idea of heaven
Too many tricks - now we are six
Poor old Mark did not survive - now we are five
Igor just can't take no more - four
Fiddly dum, fiddly dee - three
We never liked the things you do - then there were two
Who you lookin' at, son?

Nyeh, nyeh, nyeh!
Hope you had fun in your gang of one.

Two's a crowd, but it's allowed.

Hey, Sam
My voice is a bit wonky on account of yelling at kids, but I'm happy to have had time to do this at all. Like I said, I can't tell what has surfaced. XTC again? Brill! Oh, yes, it's "Nigel", isn't it? Always a pleasure, Mr Dixon.

Gang of one
Neat construction to the lyrics. Lots of interest in the arrangement - nifty sounds! I like the guitars. Good one, Graham!

9 to 5
It wasn't quite that from start to finish, but not far off. It is good to be organised. I was after a funkier sound than usual, and hope I succeeded. Thanks for your support, Philip.

It done bonked me on the head...
...man, this sounds good Graham! It's one of those things where the mix contributes greatly to the overall impact of the arrangement--this is a real delight to listen to just for how well balanced everything sounds, but heck, this track/song is so well done, even hearing it just plain flat would be a guaranteed good time. Love the lyrics; they are the kind where at first glance seem perhaps nonsensical until you take them and develop your own ideas about what they mean. Superb and full marks to you here; you always do great stuff! Michael

I'm learning
The speed with which I concocted and recorded this is thanks to the advice of certain MacJammers, who will by now be too embarrassed to be named (Sam, Llarion and Daugrin). I think lyrics should be ambiguous and open to interpretation, and that the music should assist the meaning somehow. I was after an urgent progression up to the mocking reggae, followed by some sort of resolution (happy marriage, in my case). If it makes some sort of sense to someone else, yay! Now I'm off to listen, downoad and fave your Coffee song. Cheers, Michael.

Gang of One
Really impressive, Graham. You are mining a very creative vein at the moment. It is slightly left of field, but with Sam, Daug and Phil as the men in the white hard hats supervising that is no surprise :-) Great sound. Clever lyrics. Thanks, Peter.

G'day, Oz
... and somehow I reincarnated Sam's P.E. teacher! Yikes! Our P.E. teachers are all nice folks, I'm sure you're pleased to know. I've been writing with the bass first, which makes everything a bit livelier, I think. (I have another on the way with the uke as the main inspiration, and that's taking longer.) Thanks for listening. I'm off to hail Johnny.

See! I'm not the only one hearing the XTC influence. 1:53 went totally into XTC land. Downloaded!

XTC own that chord sequence
Even though I was thinking 311 at that point! I'm perfectly happy to be compared to XTC - "Easter Theatre" is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Cheers, Mr Bass.

Beware the gang
They'll turn on you, especially if you deviate from the dress code (wellington boot on head, underpants outside regular pants). Glad you enjoyed it, Mark.

Harry Nilsson
who I admire muchly, did a couple of reductive songs (Ten Little Indians was one) and there's something attractive and involving about a song that counts down. I'm glad I piqued your fancy, Mag.

Working Title
For once, the working title stuck and became the main idea. It practically wrote itself. So if and when I ever publish it I will have to credit it to Exton/Itself. Thanks for stopping by, Les.

Man I like that beat
And the guitar tones sound great. Nice job on the vocal delivery and that break is bizarre in a good way.

Cheers, Feel
I should have had an instrumental bit to introduce the Gang of One part, and will do that when I revise the song. And I had to strangle that poor cheap guitar to get it to sound like a thing, but in the end it was all right.

Yep, totally funky.
Ahh, but isn't this a blast!! I know it doesn't sound like them, but I could hear Devo doing this song. I got nothing in terms of notes, you drilled this one deep. Super fun!!!

Are we not mental?
I don't know a lot about Devo - I enjoyed their version of "Satisfaction", but preferred the Residents' one. I have both on 45. Where was I? Glad you enjoyed it, Llarion.

I was trying to make some funkier sounds, so I'm in Blockhead territory. Thanks for listening, Mr "Three Accordions" Jarvis.

Gang Of Four
were at Leeds Uni when I was there. I don't know if they got much chance to study, as they were always gigging. I never managed to get into a show, so popular were they. They did an album with a drum machine, and it may have sounded a bit like what I done. Any road, thanks for listening, Bob.

Hey, you, get off of my cloud!
I love the reductive sequence. Yet the structure doesn't inhibit the blast of funkiness this song evolves into. Nice work!

Countdowns are cool
I expect you could do a whole album of songs with countdowns and similar sequences (2525 goes in the other direction). I'm glad you like this one, Warren.
