Description
So in at least one major Spider-Man story arc, Peter Parker is dead, killed by his arch enemy Norman Osborn and his cronies while trying to protect this family. Spider-Man has always been my favorite comic hero, and this series is especially good. The conflict that drives Spider-Man resonates with me - how does a person grow up? Why should they grow up? What's so good about adulthood? Kids (most kids in America anyway) have the privilege to observe and critique their elders in a vacuum of the responsibilities that so complicate adult life. As a result, to the average American teenager, most adults are unbearable compromisers and hypocrites. Imagine if the teenager in question had super powers. Right.

Anyway, the story in a nutshell is that Peter Parker 'becomes' Spider-Man, actually acknowledges some amount of responsibility for his ability, when he makes a decision to allow a convenience store robber to go because 'it's not his problem'. The robber famously shoots Peter's uncle Benjamin while fleeing the scene. Peter realizes his mistake, and Spider-Man is born. And the story of Spider-Man then sort of follows the five stages of grief. Ending, at least in the Ultimate Spider-Man arc, with the circle completed as Peter dies defending his family, all of whom he by now considers fully his 'problem', along with most of the citizens of New York. It's a poignant moment, and deserves a poignant song.

So…the song uses a tried and true progression, one that always makes me a little wistful and a little sad but in that good way. And I tried to resist the temptation to overdo the instrumentation. Just enough for atmosphere. Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement.

Lyrics
I'm so tired of trying to be a man
tired of pretending that's what I am
grim and knowledge-tough
when a joke costs half as much
I'm so tired of trying to be a man

Aunt May I did my best
to make up for Uncle Benjamin
I was a child and no good
but now I'm dying what I should have been back then -
a Spider man

When you're a kid and you're hurt you call for mom
iodine and band-aids and leaving the light on
grow up and the comfort is yours to bring
and when they hit you asking questions
you just sing, sing, sing, oh

Aunt May I did my best
to make up for Uncle Benjamin
I was a child and no good
but now I'm dying what I should have been back then -
a Spider man

You used to ask me what's the world coming to?
oh, same thing it's always been up to
so much of it is an acquired taste
toss it back and hide the face you wanna make
The face you wanna make

Aunt May I did my best
to make up for Uncle Benjamin
I was a child and no good
but now I'm dying what I should have been back then -
a Spider man

Great feel propelled by a simple but very effective bass line. The verse lyrics are very well crafted and universal. Catchy chorus with a sweet flowing melody. A very cool source of inspiration.

requiem for a webhead
I like the more stripped down approach early on, gives the last chorus a nice punch with the instruments coming together. nice break with the lower register guitar solo and the pretty vocal part after that.
Sorry I can't be more critical as requested, love it as is!

You got to take inspiration from wherever it comes and this has certainly paid off. Fine, laid back groove and a quality mix. Your vocal work is really good on this, too, Craig. Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

Ultimate Spider - Man
Interesting take on this classic story. I like the sparse atmosphere and limited instrumentation, it allows the vox to breathe and tell the story. Nice mix, well done!

Excelsior!
You are quite clearly a True Believer, and very likely a 'Nuff Sayer, if not a fully - fledged MMM. I like the wistful nature of this along with the very notion of writing a song based on a favourite comic.

Cool song
The way it almost all falls apart as the guitar solo trickles out is KILLER! The whole thing is really fragile, and sounds something like REM meets Vic Chesnutt meets I don't know who... specific and unplaceable at the same time. Great vocal, great delivery of everything. Thanks!

damn
this is outstanding. i always love your songs, but I also really appreciate your sensibilities and your world view. "Kids (most kids in America anyway) have the privilege to observe and critique their elders in a vacuum of the responsibilities that so complicate adult life." that is downright philosophical.

BTW I love that guitar solo. it's pieced together with different sounds and really gives a feel for a kid with no responsibility sitting around playing just for the fun of it.
