Description
After the bombast of the last track I did, I wanted something simple and quiet... so covered an old song of mine. I'm not around much, so feel free not to comment! One take vocal, and the quickest mix ever, so excuse any mistakes.

Lyrics
Back to the bedroom baby,
Fear of birth and the space where you laid me,
Your sex is shining like a comet in the dirty sky.
When today won't listen
And tomorrow's hidden
Where is the sting, where's the victory
The victory?

We're gonna die, we're gonna die
And leave the chaos of our lives.

When the money's gone babe,
Our Clyde and Bonnie days outgunned babe,
When all the love has been made.
When today's a prison and tomorrow's hidden
Johnnie saw the skull beneath the skin
Bequeathed the meaning, Bequeathed the meaning.

We're gonna die, we're gonna die
And leave the chaos of our lives.

And you will

Wipe the tears from our eyes.

Cut ups
I wrote this in pre-iPad days, so I didnt use the cut ups. The 'Johnnie' line is appropriated from a T.S. eliot poem, cant remember which, but the line was:

Webster saw the the skull beneath the skin

which I always loved, and the Bunnymen started the song My White devil with:

Johnnie webster was, one of the best there was

... so thats where the line comes from!

Clean
and stripped to the heart.
The quite that speaks to the soul.
In so many ways beautiful.
Thank you Steve.

The arrangement lays bare the lyrics and lets their evocative impact take center stage. A quick mix that cuts deep. Fine post. Thanks, Peter.

The Victory
Wow Steve,

This song has evolved over the years. The first version was uncategorizable, the Estellie version was unimaginably delicious and this one is just plain stupid. Great work! I think a song is special if you keep coming back to it again and again. I can see you performing this live in some big hall with Estellie walking in off the side and joining in.

It's funny to me how much attention you get for your spectacular vocal work, but you really are a great musician, even if you're playing on a mac keyboard or how ever you're set up in the studio.

I love this and can't wait to hear the next version!

Grim
but strangely uplifting. I like the spare arrangement. It sounds like the last track on an energetic album - there to calm you down a bit after a hectic listen.

Cool tune, and well done. Your performance is excellent, and the minimal approach works very well. Enjoyed!

This is real nice ... enjoy the simplicity of it yet it still has a strong production. Your voice with the piano is very strong. An excellent song ... quick doesn't allow time for over thinking ....

sweet
production sounds great to me. I like your choice for the drum track and the piano is also a nice choice. voice is always smooth and alluring. wish i could do that leap to falsetto in the middle of a line. this song needs to be placed in a quality dramatic TV show, I can imagine hearing it while the credits roll, and then 2 weeks after it airs: you're a star.

I don't think
I've ever listened to an Echoroom track and not enjoyed it Steve.

Good God, Steve....
your voice clutches my heart strings and plays fiercely upon them.
Heavy but righteous music. There must be more than this you ask when you full well know that coming together is what gives everything else meaning. Thanks.

Fine track
Spare but solid vibe to hang those vox on. Very moving performance: those 'one take wonders' are often the best ones! Thanks for this.
I need to go listen to the other one now.

Well...
I feel like such a moax because you favored my song and to tell you the truth, the other night, I left a comment here, but the site is so slow to register it, I hit the refresh button to see if that would do the trick and it deleted my comment. I am guilty of being too lazy at the time to have rewritten the whole comment again! Maybe you got a notification in your e-mail (but no comment from me of course!), I'm not sure, but I was quite impressed with this piece, particularly with the lyrics, which are so stark and vivid and tell quite a tale! I mean, you can't help but feel what's going on in this narrative. Your vocals and music were equally as effective, and I think the spare arrangement is all that was needed, which worked out very well here. Very excellent work (this is one good "quick mix" by the way!) and thanks for sharing it.

This is so cool. I LOVE it! I listen to the original all the time on my iPhone, so I know it well. That makes the re-take on it all the more excellent. The restraint you've shown here is awesome. It's sooo hard not to fill things up with harmonies, backing vocals, pads, fills, loops. The simplicity of this is so refreshing. It just highlights your amazing vocal chops even more. Gorgeous.
