Friendship (with Phil Gardner)

Description
This song was recorded in 1972 on an LP called Gabriel's Mother's Highway. The title track was written by Arlo Guthrie. Earlier this year, I was onstage at the Port Fairy Folk Festival with Arlo during a "Meet the Artists" concert (each of the artists performed a couple of songs as a taster for their later concerts) and had the opportunity to get Arlo to sign a copy of the record. It had taken 40 years, but we got there eventually!

"Friendship" was the final song on the LP. It was short, so a guitar solo was added at the start of the song. The vocals and the guitar solo (the latter played by Phil Gardner - or Philip18 as he's known on MacJams) are one-take tracks.

The track is taken from the vinyl, so you'll hear some noise. This is being posted by both Phil and me, and the cover displayed is from a copy of the LP that Phil has - with Arlo's and my signatures.

The musicians are:
Words and music: Franciscus Henri
Vocals: Franciscus Henri
Guitars: Phil Gardner, Franciscus Henri
Drums: Geoff Cox
Bass: Rick Berger
Piano: Brian Cadd
Produced by Brian Cadd

Recorded at Armstrong Studios by Graeme Owens

Lyrics
Friendship like bread
Once broken yet
I've broken mine
Friendship like wine
I've poured out mine
Peter and Sal
Sal was my gal
I know where they went
And I know why they had to go
All I can say
The USA
Seems a lifetime away

Lovely, analogue sound! Fine opening groove with Philip's guitar work and the bass as highlights. Your vocal work is compelling, Franc. A fine song vignette that builds beautifully. Thanks for sharing it with us. Regards, Peter.

Love the sound.
Bass and guitar in counterpoint all the way through. Really nice, really simple, a really effective. The intro was a bit long, but it totally made sense after you got into the vocal, which, by the way, is beautifully performed. Hummm...I wish there were more lyrics, a longer story, esp. after the long prelude. Nevertheless, the groovy beat and solid band kept my interest from the very first notes. The recording sounds pro all the way.

A fine fine song
I love everything about this one Franciscus, especially your vocal and Phil's guitar except I would have loved to hear another chorus or two. There is so much more here to mine. I understand at this point you can't get the band back together to lengthen it, but I can always dream. This is really good. Thanks for dusting it off and posting it!

What a tasty track. love the mix of the old vinyl and newer lead track. Man, the vocals are killer. Takes me back to my 13th year (1972) the reverb on the vocal sounds so retro. Really gets rocking at the end, and it ends way too soon. Thanks for this gem.

Wow!
I guess you said it all, but I was gearing up for more. Love the build up. It provides a lot of momentum to the lyric, which is well performed and stark and yet full of emotion and soul baring. Nice job with this!
