Friendship (with Franciscus Henri)

Description
This song has been taken from a 1972 Franciscus Henri LP called Gabriel's Mother's Highway (the title track was written by Arlo Guthrie).

Both Franciscus and I have posted it, so if you've commented on his page there's no need to comment here - the song is the same.

"Friendship" was the final song on the LP. It was short, so a guitar solo was added at the start of the song. I fiddled around a bit, then Franciscus asked for the solo to keep to the lower strings. The track is the first take, played on the Maton FG 100 steel strung acoustic guitar that I still use today.

The track is taken from the vinyl, so you'll hear some noise. This is being posted by both Franc and me, and the cover displayed is from a copy of an LP that Arlo and Franc signed. We are still playing music together today, so I guess "Friendship" is an apt title for a collaboration.

Lyrics
Friendship like bread
Once broken yet
I've broken mine
Friendship like wine
I've poured out mine
Peter and Sal
Sal was my gal
I know where they went
And I know why they had to go
All I can say
The USA
Seems a lifetime away

Impressive
One take, Mr Gardner! Pretty impressive. Fine groove. It is great to hear this and also great to know that you two, and the Maton, are still producing quality music and are still friends 40 years later. Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

One take
Yes, if I were doing it today I'd have GB on loop and do 20 takes! That Maton has done a lot of work, and I'm hoping it will keep it happening! See you soon.

Love the vinyl warmth. Sure does echo of the period it was created in. Excellent vocal.

Thanks
The mixes were warm - we get clarity today, but that warmth is hard to replicate, I think. I've always found Franc's vocals have both power and warmth. Thanks again for your support, Andrew - it is much appreciated!

Mixed by Brian Cadd!
Respect!
Lovely sound on the FG 100 - I still have my FG150 12 string from the same period.
Vey nice - thanks!

The mix
At the time I think the connection was Armstrong Studios and Fable Records - both Franciscus and Brian Cadd had recorded for Fable. He was already big then, so having him as the producer was a real buzz. Don't sell that FG 150 - wonderful sound!

My memory is that Peter and Sal were friends of Franc and they shifted from Australia to the USA, hence the song. Thanks for listening and for the comment - much appreciated!

Echos of the times - Although this was a little before my real music consciousness took over, I feel that familiar feeling when listening to this. I really enjoyed that era of music, thanks for posting.

Friendship (with Franciscus Henri)
As soon as I heard the opening hiss I new it would sound good ... like everyone has said ... warm. There is nothing like analogue ... love the warm bass sound and that wonderful lead tone. Henri's vocals sound great. More please!

Warm sound
I thought I might be able to bet rid of that hiss, but no luck - probably need better software than I have! But yes, it does tell you what to expect. We were all impressed by the arrival of the no noise CD, but it seems that some warmth went too - another case of you don't know what you've got till it's gone! Thanks for stopping by, Stan.

Friendship...
...firstly, this is an excellent example of the "sounds" of the 70s and the vinyl artifacts, without being obtrusive, add much to that dimension. Very sold work gents and the guitar work on this is wonderful! The beats have a nice crisp sound to them and contribute very nicely too. Thanks for sharing this little trip down memory lane; I really enjoyed this! Michael

Nicely done,
Like the extended intro fiddlling, low strings and all...sets it apart from the expected fretboard crawlings and fits well with this fine, chill piece. Takes me back to a time when THIS is the kind of music we all dug. (Yeah, guess I'm old.) You piqued my interest with the Maton 100...watch-listened to some vid of it...nice, round sound not too unlike my D-28.

Like the fade in
and continues with a nice texture with the lead and the counter guitar. Very swayin and cool festive sound. It all works like clock work in a nice soft rockin way !
Nice singing ! Like the sixties feel to this. I enjoy how you capture that feeling of the way it was and the way it could be even today !
