The Old Man

Description
It's nearly 4 months since I posted a song.....

I think I've developed a phobia about finishing songs so I'd like to thank Bud, Steve Craig (echoroom) and Anne Cozean (Sisters) and Terry (Davisamerica2) for their invaluable advice, encouragement and support.

So all things being equal here is the latest song with all its quirks and faults. The lyrics have been knocking around for a while but I got an idea for a melody on holiday. When I came home I bought a stupidly cheap new resonator for £260 and sat down with a vague idea of an arrangement for the new song. The vocals and guitar were done in one hit with some very obvious hesitations (the guitar was close miced and I used the piezo pickup as well). Then I added some bass and a cajon. The timing is not spot on but without a click track I was amazed it kept together at all. I tried to redo the whole thing as it was all a bit rough but it got worse every time so I'm going with the first attempt that at least has some life

It's part of the Queen Caroline cycle and it's the old man who's been there for years and doesn't want to leave. You have to suspend belief that a 90 year old can sing like that....

A little bit of Americana from the deep south of England ;-)

Sometimes the nights seem endless
and morning is an eternity away
The fires in my brain die slowly
as I wait to start another day

I moved here as a young man
It was clean and new and safe
And I know it's changed now
but I still love this place

Chorus
I hear rumours, I hear scandal,
I hear truth and I hear lies
but it's nothing I can't handle
it's the council I despise

I've fought the Nazis at Milano
I was there when Berlin fell
And I hope that in the next life
I'll see this lot go to hell

I have to live with memories
that would drive those bastards mad
They talk about the greater good
more like the greater bad

And that's my Dad on his 84th birthday last week.

Hey there, Methuselah!
Nice and sweaty, great match between lyrics and music. Nicely sung for a 90 year-old. Voice is still in top shape, I'd say. Dig the foot-stompin' bass, and the resonator sounds great.

Yippee aye oh
Thanks Julian!

It's not Brighton Council but Hammersmith and Fulham who want to sell the council estate to developers and move all the residents out to some undisclosed location.

I used to fancy Julie Birchill once .... .

Are you making it to London for the 22nd ?

The Old Man
It has an authentic deep south Dorset vibe, Dick :-) Fine work on the resonator guitar and vocals. Click tracks are for wimps... The chorus has a great hook and the arrangement builds nicely. Glad you broke free of the phobia. Good one. Thanks, Peter.

Damn
Dick, this is excellent. It sounds like a missing White Stripes track. I know what it's like to want to re-record stuff to perfect it, but I think your instinct to go with the looser version is completely dead on. It's full of life and I can't hear a thing wrong with it. Man, I love this. I think it would be fun to hear you do another version of this with a bigger arrangement that kicks in after "but I still love this place," with drums, electric guitar bass and everything. It's an old trick, but I think it would really be cool on this song.
DWL said 1290 days ago (October 14th, 2013)
Thanks Lisa!
Strangely enough I did try a "bigger" version but I just couldn't make it sound right (as I said I was seizing up when I started to record). As this was thrown together really quickly and was never intended for public consumption I think I was a lot more relaxed.

I really appreciate the listen and comments :-)

Cheers

Dick

Really like the guitar sound in this with that droning open tuning and I love when the deep bass and slide roll in. Great vocals and I think a click track would have taken the natural feel this has away.... great job!

Neo-Traditionalist
Spot on! Love this one. The first take shine is audible. Often the form you've chosen here is identified with Columbia Music marketing techniques that date from the 1930s. The voice of dissent presented here is authentic, and connected to the American tradition as created by Columbia. Imho the vein from the older Irish and English traditions is where your at here... the resonator of course is not from the older stuff, but it sounds righteous on the tune... Well done!

Thanks Mr D!
That's an interesting bit of background that I wasn't aware of. I always assumed this sort of music organically grew. I didn't realise there was any marketing behind it. Times don't change do they?

The resonator rather determined the sound and feel of this. It might be fairly cheap but it's great to play and seems to write itself.

Many thanks for the listen, comments and the education :-)

I had someone else say "Brother Where art thou?". I never really thought about it but I guess it is in that vein. As I said in an earlier reply, I think the guitar drove this song and I had very little to do with it (which is probably the best thing ;-) )

Love that southern sound ;)
The resonator sounds brilliant Dick, and the overall sound and performance is top shelf. In some ways, I think it sounds better than your fuller sounding tracks. I'm a great believer in early tracks being best, and this shows how good they can sound. I'm reminded a little of the Muswell Hillbillies by this.
Excellent post!
Congratulations on breaking the drought.

As I said to Bob
The guitar's the star here!

Thanks for the comments Neil. I am wondering if I should try to simplify some of my songs. Not only might I finish some of them but there is a certain charm to something simple rather the multi-layered productions I seem to get hooked into (not that I'll stop those of course!)

Muswell Hillbillies? I'd forgotten all about that album and just had a look on Youtube. Yes, you may be right!

Thanks again Neil :-)

I had to listen twice just so I could believe it. This track blends two styles that really shouldn't work together yet here they do. How ya made this work I don't know, but it's a work of genius, superb, super-cool and highly unusual all at the same time. Well done all involved!

I am gob-smacked that this has received such positive reviews when I wasn't convinced about it initially. The lyrics weren't finished (there are some clumsy rhymes and concepts), the melody wasn't fixed in my head and there was no arrangement.

Perhaps I should adopt tis appraoch again ;-)
