Description
Picture an elevator from your home planet up to the circular space station way, way out of the increasingly hostile atmosphere at ground level. It's amazing what speed they achieve nowadays! In just 1.23 minutes you're there, but to make the transit a bit easier for your mind you get this little piece of elevator music in your ears.

Inspired by our recent trip to London and all the Way out-signs in the Tube, but also western Europe's tallest building The Shard (which we only saw in the distance, I'm afraid) with its 310 meters.

So far so good, but actually this is just a short tune to test some of the new features in the latest edition of Garageband. So it features a doubled track with the arpeggiator in action and for one track I hired a drummer called Gavin with his Scientific Method drum kit. I also tried a couple of the new instruments that I found nice.

Those are the good parts. But there are others that I do not like in the new version. It is much harder to tweak things the way you want, even if there are some possibilities still if only you can find, and understand, them. Seems to be a bit buggy as well. And you really need a trackpad to get around in your (longer) projects :-/

Thank you for traveling with Way Out Elevators! Hope you enjoy the ride - and the view from the top level!

Actually I wish so too, but time is limited and I should concentrate on my next "season" project...

Next Floor Hardware, Haberdashery and Space Suits
Certainly not like any Bossa Nova styled elevator music this tune helps transport us up and up and way out. It is bright and positive and gives one a spring in one's step as we exit the elevator. Spacey and evocative!

Sorry to hear about the GB woes - hopefully it gets better as you become more familiar.
Henke said 1358 days ago (November 3rd, 2013)
Hehe
Thanks for hearing all that in this little piece. I forgot to mention another inspiration from London, i.e. the musical we saw/listened to while there: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with its glass elevator.

No worries about GB, I'll manage, I just want to warn those who rely on an older version to think twice before "upgrading". Maybe keep an older version on another Mac, if that is an option. Also, this might be the thing that tip me over to Logic at last. Maybe Logic X is the thing for me in the future...

Thanks for listening in so quickly :-)

Thanks Kevin
Glad you liked it, the story came to me as I was typing :-) Not 100% happy with the musical side, but it can't be hit every time ;-)

Take care,
Henke

I'm with Harald...
much longer, please: then it would be a REAL trip. What IS a real trip is the mini GB review, on top of your SRC entry. So, it may be (too) short, but your sounds and textures are quite tasty, the percussive vibraphone (?) especially.

Henke said 1358 days ago (November 3rd, 2013)
Thanks Richard
Actually, I agree, but I don't have a lot of time so it had to be this short for now. I like the percussive vibraphone as well. It's the new GB Arpeggiator virtual instrument "Quantizer Patterns" played rather randomly by me on my midi keyboard, doubled and spread to the back left and right. BTW, that is NOT possible to do with a drummer track. I thought drummers usually sat in the back of the stage, and I like to simulate that by this doubling method - but no more. Otherwise it's a godsend for a hopeless "drummer" like myself :-)

My real problem here is the solo track. I am not sure the timing is spot on, even though I tried to fix it for several hours before posting :-/ Maybe it would have been best to just drop it and let the arpeggiator do its magic, not sure... (The problem's probably due to the 5/4 meter which apparently I can't harness...)

Anyway, thanks for the listen and comment. Take care,
Henke

Thank you
It might be worth extending to make justice to the Quantizer Patterns and maybe finding a better way to use the melody (for example in another song ;-)

I like the way Gavin's groove works with that bubbling synth bass.

Thanks
If I can overcome the other issues with the new GB version the drummer track will help me a lot in future songs. I think and hope there are quite a lot of variation to find there as well.

Thanks again and take care,
Henke

Space elevator
Maybe one of these days. Yep, you're probably right. There will be music. And ads. And shopping at the space mall. Ah, capitalism. Anyway, nice teaser. And Gavin knows his stuff. But not the way you do,

Hehe, well, thanks
Actually, today I read in my daughter's student magazine for the technology university in town about future ways to travel fast, and space elevators were among them. They argued, however, that the atmosphere could become a bit tense if the people in the cramped area didn't come along very well for the several hours(sic!) journey. But some music might help of course. Also they said that the elevator would sit on a wire and be kept up centrifugally. Hm, well, maybe...

Anyway, thanks and take care,
Henke

Nice piece
Like the arpeggiated backdrop and the melody line. Saw a great music video on PBS that used similar arp backing for the music. really like that sound.

Glad you liked these parts. I do too, but perhaps not quite the way they are mixed together here. Need some more work I think. Maybe if I get the time some day :-/

Nice, trippy. Reminds me of an old computer game that I've tried to find the music from for a long time. I'd like to sum this up with two words: evocative snippet. Maybe you could call your next short piece that? ;)

Actually
I had an earlier comment to one of my songs in mind when I sat down to make this. Well, I soon had to abandon that idea... Evocative Snippet, you say, well why not? On the other hand I should really get back to writing a bit longer pieces with some development in them. We'll see what's in store...

Thanks for listening and commenting!

Interesting synths. The vibraphone sound sets a nice beat. Enjoyed.

Glad you enjoyed it. I like the new synths in GB - but I miss the old easy way to tweak them further to your needs. Well well, maybe I'll learn how to use the new interface one day...

I've listened to this a couple times now, and I totally get the elevator concept. Uplifting, exciting, and a little spacey: a great combination. Thanks for posting.

Elevator Ride
I enjoyed this on my elevator ride. Digging the drummer Gavin. The horn instrument was pretty swell also. I haven't touched GB in a long time but might have to look into Logic X... :) Enjoyed this but like others wish it were a bit longer.

Can't blame Gavin that I don't like this a 100% ;-) It would probably help to extend it a bit, to let each part get its share of the time so to speak. I am starting to be interested in Logic X as well...

Thanks for the listen and for commenting!

Woosh!
We're there. I'm liking the marimba/vibes sound. Is that a new GB instrument? Music for space elevators. Great idea! Is there a different tune for the descent I wonder?

Short but sweet Henke. Nice one.

Henke said 1352 days ago (November 9th, 2013)
Hehe
Yeah, maybe a bit unrealistic - I should probably double the length ;-) And yes, I think it is a new instrument, using the new arpeggiator, which is another thing I will probably use more in future songs...

Please, don't speak of the descent, I feel nauseous already ;-) (I would never even consider going on a Free Fall "attraction" in an amusement park...)

Not my best, but glad you could enjoy the ride anyway.

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Lively and too short.
Yep, leaves us wanting more, or at least left me wanting more. Nicely chosen sounds, and some great details in there. Parts of the melody made me think of bagpipes, so that was new for GarageBand.
