Description
A young dreamer lays down in a summer field and looks up at the shimmering vacuum above him. As he drifts off he is drawn through the various science fiction worlds he has loved as they all meld and blend in his dreamscape. Is he a starship captain, a Jedi warrior, or a fighter pilot on a battlestar? He finds himself drawn to a strange world with an ancient tribal race, where his journey takes its climax.

This piece has orchestral and organic sounds mixed with undertones of digital magic and arpeggiated rhythm.

Both beauty and power
This is quite terrific Stephen: I wouldn't mind at all if you extended this. The juxtaposition of the two halves, a truly lovely front followed by an exciting race to the close, make a strong contrast but you blended them almost seamlessly. Great stuff!

Richard,
I know. I played around a little with a longer version and to be honest I would have needed to much more time. I think I learned by doing this. I will script my movements to the story and make sure I can transition well on the next project. Live and learn. Thank you.

I like doing the orchestral stuff,
I have a real challenge when it comes to the synth elements. I will have to try a pure synth piece one of these days. Thanks.

great opening horns, and the lush strings evoke space well. the drums and voices sound like there's a battle brewing - cool

Nice interpretation
Of the challenge and well executed. Nice "organic" second part of the tune. The first part could probably be made longer, for example with a few different themes covering the fictional worlds he is dreaming about.

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Kevin,
Many of my Macjams buddies have pointed this out on a lot of my work. I think its a function of being a slave to the initial musical idea. I often have no idea where to carry a piece after that. That is why I said to Henke that I think I need a more expansive musical vocabulary.

The opening is just ... simply ... fantastic. Evocative is putting it mildly. The second half reminds me of something more martial, but mixed with an underlying and contrasting emotion. Really fine piece. It ended just as it was gearing up. But I understand the deal with time constraints. Maybe worth expanding? Yeah!

Ha!
Your comments are inline with others here. I think if I ever do a piece that goes longer than 3 minutes I should immediately be awarded an honorary degree in music. I just need to do some growing and learn how to develop more complex works. Thanks.

Got me in the opening
I love how you use a synth for the fanfare and the progression through the string entry is great. A nice blend of orchestral and synths throughout with an effective rising tension in the second part. I understand about time being an issue (do I!!) but maybe someday you can revisit this piece and develop it further. I like this a lot.

Doug,
Thank you so much. The opening horns are actual horn samples, but as I listen now it is the way I played them that gives the synth feel. Really it is just bad horn playing (guitar player playing horns on keyboard, sheesh!). I appreciate your taking the time for a good listen and the encouragement.

Wonderful cinematic horn opening, great dynamics on the strings. Love it! I'd like to hear the second half without drums. Nothing wrong with them btw, I'd just love to hear all those wonderful pads without the distraction of a beat. Nice work.

Thanks for your comments. I did toy with the idea of a slower build with no drums till much later, but I am not much for ambient stuff so I got impatient and just went right through it.

I like the narrative...
...and the way you transition from one section to the next. I DO get the sense that the "vision" is somewhat "out there," and that may have been the main reason for what I perceive as a slightly muffled recording. I'm not sure I even have a preference, but was just wondering if that was your intention or if you had really wanted something sharper in sound. ... I agree with Richard's comment about a longer number. Seems like when you made the big transition, the number was just about over without time to let THOSE dreams play out. I hear ya, however: once having learned, it's sometimes better to just move on with something new rather than fiddle with the old. ... This sure is a nice track.

sschedra said 1291 days ago (November 8th, 2013)
Paul,
Absolutely. I tried several times to get more thematic transitions, but in the end I just left it the way it was. Challenges have deadlines. Even though I had more time, I just didn't have the luxury of putting it aways and going back in fresh. That often gives me new ideas. So when I couldn't seem to break the log jam, I just cut it the way it was. My own impatience plays in to this dynamic.

And thank you for the comments too. Consensus seems to be longer would have been better. I think I am afraid to let anything sit too long in front of a sophisticated audience and that has always had me doing short and sweet.

Orchestral
It's always great to have variety across the Challenge. This piece has the stirring introduction, mankind on the verge of exploring the great unknown, undaunted and ready for adventure. You take it from there on a journey of courage and wonder. Let us know if you develop this further into a longer piece.

I will consider all the suggestions here, and as always I have learned from everyone. This is a good challenge as I think the idea of space opens the imagination to almost anything.

That was one of my favorite parts as well. I used easy drummer to write the parts, but mapped them onto the Low Resonant Darabuka drums from Sample Tank. I finished them off with Logic's Space Designer Reverb using the pre-set "Alternate Swells".
