CAPTAIN MIZUKI (SRC2013)

Description
This is a postscript to my entry 2 years back called OUTERWORLDS. http://www.macjams.com/song/70683

Over 200 years have passed since mankind has abandoned earth, found and settled on a new world. Though science and advanced technology has enable them to survive and thrive on NEW EARTH, customs and culture have turned inward and have forbidden space travel and exploration.

But a restless and self commissioned Captain Mujaki has different ideas.
Here is a partial portrait of his journey.

I'm reposting this song again. Somehow my original post got corrupted and wouldn't post comments. I knew something was wrong when I found over 60 plays and multi downloads within minutes of posting the song. Hopefully this post will be OK.

I want to thank all those that listened and those that fanned and perhaps wanted to comment and couldn't. As we all do I look forward to reading your comments and if you couldn't but care to again I'd love to read anything you have to say about this offering.
Thanks Guys,
Charlie

CAPTAIN MIZUKI
I was on the brink of messaging you yesterday about the recording quality of your last upload. Now you have luckily corrected the corrupted file and it sounds really better. Except in the middle part the music is clipping and frustrates the listen. Otherwise you did again an excellent work in your proper style.

I appreciate you following up Harald.
Yesterday's file had problems. I was concerned mostly with the inability to post comments here but you're right there were also mixing problems that I tried to correct with this post.

The middle part you refer to of course is the area where definite clipping occurs. I toned it down somewhat but decided to keep a little just to reinforce the sense of things breaking up and going wrong but perhaps it would be best to not have any at all if it's too distracting.

Thanks my friend,
Charlie

I do think
that orchestral works are the hardest to produce and balance etc., but Charles you always manage it so well…..a very descriptive piece, cheers M

Love the opening brass
and the stirring percussion just before halfway. I don't think I've ever seen a Japanese sci-fi movie so I'm unfamiliar with what is usually heard in them, but I have to say that the last half of this sounds a little Aaron Copland-ish, which may or may not be a compliment ;-)

I haven't
seen too many Japanese SciFi myself but I'm sure they're pretty wild and I'm always happy to have my name mentioned in the same sentence with Aaron Copland.
Thanks Richard,

any day a new Bowman track is released is an excellent day. Downloaded (of course) ..... The only thing that frustrates me about all your work is ... I could never figure out how to accomplish such work. Good stuff Charlie.

an interesting listen
i really like the theme you set up around 3:45 and develop from there on. very nice

the orchestra panning sounds just right: strings on the left, cellos and basses on the right. enhances its realism.

i agree with Narad that the clipping around 2:15 to 2:30 is distracting

thanks

The
clipping seems to distract some. Like I mentioned to Harald I'll have to reconsider that portion of the piece. Glad you liked the last section which is strong departure from what preceded it.
I wasn't sure but heck it felt right so I went with it.
Thanks Bill,
Charlie

Impressive
Orchestration of the Captain's journey, with great dynamics (well, yes, even a bit too much at one time ;-) and creative "spacey" use of the good ol' classical instruments. Well done, Charles.

Thanks and take care,
Henke

From Dynamic to Delicate
Very well handled. As mentioned there is clipping at 2:23 mark. Interplay of strings and horns very well orchestrated. Sensed moods of suspense followed by a graceful respite. this gives way to a brief moment of wonderment followed by a building tension. Nice mix of ideas that transition well.

Really nicely done
I don't have the patience [or talent] to orchestrate a piece like this. I like the last section best of all. Gaiety, with a hint of dissonance. Very nice.

Love the rich orchestral sounds and the development of the work. The timpani are always good - they get the action going! Your music tells a story, Charlie.

Your pieces always sound so complete. Great melodic ideas supported by lush orchestration. Great build. Really enjoyed the movement starting around 3:35. It seemed to lead to a darker place punctuated by that awesome low brass.

A lovely cinematic piece, and it fits very well with your story line: one man, risking it all, breaking all the rules, all for a journey into the unknown. Great melody throughout, thanks for posting.

Fanned x2
Strange things happening with the audio files here lately?

Anyway this is an interesting piece as it seems to take a look inside Mizuki. While the topic is his travels I get a sense that this is how he reacts internally to the new places he visits and the life forms he encounters. Your setting is intimate and almost introspective. I hear struggle and tension, release with almost a pastoral feel, doubt and strong resolve, your use of different sections each with a different ostinato in the strings made for more places to explore. There is almost a call and answer as snippets of the,SE pass around the orchestra. I think you've got the ending right here too. Nice variation on tonality.

Cheers Charlie,
Doug

Strange indeed.
Yours is a fascinating take on this Doug that really hits home with me.

Everything we experience is internalized - even if it's millions of miles from home and does anything really exist without an observer? Ok I'm coming back down to earth now.

Thanks for returning to this problem child of mine. I'm happy it's not an orphan.

and the tension builds...
as you continue to branch out from strings to brass and woodwinds, very nicely done. I'll echo Bill's comment that I enjoyed the build to the interestingly syncopated dancey thing near the end.

I don't remember...
...the original post or if I commented on it...But I must say (even though I am three months late) that this version is really spectacular, Charlie. You and making such amazing headway in your orchestral thinking and this track displays not only your growing expertise as an arranger/composer, but also your ability to spin a narrative through music. It is such a pleasure to hear this kind of music here and to know that there as composers who value the subtle things that make a "classical" orchestration work so well in communicating ideas. Very very nice, indeed. (Sorry I am so late in getting here.)
