Description
this is for the Macjams Space Race Challenge - 2013
http://www.macjams.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=22;showtopic=270540

in this one, i am a microphone. in 2023 a space probe has been dispatched to Europa. it lands on the glass smooth surface and, using a laser, it drills a hole through about a mile and a half of ice. then it lowers a microphone into the hole and relays the sounds back to Earth.

Europa is the sixth-closest moon of the planet Jupiter, and the smallest of its four Galilean satellites, but still the sixth-largest moon in the Solar System.
Slightly smaller than the Moon, Europa is primarily made of silicate rock and probably has an iron core. It has a tenuous atmosphere composed primarily of oxygen. Its surface is composed of water ice and is one of the smoothest in the Solar System. This surface is striated by cracks and streaks, whereas craters are relatively rare. The apparent youth and smoothness of the surface have led to the hypothesis that a water ocean exists beneath it, which could conceivably serve as an abode for extraterrestrial life. This hypothesis proposes that heat from tidal flexing causes the ocean to remain liquid and drives geological activity similar to plate tectonics.

started in GarageBand to create 12 seconds of sound:
used 2-Step Balancing Beat 01, 2-Step Machine Beat 01, Breaks Biggie Beat 02, DnB Tight Beat, Comedy Noises (boing, slide whistle w/ cowbell, mooing cows)
added humongous AU Matrix Reverb
exported into Paul Stretch
stretched it out to 1:33
exported into Audacity
duplicated the track several times, pitch shifted down by 7, 12 and 24
compressed the original track
exported back to GarageBand
added Track Volume automation to gain-ride the reverb tail

How on earth did you come up with what you did? Sounds like there might be some whale-like creatures down there! Good soundscape, however you did it!

I think Europa is the must intriguing place in the solar system. Great idea for the challenge. Your description of the creative process was almost as interesting as the sonic results.

From 12 seconds of beats and cows
to a minute-and-a-half of sub-surface Europan eavesdropping. Only you, Bill. This is a treat, for sure. Cheers.

Europa
I'm a science TV junkie and enjoy watching shows about space, the planets, and the possibility of life on other planets (or a planet's moon, like Europa). You've created a nice soundscape to go along with your description of what might lie beneath Europa's surface.

soundscape was the perfect word. just listening pulls out all sorts of visuals, no video needed--just a mind screen.

Cool stuff
I like that creative thinking. And then you could use this as a "loop" in a longer project. Real nice, thanks!

Take care,
Henke

P.S. I agree with Kenta, this challenge really kindles our creativity anew, thanks again to Mission Control :-)

European paean
Life on in under Europa. Maybe. It would be the discovery of the century, in whichever century it might occur. Thanks for the description of the process, and the write-up. A fascinating place, and a fascinating soundtrack to go with it.

Europa
I thought of Europa as a concept for the SRC as well, but changed it to what it is. Loved this idea and execution of recording the oceans of Europa. It is the most logical place to look for life in our solar system to be sure, and when the sun begins to swell, all that ice will begin to melt. Imagine that scene! Thanks for posting.

Sounds from the frozen deep
I love your setting Bill as it gives every nuance in your track extra meaning. This very evocative and completely immersive - I'm down there with the microphone and I'll have to admit it is fascinating but more than a little uncomfortable. Great sound design - I would never have guessed that any of the sounds you list are in the piece.

Time to dry off and get warm....
