Description
My first ever challenge entry.

I'll admit I am not entirely happy with it yet, but I just don't have the time I'd like to devote to it right now. I may upload a better version next weekend, but this has to be in now for the challenge deadline. I don't think it's bad, but I know I can further improve it given a little time. I love the way NASA make most of their sound files public domain along with their images and video, it made the opening to this much more authentic than it would have been if I'd got a bunch of friends together to try and record my own countdown etc. The lovely Korg M1 LE soft synth and some carefully tweaked GarageBand synths made this fun to work on. Great toys those synths if you are willing to spend time tweaking them to improve the sounds they make.

Oh and it's not just the countdown, the weird spacy noises are a NASA recording of the radio emissions of Saturn, as processed by NASA to bring the sounds into the range of human hearing. All I did was import and add reverb.

Lovely composition. Warm synth tones. The authentic NASA sounds were a very nice touch.

Thanks.
Yeah, having those NASA samples helped a lot, they brought back the excitement of hearing the countdowns live and I tried to reflect that in my piece. Thanks for lending your ears!

kits if realism in this gem. you did a great job tweaking the GB synths - it's like a big musical playbox isn't it? always enjoy your work F.A. - thanks for the D/L!

Yes
A literal start developing into some really nice warm synth sounds. Indeed, well worth developing, as you say. The reverb on the samples is perfect! Nice composition.

Yep, stuck to the theme.
I recall the time when Apollo went to the moon and I heard most of the countdowns live, so I was trying to develop something that would reflect the mood back then.

Yeah those synths are great.
The Korg M1 is a real killer with tons of genuinely useful presets, and even the GB synths are actually pretty good even if the presets are a bit weak - tweak them! The warmth was what I was aiming for along with some optimism to reflect the mood created by the Apollo programme.

Good start
With a proper NASA countdown, what could go wrong ;-) Some very nice synth work in here. Since you say you may keep working on it, I started to think that maybe a bit more on the lower end wouldn't hurt? Either way it's already a sweet listen and a good first challenge entry - I haven't done many either, but it's a very good way of letting your creativity flow (often by being set some limitations that you need to work yourself around ;-)

According to my space log this is actually the no 100 entry to any of the three Space Race Challenges on MJ. Snare drum and trumpet fanfare!!

Thanks for joining and take care,
Henke

It would be hard to reproduce those original NASA mission control guys. They have their own way of talking, This is a bubbly, frothy tribute to those early days, and it's an enjoyable listen. I didn't expect that beating heart. A little extra drama inserted into the proceedings. Nice.

Thanks!
Yeah, the heartbeat over the later part of the countdown helped; I recall those countdowns live, they were part of my life as a kid and a huge inspiration. Thanks for listening.

This has a warm, human feel to it. I can hear the same optimism in your piece as are in those old NASA recordings. The heartbeat is a nice touch too. Thanks for posting.

The mood is upbeat...
...and that was intentional. NASA thought they could do anything and the mood was infectious, it raised morale in the USA and indeed in the world. They did it so well for so long we forgot that space travel is still risky until the shuttle accidents reminded us. Thanks for really listening!

DWL said 1286 days ago (November 13th, 2013)
Well tweaked!
An 80s feel to the synths which really suits the piece.

I'm sure it could be improved but I'm not sure how as this works perfectly as it is.

Cheers

Dick

It definitely will get better.
The first parts of the melody when it starts up I can do a lot better, and I am pretty sure I can improve the ending too. We'll see, I hope to have time to work on this some more at the weekend. Thanks for the encouragement, all the comments help me to believe it's worth working on it.

The NASA archive took me back too.
I watched all the Apollo landings live and most of the launches too, starting with Apollo 11. It was a great mood lifter to most of the world and I hope they head for Mars sometime soon to give us more inspiration. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad it took you back too.

Moogish
Spacey intro to set the mood then it sounds like you are channeling a little Wendy Carlos. Vintage synth sounds work well with the fx from back when there was a space program. Cool.
