Pushing Buttons with Anne Cozean

Description
The image is a photo I took at a local department store of the board game called Sorry.

I decided to try acoustic this time. For some reason the Fishman pickups were especially noisy. I think things would be much better if I had a couple of decent microphones and a quiet room. As usual I'm not real happy with my vocals so I tried to pan them off on Anne Cozean. Anne said the song was a bit low for her range, results of my tuning the guitar flat to curtail to my voice. She wouldn't hear nothing of changing the existing vocals except for some areas that needed work. Anne did a fantastic job on the backup which really enhance the overall quality of the song. This one took some time due to schedules and such but I'm real happy, it was worth the wait. "Sometime good things come to those who wait."

Most of you know Anne Cozean here on macjams. If you don't take the time and check out SISTERS http://www.macjams.com/artist/sisters and you will understand why I wanted to collaborate. Thanks Anne for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help this composition shine.

The song is about harsh words that can be said and how sometimes words that come out in the heat of a moment slip through without real meaning. Soon the wife and I will be celebrating our 29th anniversary and that to me is poof a good relation can overcome.

I also thought about making a list of all the other people who I've wronged through the years, either at the time I was being careless or just didn't realize that the outcome would end the way it did and write them all here on this post. I ran some occasions through my mind and the list just kept getting longer. I'm sure a lot of this is in my nature, being one to carry a guilt around. Most people move on and cope with situations, "like water off a ducks tail". My loving parents were very forgiving and they past that kind of attitude on to me, I know I put them through a lot. If only I could carry a magic eraser around or in reality think before I react.

Lyrics
But now it's late that time is done
You're not around you've come and gone
You seemed upset I failed to note
Oh how I wish I hadn't spoke

And now it's done I can't repeal
Denying words that have a seal
I set it up can't break it down
Still in my heart it wasn't real

Sorry It's not like me
Sorry I was being mean
Sorry I'm not your enemy
And I'm sorry I should have seen

So let me clear those words away
The kind of words you never say
A mess a charge that came about
The anger failed without a doubt

I hope somehow you will reprieve
I never meant for you to leave
Poor uttered words and recklessness
And all it brought was emptiness

Sorry It's not like me
Sorry I was being mean
Sorry I'm not your enemy
And I'm sorry I should have seen

I hope somehow we can amend
Feelings that hurt are now to win
Those words were hard for one to bear
I didn't mean them it's not fair

I know that love will overcome
A string of words can come undone
So let me spell them differently
To show how much you mean to me

Sorry It's not like me
Sorry I was being mean
I'm sorry now...

Nice tune. Interesting and unexpected changes in the chorus. I like the acoustic tone. There's a nice jangle to it. Your vocal works very well. Authentic and hits the right feel dynamically. The message of regret comes through in the performance. Anne always puts a smooth shine on a track taking it to the next level.

Yeah
The composition is a bit awkward and I know what you mean about the chorus, it does get a little dark, pushing this to the unusual. Thanks for the kind comments and listening.

had
some tricky harmony parts in there that Anne pulled off perfectly (surprise!). never expected this team up, but it worked really well. as Andrew noted, the unexpected chord changes brought out that extra lift.

John, I really love the guitar work in this one; really pro, tonally, technically and structure wise. Anne is always a "sure thing" when asked to harmonize, so pro and so fun to work with! The song is well written and I think we all can relate to the subject matter. Bass and drums worked well together (sorry, I wish I could've contributed). My only slight nit was that the verses were a bit repetitive in vocal delivery. IMO, you have your own vocal style and it works well, so I would just say, be confident and vary your inflection or emphasis on different words...it peaks the interest. Chorus was nice, and again, your guitar playing really shined on this. Great job!

when I started out
I had a lot of different progressions, I was stuck on how it was going to be arranged. I started fiddling around with some lyrics and got caught up in a play on words and message. I fit the chord structure to the lyrics. Long winded and like you said repetitious, probably would have taken some effort to re- arrange the structure and melody. The chorus was kind of odd, stuck on a note where the structure wasn't initially intended and then proceeding down a dark chord arrangement to my ears and into the C/E, D/F# (if I was in regular tuning). The end was a jazz progression I was playing around with, why not throw that in there... it's macjams anyway.

I haven't done very many collabs until lately... I was passing stuff around to get input as well as help and get something posted without receiving valuable information afterwards but then maybe I should have stated.

Thanks for dropping by.

A warm acoustic sound with a nice balance and a superb hook, great collab. Anne's voice adds another colour to it all. About perfect I would say.

There is a great acoustic groove running through this, John. Your vocals work well in this context and you showed great judgement getting Anne involved. Damn, there are some tricky harmonies in the chorus. The guitars sound fine. I really enjoyed the listen. Thanks to you both, Peter.

I was getting a lot of noise when I quit playing the guitar, a noise gate wasn't taking care of the issue and it could have been the preset in logic. I had to end the final note abruptly. You're spot on about Anne, she's a talent. Thanks for the comments, means a lot.

Great tune
Lists like this only weighs ya down... even though an unexamined life is equally burdensome. But you dont need me to say this sort of thing as you are as wise a man as anyone I know. Anne's vocals meld in so nicely on this tune. I think you guys are on to soomething. Sorry is one of my favorite board games, btw.

I'm *Taken* By The Warmth...
... of this tune, John. ;)

Very, very nice track. Mellow stuff with some very tasteful guitar work and sweet harmony work by Anne.

I do think the ending is too abrupt and I would have probably ended it with a big, drawn-out *Sorry* choir harmony, but that's just my subjective producer self. ;)

Enjoyed!
As always, very exceptional guitar work from you John, good vocals (Anne of course has the harmonization down pat) and what I enjoyed about this song musically was it's low-key style, which allows the fine lyrics equal time to shine (the chord changes were a very excellent touch--in fact, I think you should rename this "Sorry" maybe!) I really liked this, thank you both for the great work! We all have said and done things it's too late to take back and this piece focuses on that life occurrence very well John. Also, congratulations to you both on your 29th anniversary! Michael

what a dynamic duo we have here! Such thoughtful lyrics and backstory. The feelings really come through in the song. Your guitar work is so excellent (as always) and the blending of voices works beautifully. This makes me want to go back and see what other songs of yours Anne has sung on. Congrats on the 29th anniversary - I agree, the number alone speaks volumes about finding ways to work through the predictable challenges of coupledom. I'm so appreciative of you and your wonderful music John!

no one was more surprised than i to find myself here. 8) yes, you DID try to pan that lead off, but i know where i'm meant to be in life. i thought we did a great job of quasi-bossing each other around. :) there's something about the energy in this music - especially guitar in the outro - that really grabs me and makes me want to pay attention to what's happening there, every single time. i think the whole SORRY section was totally cool, progression-wise. thanks for thinkin of me for this one, John.

I wasn't sure
I knew it was a bit out of the norm and the verse/chorus was a bit repetitious, that's what made Anne's backing so affective to help add variety to the song. I was trying to decide if the ending progression would fit and used it anyway. This could go longer and I think like you said a lead could have kept the listener. I didn't so it was kept short. There's always a chance for another version. Thanks for your insight especially from a musician like you.

I'm late to the game
but still. The guitar work on this is great! The subject matter has me squirming. After 32 years of marriage, I have been here all to often. I love the chromatic step down in the chorus, that is a signature point for the song. Good move using Ann on the vocals, your voices work well together (although she can probably sing with anybody). Also, I hear a lot of guys complaining about noise when they try and capture an acoustic guitar. I for one love that ambiance and have heard it in many a recording. I think the guitar work here and the ways its recorded and produced is a highlight of this recording.
