Description
natalie is actually a real mannequin. a client of where i work owns the mannequin and is named natalie. the mannequin ended up at my work place for a few days, sitting in different places around the office. i said i was going to write a song about her… and so i did.

there are a few neat effects i used on this. one is a pog 2 by electro harmonix. you can hear it at the beginning and the mid break, it sounds somewhat like a pipe organ. the other effect was from a digitech rp 500 multi effect pedal board. it was a whammy effect that drops the pitch down a octave, however when i pressed it for the wah wah a odd filtering effect would result. so you’ll hear the solos switching between them in real time.

Lyrics
Hey, Hey Natalie

she let out one of her syncopated sighs
glancing over the table with devilish eyes
the claims she made reveled her life

hey, hey, natalie
you’re as hard as rock candy
hey, hey, natalie
you’re a mannequin on display

always wore the best dress i would guess
you hear all the voices silence you keep
who ever caught the twinkle in your eyes

hey, hey, natalie
you’re as hard as rock candy
hey, hey, natalie
you’re a mannequin on display

someone stole your hands does it hurt very much
thick skinned and maybe a little chipped way down inside
i’m afraid you may be sensory deprived

hey, hey, natalie
you’re as hard as rock candy
hey, hey, natalie
you’re a mannequin on display
hey, hey, natalie
you’re a mannequin on display

Yeah... Natalie
Nice intro, with a distorted wah... Sets it up for another fine tune. Dang, Vic, you keep bringing the hits... Clapton is jealous as he listens to this (I'm sure he's already listened). And Natalie is feeling the vibe - look out!

cheers...

Hey hey
Great sounding guitar work. I've always wondered about the POG, is that a trick you tire of? It sounds very cool here. (I have an EH Freeze, which I've used twice in all the time I've had it.)

the pog 2 does have some interesting sounds with the octaves (1 & 2 down, 1 & 2 up) they also added a swell and some filtering effects. i've had the thing for around a year. it is cool but the price tag is pretty high for what it does.

Oh,
I love that wah growling guitar….as always your production and performance are supreme and it just came to me that your 'sound' always puts me in mind of maybe wondering into a nightclub in a Batman or Superman film and hearing a group on stage playing exactly like this LOL…wonderful stuff Vic, wonderful production skills, regards M

it would be cool to be a sweating band in a super hero film. i would have to have a guitar with a utility belt embedded in it for the full effect

Hey, Hey, Natalie
Vic, some very interesting guitar sounds ... I like when you play the deep growly wah sound. Definitely shows off your guitar talents... drums are well thought out and your vocals sound great. Very creative approach overall!
Cheers

yeah that wah sure could get gutteral. i guess it's interacting with the whammy effect somehow to get the filtering effect.

Great playing and use of FX...everything sounds like it belongs. The song has a good backbone with just enough grit...that almost sounds like a Floyd Rose Whammy there at the end....Good stuff Vic!

Very cool effects are well used to supplement an already great rocker. Solos are strong and vibrant and pull me in entirely. With the traditionally solid vocals, beats and production all I can say is you've done it again Vic. Thanks!

Great concept and some quality songwriting, Vic. The guitar tones and playing are stellar and the drums really drive things along. Now, as long as Natalie stays at work and doesn't make it home you are OK... :-) Thanks, Peter.

Really enjoyed this Vic
Fitting for the subject. I never thought of writing about a manniquen, it's a great idea but I've never been around one for an extended amount of time unless my wife is shopping for clothes. There are some shallow minded ones I've wanted to take photos of at the mall. Thanks for sharing.

Vic, you really know how to turn em out. Instantly recognizable as your sound - unorthodox (Reminds a bit of Replacement's)...but darker. Love the wah guitar in this setting and the fact that you do it all is a testament to your talents. Rock on!

ideas are backing up. it does take me a while to settle in and start recording a piece. once i'm into it, it's pretty quick. sometimes though it takes a while to come up with lyrics.... not like the old mj days when i would have a new tune every week

All that wah, wah stuff...
...you begin with is SO cool, Vic. And what a great idea for a song! A bit spooky when you think about it, almost like Natalie is real. I like the driving rhythm of this piece and the dip into a bit of craziness around 2:25 and following with that stellar bridge (and guitar lead work). You have this arrangement and all the effects DOWN. Woah! I am so impressed with this whole production. (See: I'm not as square as you might think!)

nah, never considered you square. :-)
the very fact that you listen to music outside of your own style says a lot about being very open minded.
i think this is the nastiest wah sound i have captured yet.

the electro harmonix pog 2 does a pretty cool job of making a guitar sound like a few different organs or simulate a 12 string, plus some other things.

the drums are logics drummer. i'm starting to get a handle on what you really can do with them. there is one small section that i made a mistake on but have since fixed

Absolutely love the guitar work!
What more can I say. I could go on and on about the imagery of comparing a real woman to a mannequin, but Natalie IS a mannequin. This is a good, solid, chug-ing rock tune, but the guitars are the stars.
