Description
I was going through some old stuff and found this studio master from a few years back. Recorded on a Yamaha C7 at Triad Studios in Redmond, WA. This was right before I bought my first Mac and discovered GarageBand. That, for the first time opened a way to orchestrate around some of my piano music - something I had always heard bits of in my head when I played, but without the technology to do it. Garageband (and later Logic), various orchestral and piano software, and especially a lot of help from some incredibly skilled musicians at MJ, changed all of that. It's been such a great ride, even if I haven't done much in the way of orchestrating in the last couple of years. At the core of it, I'm just a piano player who, like most musicians, particularly appreciates getting to record on a really, really nice instrument. As I recall, I bought the cheapest studio session time possible, which means this was done in the middle of the night.

Yay!
New/old post by Karen. Still don't get how you pianists get two hands working at the same time, but this does sound lovely.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I think I recognize your style.....

Lovely piece. Do you remember how it felt recording it? With all my electronics I'm always happy with the final result, but I don't often get the thrill of instant satisfaction from playing in a space with great acoustics, as a studio can give you. And I don't even have a real piano, so I miss the feedback of feeling and hearing all that music go through you when I record.

hi Victor
yes, there's nothing quite like being in an actual studio with an engineer who's skilled at just how to place the mics inside and outside the piano. i kinda like being able to hear the pedal sounds (in moderation). thanks for the listen

can hear that "cuddly" sound of hardware all over this piece. the sound itself eases and flows softly. i think the way you performed deserved nothing less.

Rubato supremo...
...Ah...You tap into a style I enjoy so very much, Karen. Immediately, this track SOUNDS terrific because it is recorded on a great piano (the C7 is quite a special instrument and I am very familiar with it). For all the wonderfulness of digital "pianos", none can beat the real thing — yet. This is a very gentle composition and I am sure you can hear all sorts of orchestral tunes just waiting to be released with this as chordal background. I hope you will pursue those ideas in a new iteration of this peaceful improvisation. All the warm basic stuff is already present. (Do you have any of this written down? Would make it a lot easier to move ahead without having to refigure all those chords.) Anyway, a very pleasant listen that clearly demonstrates your skill as a pianist and interpreter.

Hi Paul
written down????? heh heh - i don't think so! (that really wouldn't make it easier for me!) i actually did an orchestration to this early on at MJ (long ago deleted) - it was quite atrocious. i'm kinda happy to leave this as a solo piano piece - although you never know! thanks always for your support and encouragement here, it means so much to me!

I just knew that I'd love this piano piece. It reminds me of a tone poem, and I can hear lyrics, but not words, as this piece phrases along.

I'm with Paul on this, and look forward to any new work on this magical mix.

Take care.

Those...Midnight
Studio work outs are the best, spent a lot of money in
my day as well...
Loved the midnight work outs because no one was
around no interference from the out side world because
it is fast asleep..
They must've just hit record and let it run, you got your
moneys worth on this track because it feels free and timeless
warm comfortable as well...
The good old days, it's good to look back to see where
you've been... Understanding that, it's not hard to see where your going...History tells you alot about the future

Well done...Karen

A Treat
The loveliness of this piece does not need any orchestration as it conveys everything it needs to just as it is. How you can sit and just have this beautiful music pour out of you I don't know, and even having a wonderful instrument as inspiration still doesn't quite explain the magic here. Of course, the magic is you.

Thank you for dusting this off for us to brighten our day.

Be well Karen,
Doug

The wonder of just a single piano in a good room with real tape deck (I am assuming) puts all the plug-ins, loops, parameters and automations into an wonderfully diminished perspective. It must have been a very gratifying night for you. Beautiful.

wow
skunk2 - or maybe you're skunk1? anyway, it's pretty cool that each of you came by for your own separate listens - that's a real honor. as i recall this was the first time i'd done studio work where the technology was all digital - no 1/2" tape anymore. and i must admit, i like the sound side by side with other 1/2"tape recordings. that was a different studio though, so i guess it's comparing apples and oranges in several ways. anyway - i agree that there's nothing like a real, big, acoustic piano. thanks for coming by!

Beautiful...
This is a particularly satisfying post. And such a testament to why you always bring this site to life when you post:) The piano has a saturated, warm and full sound that comes to live with your particular style and composition.

Tremendous skill here to be able to play with this kind of emotional depth in a studio setting. I can only imagine that night recordings help with this calm energy.

I also like the pacing and how you repeat the theme in all the right places. Truly enjoyable and equally impressive. What a great idea to post this here.

You KNOW what I am going to say!
You already know that I have always greatly admired your solo piano playing. It has always been superb, and this selection fairly sparkles.

It is especially gratifying to hear this piece, played on a real, acoustic piano - and one of the best instruments, at that: the Yamaha C7.

Your rubatos, the changes of tempos - the nuances, the insistent pressing down of the keys in the "key" moments in this piece - cannot be duplicated as well on digital format. No matter how 'faithful' the tonal reproduction of the supposedly GREAT pianos that are sampled.

Your playing ebbs and flows in a remarkable way here. It is a very heartfelt, emotional communication of music, Karen, and I truly SALUTE your talents!

Thank you so much for sharing this early piece - BEFORE Garageband, yet! This is just marvelous.

Hi Cameron
what an incredible comment - i'm kinda floored! you're so right about the gratification of hearing a recording from a beautiful piano, kept in pristine condition, mic'ed exactly right by someone who knows exactly what he's doing.

i've been listening to this recording and getting the song "practiced up" again - i hadn't played it in several years and it's so easy to forget how to play a certain piece. but with practice that muscle memory thing kicks in and i've about got it back. i plan to make a little video (just using my iphone) of playing it for my mom's iPad (ongoing project for her). if i get that far, i'll post the video - which will be the exact opposite from this studio recording in terms of audio fidelity, but it might still be kinda fun.

thanks so much for coming by - great to hear from you! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Cameron!

Lovely music
Beautifully played, with nice dynamics between the almost stand still halfway to the so called "pounding" (I actually can't hear that) around 5.25 etc. There are a few things I don't understand here, though. Apart from your playing technique, which is quite beyond me, I don't understand how a session time in the middle of the night can be cheaper than during the day, as long as there are people to be paid special night rates (or is that just Sweden ;-) Also, I don't understand that I hadn't commented on this earlier. I certainly have listened to it several times, but perhaps mainly on the phone and it's a bit tricky to comment on that. Ah well. As usual, really just want to say I listened and enjoyed :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Hi Henke
you know, several responses i've made to comments on this page have disappeared, and i've had to re-write them the next day. so i suspect there's something glitchy going on with the site in the comment department.

yes, studio time here in the states is cheaper during night time hours - or at least it still was the last time i was in a studio, which has been about 8 years ago now. i think because the only person there was the sound engineer - no front office staff - i recall the engineer had to come and let me in the locked door. so maybe because just one person is being paid, the rates are cheaper?

thanks so much for coming back to try again on commenting - it means a lot to have your words of support here!

Karen
Your music is so inspiring and beautiful. If I played the piano I would be tempted to quit after realizing I could never play with this much passion and feeling. Knowing that you are such a kind and caring person makes your songs that much more special. :)

One day I would love to sing on such a beautifully played piano piece.

Oh No! I'm late to school again. Sorry. Anyway...

A beautiful piece and it sounds great on that C7— but that's because capable hands are at its keys. The (heart) beat goes on throughout this song and ALL of your lovely compositions. What a wonderful gift you have, Karen. ;)

Nice work :)
I used to practice for such a long time on my old Yamahas as well before I had good enough PC's to use midi, mainly their operating systems were awful like Windows XP and Vista. but you couldn't play tons of games on a Mac like on a PC so was always torn between them. Luckily these days windows 7 64 bit is the greatest operating system ever, i get tons of games and DAW/midi functionality tied up in one little package.

You really are such a kind, generous person, Karen, in a really rare way. All the beauty and love inside you is in this song. Many people who play with your kind of technical excellence don't also bring your level of emotion to the performance, but this brought me to tears. Thank you! xo L
