Description
Ok, remember those cop and detective shows back in the 80's. They all had these keynote themes that when you heard them you knew that your show was starting so you put down whatever you were doing and rushed in to get the best spot on the sofa. You delighted as the theme music played and clips of your favorite sleuth wizzed by. There they were deflecting an overhand right, discovering a body, facing or brandishing a gun, and finally smiling toothily into the camera. I think it might have all started when the "Hawaii Five O" theme hit in the 70's. The standard was set. So, here is my entry into the fray. I played a Telecaster guitar and Rogue bass. Drums were composed in easy drummer. The orchestral instruments are Garritan Personal Orchestra and the synth is Omnisphere.

TV Theme
Nice concept, Stephen, and very well delivered. Immediate and full of action. Hawaii Five O really was the benchmark, in this regard, wasn't it. It was such an identifiable, dynamic piece of music. Almost sounds like the stirrings of an MJ challenge here... Thanks, Peter.

Pete,
Thanks for the listen. Another one that I have often thought of was the British mysteries on PBS. Some of them have really moving themes. Like the theme to Detective Morse.

The good-old Ventures!
I love the Ventures, and particularly that beefed-up orchestrated theme song they spun out... this one does indeed have the 80s TV-drama-theme-song feel, excellent... brass is always tricky, but you pulled it off here, sounds great. My only suggestion (since I love good brass licks) might be to double the horns with crescendo-trombones an octave lower, and make their release a tiny bit later than the trumpets, to make it sound a little more "live/real".

Very cool! Funny, my wife and I just recently finished watching "Scarecrow and Mrs. King", since I'd never seen it and it was one of her faves, so we bought the 4-seasons on DVD and watched them together over the past 6+ months, great fun. I remember the music written in it, with different re-interpretations of the same theme song in different episodes, to be really well done.

ttfn,
Drakonis

I love watching many of the old TV series with my wife too. We're particularly fond of the Brits, but any good cop, detective or mystery series will get us going. I like the idea with the trombones, maybe i'll give that a try (unless you want to?). Thanks for stoping by.

I Remember too
That just covered about 10 different TV show! Luv that flowing feel without losing its edge. What came to mind while listening is "sierra on-line PQ1" Those guys are talented too. Looks like everything locked away in your mind is surfacing, glad I can be here to hear it!

I always appreciate hearing from you and getting your perspective. Do you mean the video game Police Quest 1? That music is all electronic isn't it? Maybe you mean Police Quest 2?

I can just see the helicopter shot, the cop sliding over the hood of his Camaro and racing around to jump into his seat through the window. Farah Fawcett's hair blowing in the breeze. Well done!

70's...
Great job! Within seconds you're taken back to a simpler time when there were few but memorable shows tv. You're doing a great job evoking those memories, but also show tremendous skill in the instrumentation.

I may be just a little too young to know the original Hawaii Five O (although I do remember watching re-runs of Magnum), but old enough to understand what it takes to produce a piece of music like this! Well done.

Exactly
That was what inspired it. I think I was playing around with trumpets an trying out themes, Next,I had an Idea for a lead in with a synth and drums. Then I knew it needed a kickin' drum part to drive the song. I decided to play yhe bass rather than be lazy and use the keyboard because I wanted a part that had the bounce and drive to match the drums. I added the guitar part last because I thought the first time through it was a bit thin sounding.

EZDrummer is the key
EZDrummer has everything a body needs to get really good drums if you spend the time. Of course the base package is not extremely useful. However, when you get some add on MIDI packs, you can at least get the style you want and then you can edit and tweak to your hearts content. Thanks for the listen.

I guess a lot of my material is what one might call eclectic. Sometimes opera, sometimes film score, rock, pop, folk, Jazz, blues, poetry, etc. I go whichever way the wind blows. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Fits the bill
It sounds almost too grand for a TV show. Maybe it's the version for the movie?

Thanks. Maybe I should have used a different library for the trumpets. I used the ones from GPO.

Well that was fun
Maybe the old memory cells are not as sharp in remembering which shows used the trumpet lead as you do but this captures it brilliantly. Break out the cords and mutton chop side burns….

Police Quest Series
Early music from Sierra was midi, and they kept up with audio technology.
After the merge with ActiveVision it was never the same. I use to stop by there in the late 80's coming back from Yosemite. The music by Sierra was exciting and TV Theme has that same feel...

-just for fun

Loved it...
...it's like an amalgam of every Quinn Martin TV show I remember my dad watching as a kid--they are all here. Very authentic (and authentic sounding instruments!) and I just got EZ Drummer myself, thanks to you, and hope I can utilize it as skillfully and deftly as you've done here Stephen. Great job on this, thanks!
