Echo In The Wind

Description
I will be the first to admit that I have not studied Native American music, instruments, lore, culture to any significant degree. That having been said, a friend recently approached me to write some music to accompany a reading of parts of Longfellow's epic "Hiawatha." ECHO IN THE WIND came after working on a couple of vocal solos and I thought I would share it here. Quite different for me, regardless the inspiration or my lack of real cultural understanding of Native American music and instrumentation. ... The wood flute is from Garritan's Aria Player / World Music collection. There are no other instruments involved. If you are interested in seeing the score, it can be found here: www.paulpage.org/Other_Arrangements.html

The accompanying photo was taken by my good friend Kathie Lynch, a long-time Yellowstone Park devotee and lover of the wolf culture and, really, the great outdoors, period.

I hope you will enjoy this peaceful little song.

Quite a departure for you. These flutes have a wonderful etherealness. A peaceful piece to listen to at the end of a tough day. Thanks.

organ-ic :-)
My native American flute is pentatonic, and has only 5 holes, thus a rather small range, and makes it tricky to think up anything to play on it! I find that it does really well with long mournful notes (as you play here), and also with little special-tricks, like letting your breath fall off slowly at the end of certain notes to get that pitch-bend-down effect, and lots of trills and breathy tonguing techniques... which are REALLY hard to pull off via MIDI, without meticulous post-processing! Sounds like you did some of that, I could swear I heard some end-bending?

At first, the long notes felt too "perfect", no breathy unevenness, but very soon I was lulled into the beautifully lyrical breeze you created. Very nice to listen to. And now I see why you wanted me to play more of my flute throughout on my ironically similarly-themed/timed piece. Perhaps Thanksgiving causes us both to be more reflective? :-)

Drakonis

Very well done...Paul...
It has a warm distant depth to it, that I really enjoy...
Very real in it's message of peace and harmony, I can
hear this all day...
It's connection to the soul is clear, the view of a Vally
with a Water Fall, Life, Freedom, Happiness, Tranquility
it evokes all of this and more...
I think you've out done yourself on this one...

This is what it is, very real...

Hi Paul.....
This is a beautiful, mournful, meloncholic, nostalgic piece of music. I think kind of fitting both for the subject matter you composed it for and the state of the union at the current time.

Things come to pass and, with the very recent passing of JFK's assassination, your music gives pause for thought on what might have been, or what has been lost.

Take care.

Paul

All that from a (virtual) piece of wood :)
This is a pleasant surprise! Amazing how much emotion and depth can come from just one instrument. Very well done! Expression pedal or are the bends/modulations drawn in?

Rather than study and be culturally correct
you've chosen to let the accumulated knowledge of your years, filtered through the various opinions, prejudices, and general emotional responses, guide your mind (and fingers) as it shapes this poignant, and very beautiful, interpretation of what SHOULD be heard. A lovely, restful, thought-provoking listen, and a definite keeper. Thank you.

Wind
You captured the essence with your performance.
The instrument had specific use varying from nations
Your very dynamic performance is appropriate.
As a small boy I still remember the sound of the flute when my great grandmother fulfilled her earth course.
Peaceful, indeed...

This reminds me of this incredible meditation CD I have. I've listened to it about 100 times. I never get tired of the wooden flute. I can see why the native Americans, after carving it, just said- "yup that's it! Just add some drums and we're good to go". Not to bee too flip, but this is a gorgeous piece. Thanks so much for creating - and - sharing it!

I love that title. No cultural understanding? That's Ok, this presented no questions. It pulls you in and absorbs you, and you it. Enjoyed the calm and peace. D/L'd so I can have that again. Thanks, Paul.

I think it sounds genuine enough. Maybe some stylizations that we are used to hearing in ethnic flutes are either not present or more subtle here. Overall it is very lovely. It is really exciting to hear you branching out. You are an excellent composer and an accomplished player so its great that you are trying something new

Just lovely Paul
I am amazed at your versatility.

Beautifully put together and very effective.

I'm not sure it matters that it is authentic as it stands by itself as a wonderfully evocative piece.

Cheers

Hauntingly beautiful ...
Who, me?   ... Want to read the score?   (P.S.:   you missed a grace-note in measures 18 and 20 ...)   ;-)

Hauntingly ... B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.   Certainly a rendition well in keeping with Native American tradition, and appropriate to a reading of Hiawatha.

Hmmm ... (should I share this?) ... “Native American music” ... once I was helping to lead a workshop in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, and (after the participants had bustled past, doing whatever was “their thing” ...) I found myself alone with an elderly Navajo who was playing the flute with only the canyon as his audience.   Except...   (and you are quite free to make of this what you will) ...   there were Other Flutes.   No one else (on this sphere) was playing.   No one else was around.   And, yet... I heard Them.   Plain as day.

Organic...
…. as in "of life", this is a cool wet cloth on a warm summer-baked brow. Pulling off 6 minutes of singing from the heart with a simple instrument like this is no mean feat. The cool part is that when it works the 'less is more' effect takes over and a simple solo instrument with only its own echoes speaks volumes and more than a polyphonic instrument ever could. The art of course is just that - when it works. I would say making it work requires both inspiration and an open heart.

Masterful Paul. Thank you for letting us download a little slice of mindfulness and wonder.

Doug

Beautiful Paul...
...I can't find a more adequate description than what others have mentioned above, but yes, this was something entirely different from you and both educational and enjoyable for me as well, thank you! I have a question for you: I have the Aria Player as well, and sometimes when working with the wind instruments, I notice if my fingering is too fast, nothing registers on the intended note--no sound. Is this something that can be fixed maybe in the velocity setting? I've probably toyed with that as well, I just don't remember now. If you have any suggestions, that would be great (then again, it could be my crummy PC behind it all!) Thanks for the enchantment here and that is such a gorgeous image too! Michael
