Come Along With Me

Description
The creative impulse to write this song was hearing an eight-year-old niece received a guitar for her birthday .. and I started thinking about all of the joys and frustrations that might come along with being handed that gift. Here, I only sing about the joys that can happen through the imaginative power of making music .. and conveniently overlook all those hours and hours of practice it takes to make it sound good.

Lyrics
COME ALONG WITH ME

Oh won’t you come along with me
Take a little ride on my Fender six string
A sonic journey
It could spin out of control
When you let your imagination go
Let the good vibrations make you aware
Of synchronistic joys we can share
Together we'll make a fine pair
Feel the wind whipping in your hair
Embrace the sun as it kisses your skin
Feel the warmth spreading deep within
And when we reach the journey's end
You and I will be friends
Won’t you come along with me?

haha
... my first instrument was a sears flat top guitar .... the salesman said "this will get you married off young if ya an't careful sonny".... after two weeks of finding out what finger pain can be I changed to drums. Quirky cool tune!

How it starts
Ha-ha .. that's a sales line I've never heard before!

The guitar I learned to play on was an old arch-top found in the attic at my grandparents house. I hauled it downstairs and asked whose it was. It turned out it was my father's; he had bought it mail order back when he was a teenager. To my surprise, he picked it up and tuned it .. and the next thing you know my Dad started strumming and my uncle started singing "Rag Tag Country Joe." They went through something like eight verses in an impromptu performance. I was dumbfounded. I think that was the seminal moment that led .. eventually .. to a lifetime of playing guitar.

"It could spin out of control" So true! I love these lyrics. You're a master weaver of quirky guitar lines that just work together. Very cool mix of twangy tones. Much enjoyed!

Control Central
As much as we like to fiddle around with the control knobs when making music .. it's always fun when things spin off to unexpected places.

Wonderful work!
As unique and quirky as ever.

It's quite a journey you're making. Russia to New York via the Balkans.

Excellent Mr Smith :-)

Cheers

The Journey
Remember how thrilling it was to learn the first C-chord and finally play all of the strings cleanly?

"Doing your own thing with a friend for life": I like that summation. If that's where 50 years of playing takes you .. it was well-worth going on the journey.

Once again there is no way to explain this stuff!
Every hippie ethic is lampooned. And so on. Keep that angst burning

Hey Warren!
Your tunes always have such interesting guitar tones and it's always fun to listen to your songs. I appreciate that you are willing to take chances with your overall sound- after all, that's how ground breaking music is made, right?

Tonality
While in the early days of learning to play a guitar I attempted to imitate others, for me the thrill of it has always been trying to write my own songs. Trying to find the right guitar tone is a part of the process. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but you're right .. that's a big part of what keeps it interesting.

Sigh!
Reminds me of when we got a guitar for my favorite granddaughter. My son-in-law is a guitar teacher so, what could be more perfect? The visions of Family Von trap quickly faded though, when she used it as a fashion runway for her Barbies. That does not take away from Uncle Warren's effort or dash his dreams. I appreciate it more than you know.

Pathways
The guitar as a fashion runway .. that's priceless!

For most people it's probably impossible to predict their pathway to music. Mine was a mix of on-and-off starts and stops .. that eventually turned into a lifelong recreational pursuit.

There was a period of about five years where I staged elaborate Von Trapp-family-style Holiday productions with the kids : )

This was great Warren!
Not only the lyrics/melody (well performed by you) but that delightful little "Twilight Zone"-ish feel in the arrangement (and just right because what makes us love music is still at heart a real mystery to me) The guitar work done on the bridge was just captivating, rather reminded me a bit of zithers for some reason (love that instrument by the way, perhaps I was thinking of the theme from "Tokapi" for some reason; they do have a very middle-European flavor to them, how the strings are played out here). Very unique style and extremely engaging and I rarely thank people for allowing me to save their work, but yeah, thanks--this is great, I most definitely felt that warmth spreading deep inside! Ha-ha .. well I did tour the Topkapi a few years back .. so maybe that's where my zithering guitar work derives from : ) Thanks for the kind comments and support.

Unconventional, outside the box in every way, but somehow familiar. Cool weaving guitar parts keep this gem interesting; lyrics are well written and sung with purpose. Nice post!

Sounds like an outtake on the zither from The Third Man :-) Your niece has a role model that will take her on endless trips of fun and provide hours of enjoyment. This will be a priceless memory at her 21st... Thanks, Peter.

Interesting tuning...
...But I think it works because of the nature of the lyrics and the thought that any journey begins with tentative steps. This is really a one-of-a-kind composition and performance that is absolutely true to itself, taking no prisoners along the way. It's a pleasant experience to hear something so completely different than anything else.

The Big Idea
A composition often doesn't start so much as a big idea .. but grows out of a little idea by making a series of small steps .. one after another .. which sometimes builds and builds until it becomes .. what seems like a big idea : )

Interesting words
I think I hear a bit of les paul too !
I think I hear a bit of Walk like an Egyptian.

I like the lyrics , "take a ride on my fender six string" . Kind of reminds me of the beatles magical mystery tour were they say something like that is well or is that Sgt. Peppers. I hate getting older :) Thanks for sharing and being a great part of MJ !

Hearing is believing
One of my regrets in life is not making the trek to the Iridium Jazz Club here in New York to see and hear Les Paul play. I almost did it once or twice, but somehow could never overcome my reluctance to go clubbing. Perhaps that is a sign of aging : )
