Roll On (To You)- Them Talking Monkeys Mix

Description
A couple and a half years ago I had posted a version of this song of the band writing this song on the spot. We've since re-worked it a little bit and use it to start off every one of our gigs on our annual Summer Backyards and Driveways Tour.

This is a board mix of one of our practice sessions. I hooked my little Tascam recording to the mixer. Other than the effects we're using nothing was done to process the sound otherwise.

So not a new song, but one I hope you enjoy. Eventually, I hope to get this properly tracked (though I'm secretly afraid a that might drain the song of its energy).

Song art is: Down on His Luck by Frederick McCubbin (1889)

Lyrics
It’s been a hard two weeks and I’m down on my luck
Got four bald tires on my pickup truck
The girl who used to love me walked out the door
Said she’s missing something that we never had before

I’m gonna roll on to you
I’m gonna roll on to you

I go to work and put in my time
60 hour weeks just to keep what’s mine
I work real hard and I earn my pay
When Friday night comes I’m gonna drink it all away

And then I’ll roll on to you
Gonna roll on to you (3 times)

Now who’s to say I should change my ways
But life without her is way beyond strange
Now I messed up a time or two
Oh but letting her go’s the worst thing I could do

Thanks!
Credit goes to Toby who's playing lead guitar. My son, Colin, is on drums, Andre is on bass. I'm singing and playing acoustic. Sometimes Andre plays lead and Toby bass... depends on the day- they both rock the lead in differently awesome styles. I don't know that we've ever played it the same way twice. Thanks for stopping by!

Guitar work
Ha-ha .. about the same time you were listening (and commenting) on my new song .. I was listening to yours.

Love all of those guitar licks sprinkled throughout this piece. The variety is endless .. and then you step up the attack with sustained leads. Nice guitar work. I especially like the moment when you drop down briefly into the bass strings .. only to climb back up the ladder.

There's a freshness to the rawness here. That may be more important than trying to perfect it.

Hi Warren
It's funny how that works!

Glad you liked it- the guys take turns between guitar and bass so the song is always played a little differently each time. That's great because we don't get tired of playing it and it always seems fresh.

I hear what you say about the rawness- maybe I should just find a way to record multiple channels from the mixer so I can work with the individual tracks.

Adam
I was pulled in by the first two lines of lyrics. This song is loose and direct in the style of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, which I like very much. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you, Tommy
Those lines have remained exactly as I pulled them out of my posterior section when we originally improvised the song. I think they set the tone of the song.

I'm a pretty big Neil and Crazy Horse fan so I really appreciate the comparison. If you haven't yet, I recommend reading Neil's Biography entitled "Shakey". Good stuff. Thanks, again!

I hear that!
All those hours standing on concrete and pavement can be tough! Still, it's always a thrill to play in front of people. One of our most fun gigs last summer was in a barn playing for ten adults, four kids of various ages a dog and a couple of cats. The cats didn't care and the dog left half way through the second set. We didn't take it personally!

Thanks for the listen and the comment!

Roll on
Plenty of energy in the performance. The lead guitar adds colour to the performance. Strong vocal. Solid work form the bass and drums. All good, Adam!

It's tough
chasing the feel of the demo sometimes. Zappa solved it by working with live recordings and tidying them accordingly in the studio. Maybe you could do that here. I can hear what you're after in the guitar that follows each vocal. Doing it in the studio might kill that response. Good work, guys.

That's what I meant!
Really I'd like to just get control of each track for mixing purposes. I can't see us doing this any way other than live. Thank you!

Hi Vic
Appreciate your comment- we think it's a good one to open with because of the energy. Tends to set a good tone for the evening.

Solid work
This has such a strong pull to it, extremely difficult to resist getting pulled into it too! Great ensemble work--and those guitar riffs sure are greatly pleasing! I liked the lead vocal on this too, it has that "take charge" kind of authority to it that is the icing on this cake Adam. Could easily "see" you all performing this (that's always a sign from somewhere in my head that I'm truly enjoying what I'm hearing by the way). Excellent stuff--and I hope you'll be rolling on more like this in the future, thank you!

Thank you, Michael
I had posted a rough version of this a while back... by rough I mean it was a live recording of us making up what was to become this song. A little more fleshed out now and the guitar player on the first recording is playing bass on this one. Both guys are extremely capable and the leads on a given day tend to change. It's pretty cool!

Thanks for the nice comment!

Roll On (To You)- Them Talking Monkeys Mix
Great live mix. Lots of energy - love all the imperfections- they're what make it great. "Backyards and Driveways Tour" killer name! Powerful vocals, solid harmonies. Thanks!

Thanks!
To be candid, none of the other guys really sing so I use a TC Helicon Harmony pedal for live harmonies- it's a great tool that I try not to overuse. Generally, this song is much more polished now but I never seem to record the best ones. Mostly, I posted this because I tend to scratch/ sketched out songs but rarely post something that been worked on after the fact. This is the exception.

Slight Doors y flavour to this
...or it might be ...just been listening to some ukulele covers of Doors songs....

Like the way this romps along with a killer lead guit riff over the acoustic...

drums and bass drive it all with vim and vigour.....

Roll On (To You)
The song has a real "open road" flavour and is a quality listen. I enjoyed it a lot. The artwork is an Australian classic, too. Thanks, Peter.

Sang in high school many years ago- I've been playing guitar on and off for the last twenty years and still don't know what the heck I'm doing. Don't ask me what chords, notes, or keys I'm playing in- I use the force when I play! I wrote my first two... [see more]
