I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

Description
Getting over one of my all time greatest sinus infections (I get these a lot--devious septum and what have you) but out of pure, unbridled sadism, thought I'd record something just to see how much my face hurt when I sang the high notes. It did! I'm wondering now about the advisability of rubbing Absorbine Junior™ on my face, however...

Anyway, having lived in Minnesota for almost 20 years before moving to Alabama less than a year ago, I'm no stranger to what this song is all about! How I miss those halcyon mornings walking to the bus stop while my blood was turning into cranberry sherbet and the only things that weren't frozen by the time it arrived were my hair and fingernails. Those were the good ol' days, let me tell you!

Thanks for listening and keep warm!

Michael

Written by Irving Berlin, 1936
Arrangement and accompaniment: Big Al McPike*

*PS: I've not given up on that backing track I'm creating--still working on it, and thanks again to all who gave me such good advice on how it's sounding so far!

Thanks so much Cees
..really, I wasn't particularly happy with my vocal on this, but I was working with a little limitation there with the sinus problems, so I'm relieved if ANYBODY liked this and I much appreciate your kind words (I also swallowed a few vowels on this, always a problem I have to be more careful of, ugh!) You take care now and keep up the fine work you and Bing do for us! Michael

Fun
This has a very old school (rat pack era) feel. You sound a bit like Robert Goulet, a great singer. Good luck fighting your sinus infection!

Thank you Thomas!
Mmmmmm...I wish I had a deep voice like Mr. Goulet, but that's kind of you to say! Yes, the sinuses (ironically because I do love singing) is perhaps (and luckily for me!) the only chronic problem I have (deviated septum with a spur--ugh!) and I may pursue rhinoplasty to finally fix that problem. This last bout was all the impetus I need to have that done, let me tell you! Hey, thanks for stopping by and it's greatly appreciated! I grew up listening to all the big band singers--I guess it shows! Michael

Thanks so much Safe as Milk!
Yes, it is a really top flight arrangement--it's based on either Sinatra's or Martin's version (I don't remember now) and when I heard it I just HAD to sing it! Much obliged for those generous word! Take care now, Michael

Sinus relief!
I'm really happy you could not detect was going on upside my face when I recorded this (although I know I could do better with the high notes now that I'm better--those literally did cause me a bit of pain, but you know, all in the name of scientific progress, etc.) Thanks again Adam; it's highly appreciated! Take good care now, Michael

5 degrees?!
Well, they say the weather patterns are shifting, but I grew up in southern New Jersey and don't ever remember it getting THAT cold! Whew! Thanks so very much for your kind words. Generally, I do songs that are 75+ years old; this one is 78. At some point in the 1970s, I believe it was, a big chunk of Berlin's music became public domain, mainly because his family and music publisher were too busy dickering around with each other in the courts to notice these things were about to expire. I've read similar things about movies as well and it always amazes me how that happens. Take good care now, Michael

From 5 Degrees to 110 Degrees
The guy just above you was remarking it was 5F degrees where he was and now I'm looking at 110 degrees in your stomping grounds Philip. After I finish writing this I have to go look at your profile to see where you live--Australia isn't it? Anyway, that's HOT! Nice hearing from you and it's so much appreciated, thanks again and stay cool now! Michael

More Strings!
Most of the singers of the style I aspire to generally preferred having LOTS of strings--that's because they hide a lot of flaws in the vocalist's delivery (heaven only knows how horrifying this would have been had I only a musical saw and maracas behind me, if that's the case!) Thanks again Graham--take good care now, Michael

Channeling Sinatra
Michael,
You are so right-on-the-money with this performance! The arrangement is, of course, amazing, but you give the vocal such warmth and verve that it's impossible to not smile as you breeze through each phrase with such effortless singing. You complain about sinus issues, but none of them are evident here. You never disappoint. Another stellar performance. The Vegas lounge lizards can just eat their hearts out. Super.

Channeling Huntz Hall (maybe!)
Actually, I was studying Sinatra's version of this just to see if he too had a problem with hitting the notes on "storm" and "form", etc. He did okay, but then I listened to Dean Martin's and Johnny Mathis's versions and was utterly delighted to find they kind of messed those up a little. Paul, you sing, and perhaps you know of that vocalist "syndrome" some males experience going directly from their midrange to a higher note, that's not even all that higher from their midrange! I had a teacher explain this to me once, nobody knows why that is, which is why I had to pause a bit before executing (in the penal sense of that word!) them. You are so very generous; I greatly appreciate hearing from, and thanks again! Michael

Hey Bud!
Thanks again, so very much! I did have to sing a little differently than usual due to my woes (and really, this is a good kind of practice as I imagine the pros have to go out there and do it with all kinds of ailments besetting them), so it did have a little different sound to it; glad it came out okay, I really am! You take care now and thanks for coming by! Michael

Ah, the Poconos
You know Andy, one of my cherished possessions is a reel of film shot by my parents when my brother and I were very young when they visited the Poconos. I still remember a little bit of it myself! Could only have been three at most however! I think I heard about your exploits at the casino. Weren't you the one that lost $50 at the slot machine, so stole about $200 worth of Sweet-N-Low packets to get even? If not, I apologize. Hey, thanks so much for the nice words and hope you and Maureen are doing well. Take care now! Michael

Thanks so very much Mr. 67!
I just adore Ella Fitzgerald and Satchmo is an artist I've loved since age 4 (I really think he was responsible for my love of this style of music if my 4-year-old vocal impression of him was any indicator; my mom thought I'd mess up my voice permanently doing that!) I'm very humbled by such receptive praise--thanks again, and take care now! Michael

I'm
in San Diego so what do I know about the cold?
Well I'm from NYC and I can tell you something about freakin cold winters… but I do know that if I were back in my cold (the boiler's down for a week) apartment this would warm things up real fast.
As usual just terrific my friend.

Ah, the San Diego weather!
After my parents broke up, my mom moved to San Diego and as a child I spent a lot of time visiting there. Honestly and truly, there was something ineluctably delightful about the weather there, at least this is how my memory has retained it--you're lucky! I definitely hear you about the cold--we used to keep a dozen tubes of Ben Gay in store just in case the furnace went out during the winter. Believe me, that would have been a last-ditch resource however! But anything to keep warm! Really delighted, as always, to hear from you Charlie--thanks again! Michael
