Description
Goodbye, Martha is one of the earliest Hemby/Pearson tunes. Jack wrote this around the time I relocated to Greenville after my military thing, and it’s one of my favorites. His songs were always filled with some really nice harmonies, and they still are. He sent me a track of this song with a new version of the keys, and after hanging onto it for a few years, I finally pieced a mix together using it. I intended to use it for this posting, but he wasn’t really happy with it and sent me another, which was even better. I had already sent Scott a mix so he could lay down a beat. Scott had a bit of a challenge as the BPM fluctuated here and there., but he smoothed it out nicely, and provided a stellar track. We knew Neil would be the man to have on bass. His tracks amaze me, and he always knows what’s in our heads. I sent Jack a couple of acoustic guitar tracks, but we had to bring in the big guns for this, and so Vic was generous to send his help. Vic’s style has a flavor that fits perfectly with the music of those years. To capture the harmonies, it was only natural that we look up Roxy. It’s always a joy to sing with Roxy. Jack and I were on vocals, but there was a gap which our lady took care of beautifully. These people’s contributions are what make this song really special, and Jack and I are very grateful. We hope you enjoy what we all have done here. Peace. Terry

And Jack says:

This tune only took 4 decades to complete. It is from Terry and my "Big Green Piano in a Metal Box in the Woods" sessions and I do remember very well the first time Terry and I sat down to work on it. We were thinking ... "If we only had a proper band". We found our band. Terry and I have worked with these folks on several projects. They feel like comfortable shoes now. Back in the day I took the lead and Terry worked on the harmony. As is proper, Terry took over the lead vocals. I want to thank my cat Scout for reminding me to call Roxy to help lift the harmony. As I was trying to hit the high notes Scout several times whacked me on the leg to say "That's NOT right ... call Roxy". I am glad I did. Vic .... you are amazing and very honored to have you on lead guitar with some backing guitar work as well. Neil's bass work is solid and my friend down under ... thank you. Scott... great drums and I must say you are always a treat to work with. My brother Terry .... thanks for keeping this one alive. I love hearing your voice ... reminds me of some magic times.

Lyrics
Goodbye Martha
Goodbye Martha. Don’t cry
When I’m away I won’t forget you
Oh my, look at your eyes
They’re red from the crying you’ve done
And no, I won’t be gone long
And yes, I remember our song
But don’t fret, the time’s not too long
And I love you

Head up, feet on the ground
I’ll still be around any corner
That’s right, turn on the light
Begin to remember I love you
And no, I won’t be gone long
And yes, I remember our song
But don’t fret, the time’s not too long
And I love you

Hmmm
Oddly enough, this feels like a Ween song, if they were serious instead of goofy. That's a compliment by the way.

Great guitars and singing.. sounds incredibly professional. One can definitely feel the amount of work put into it (40 years, apparently).

GoodBye Martha
Well guys, I don't know who Martha is but I do know she really appreciates this song. Awesome song! Love it and love all of you.

Been so long...
...can't remember if Martha was a person or favorite name; Only her hairdresser knows for sure, and that would be Mr. Hemby. Glad you liked it, Jeannie. I think I'll go through more artifacts to see if we have any more of these little jewels. Thanks from all of us for the kind words. T

We were too late, they were already famous. That's the era it came from, and we were careful not to tamper with the oldie feel. These people did a masterful job in it's construction, and knew exactly what page we were on. Thanks for the comments. T

Thank you, Sir Vic
I have to say, almost immediately when this project started I was telling myself, "this is a Vic Holman song." Your guitar was in my head, and Jack, apparently, had the same thought. Love the job you did on this, and I hope we can do more together. Thanks, from all of us. T

Love the bass...
I don't know why I settled there, but I just found it very well played and applied to this song. Vocal harmonies are wonderful, too — that little hint of Roxy's voice it just right. I'm not surprised that the song works so well: you've got great talent handling every aspect of the production. Now, don't take 40 years to produce your next hit single.
