Description
This is a tune made popular by the Ink Spots in 1940 and the second time I've recorded it, although this is a different, lighter arrangement. I was taught some new mic techniques and for this was trying in a couple spots to bring some immediacy to a couple sections, but also got a bit of "white noise" in those parts where I stepped back from the mic. I believe this is due to the output of my mic's preamp being a bit up there, but any ideas you folks have about this anomaly would be very much appreciated! I've received so much excellent advice from many of you in the past, thanks!

I did what I could to reduce this, but even so, this probably will sound best on your speakers (at a distance of 22 feet, wearing swimmer's earplugs. And ear muffs. And holding two Tampons over them. It's a new microphone for me and I've not had an awful lot of recording time with it so still figuring things out! It certainly is a sensitive little sucker, let me tell you!

I had a little fun playing around with a few special effects here (and I finally got to use the world-famous but rarely utilized "telephone" equalizer effect, which I think worked out nicely as it sounded like an electric percolator (whatever THAT's supposed to sound like!)

Thanks again and hope you have a wonderful weekend coming up!

Michael

"Java Jive" was written by Ben Oakland (1938)
Accompaniment: A. McPike (actually, I think this is an underpaid minion of his on this one)

Nice changes!
I like the effects and mixed vocals on this take. I think the mic recording was well done. I prefer MIDI/usb cables myself - in fact I sing MIDI numbers in the shower...but that's just me. Great listening before bed...hope I can sleep!

Thank you so much Michael!
And you mentioned something there that may prove helpful to me, and something I never actually thought about. Before I moved from Minnesota, I never had a really bad "hiss" problem and was using the cable supplied by the makers of the preamp I use (Studio V3). I'm wondering now if the cord I'm using now is from somewhere else (lots of electronic gadgets in this household--I may very well be using something that actually goes into our TV for all I know!) Thanks for mentioning that--I'll have to investigate! Great hearing from you and take good care now, Michael

Java Jive
I used the method you suggested for listening (it took a bit of time to get all the special equipment) and I couldn't hear any of the white noise you mentioned. The main thing I like is the happiness in the song - it has a live feel to it from the main vocal and the effected voices are fun. Nice chords in the backing. Much enjoyed, Michael!

White noise!
You know Philip, I believe I've finally found the reason for my calamity: I've had my headphones plugged into my speakers! When I hooked them up directly from my PC, I couldn't hear as much as of that stuff as previously, very light if at all. I know there's noise on the recording, but perhaps I'm hearing it slightly amplified the way I was doing it previously. Thanks so much for listening and for the kind remarks! Michael

Thanks!
There's not much behind me, but I'm the courageous type (actually, I think I might do better with very little behind me, but with not too much in front of me either!) Appreciated hearing from you Mr. America!

Ha-ha .. I've just listened to back-to-back coffee songs (first Paul Page's "Caffeine" and now yours). I love those kind of Macjams coincidences : )

The subtleties you are asking about are beyond my ken. It all sounds dandy to my ears. Of course I was listening from 38-feet away wearing a football helmet, so perhaps the subtlety loses something under those conditions?

Besides, I spend a fair amount of time trying it inculcate white noise into my productions .. so I'm the wrong person to comment on this topic.

Thanks Warren!
Oh, Paul's composition! Yes, believe it or not, by the time I was ready to slap this thing up, I would have been right on top of Paul! I thought, "Oh, that's probably not a good idea to have this one so close to his", so I waited a little while! I have some surplus white noise if you ever need some! You take care now, Michael

Great stuff, as usual bro
both the caffeine and you, but I nearly wet myself when the coffee started making faces at me. Lovely.

Hahahaha--you know, I modified that weird animated gif I got off the internet so that there would be a slight delay before it started contorting it's face (face?) so that really pleased me that you got a jolt from it! Thanks again Richard, I'm very much obliged! Michael

You know, believe it or not, one of the Ink Spots used to eat at my dad's restaurant all the time when he was appearing at a place across the street, Cha-Cha Hogan. I still have the autographed picture he made out to my dad many years ago. Glad you liked it and thanks so much for the kind remarks! Michael

All this techno talk has
me reaching for the ...er tea mug and the kettle....but the end result is sparkling good....

my missus wants a coffee machine....I mean one of the serious ones ....

machines that is, all wives are serious...

I nearly said okay....then I saw how many beans ....and I don't mean the coffee ....

still , what wifey wants ....etc

Great entertainment Michael.

Like a Maxwell Parachute...
..."Good Till the Last Drop". But all seriousness aside, thanks for the positive review on this thing Chris, I very much appreciate it. Oh man, if you get a coffee machine, stay away from those "Mr. Coffee" models, they are the worst! I like the Hamilton-Beach ones better--less messing around trying to make a pot of coffee. I wonder, however, if your wife made terrible coffee, would that be grounds for divorce? You take good care now and hope to hear you at work soon! Michael

I like the spare arrangement. The first guitar notes recall both "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and a song that Randy Newman wrote for "Three Amigos." The latter is probably verboten, but I'd love to hear your take on the former, assuming it's in the public domain.

Tumbling Tumbleweeds
I'm glad you remember that old song--I was reading about it just a few weeks ago and had no idea it was such a tremendous hit record at the time, it was all over the place! That might be a good one for me to work on--I just wish I had inherited my maternal grandfather's yodeling skills (he was a state champ from what I hear) because that would work well for the song. Glad you liked this one--and thanks so much for letting me know Graham. Take good care now, Michae

Hold the cream and sugar, please.
What a great tune! I didn't hear any audio artifacts or anything like that. I thought the mix was very clean and it didn't sound like it got muddy at any point. This tune is a nice throwback to the good ol' days. I loved your arrangement and the fun play with chords. Very well done! Thanks for sharing!

I am relieved!
So far, the votes are in my favor that there was nothing to worry about here with the noise, so I'm feeling lots better! The arrangement is by Alan McPike and he does excellent work--thanks for noting it! I sometimes have to explain who "Mr. Moto" was, as mentioned in the lyrics. That was a movie detective played in a series of films by Peter Lorre, but what Mr. Moto has to do with coffee, I've never been certain of! Thanks again--and take care now, Michael

It takes a special barista to make a coffee that winks at you. Impressive. As is the song. Your phrasing and enunciation are first rate. The pared back arrangement lets your vocals take absolute centre stage. The hiss you talk about is not particularly evident. Sure it wasn't the coffee pot boiling? :-) Thanks, Peter.

Thanks Peter!
I'm happy my dilemma with the noise apparently is not very noticeable (although through my headphones and the way I had them connected at the time, there was more hissing on this thing than a movie theater full of fan boys watching "Iron Man 3"). I think I've remedied that situation, and again, I may not have solved things without the appreciated input I've received here. I think the "winking coffee" is a trick of Starbuck's--they just drop a Bromo-Seltzer in the cup before serving (I could be wrong!) So happy to have heard from you and thanks for the nice words on this deal! Take good care now, Michael

Thanks Stephen!
My next plan is to try to replicate this arrangement (just for practice of course!) using my new tools in the hopes I can improve my sense of arranging music (it's a spare one so a good one to try). I did have a lot of fun with this and most of the fun came later as I took a lot of time with this and came up with little ideas as they days went by. You're too kind--thanks again! Michael

I think it may be the best "coffee" song ever written; it just "tastes" like coffee perhaps (not the way I make coffee, however; mine tastes like it was strained through a mummy!) Hope you've had your coffee, and it's especially nice to have heard from you, thanks again! Michael

And finally
I'm not forbidden!

Sounds great Michael (even through the ear muffs - do you think it might have been better with the tampons as well?)

The effects worked well and your humour shines through like a beacon.

Time for a another cup I think.

White noise?
I just imagined it was analog artifacts (light scratches) on an old 78 rpm platter.

Nice interpretation of the song, Michael, and a fun listen!

Bit late to the espresso bar...
One of my absolute favorite classics. You do it up with special blend of humor and smooth singing. It's also nice to hear a little simpler backup band than on some of your other classics. The little extra vocal bits ("Waiter, waiter, perculator...") are really fun and you pull them off perfectly. Nice one, Michael. Add it to the juke box list.
