Description
I just wanted to write a new song! One with pretty normal chords, a verse, chorus and bridge, and some octave help on the bassline.

Inspired by a Melbourne band I saw recently ("Saskwatch"), I came up with this RnB (old school) tinged song about politics and stupidity ........ we've had a change (very much for the worse) of government!

Just me on the usual instruments. Hope you enjoy it (and hope MJ stays up long enough!).

Cheers from Oz!

Lyrics
SOME DAYS WILL BE LIKE THAT
©2014 Neil Porter

You got your set glued to A.M.
Get your opinions from the devious boys
They load the words and you spray ‘em
You add your voice to all the negative noise

Ooh ooh
Some days’ll be like that
Ooh ooh
Some days’ll leave you flat

You got no time for reflection
You got no time for all that serious stuff
Your life’s been full of rejection
You do OK but it’s not good enough

Ooh ooh
Some days’ll be like that
Ooh ooh
Some days’ll leave you flat

Won’t you take a good look at yourself?
Couldn’t things be a whole lot better?

SOLO

Ooh ooh
Some days’ll be like that
Ooh ooh
Some days’ll leave you flat

You trash the world as we know it
Taking us backwards at the speed of light
You just don’t think and you show it
The sun is setting on a long dark night

Ooh ooh
Some days’ll be like that
Ooh ooh
Some days’ll leave you flat

Beautifully clean sound, Neil. The B3 over the opening is very good. Drums are snappy, bass supportive. Vocal got inside my head. Great tone on the guitar solo and the style suits the mood. Pointed lyrics. Love it!

Thanks Philip. The holiday break (no child minding, no PBGB) gave me tome to think and create. As much as I enjoy the kids and the Shed, I don't seem to get time to write and record my own stuff, never mind listen and comment on other people's stuff. PBGB can feel like a job at times, although I do enjoy it. The feel of this seems to work for me, and I'm very comfortable with it, so expect more in this vein when I get a chance.
Thanks for listening,
Neil

Sweet
Hey Neil- I really like the progression of this and the bass line is very cool and drives the song well.

Well crafted song with interesting lyrics. In my head I was hearing some bg vox during the Ooh Ooh sections... so as awesome as this is it might be even awesomer (a new word) with some vocals in the BG.

Thanks Adam
For me, the bass line is one of the most important aspects of any song to get right. If it doesn't work, then the whole song won't work. But then as a bassist, I'm going to say that aren't I?!
I had a few runs at backing vox in the chorus, but it seemed to take away the simplicity and intimacy that I was aiming for.
Thanks for listening and taking time to comment.
Cheers,
N

Great tune Neil! I love R&B ... has all the old school chords with a twist and the cool catchy riff works nice with the organ. Well written, nice bridge ... drums sound live ... nice clean tele solo and the mix is perfect to my ears. I like how you've let this breath by keeping it simple.

Simple is good! I had a full horn section on the second half of this at one point, but it just took over the whole sound, and as the samples weren't all that brilliant, I decided to drop them.
We do have a PBGB tune coming up in the next few weeks with horn section and girlie chorus though, and it's sounding pretty neat at this stage. Just waiting for some final percussion tweaks and mastering.
Thanks for the kind words.

Tack Johannes!
I can't complain too much about my personal world - life is good - but our new government seems intent in putting money and big business ahead of everything else.
Enough of that. I'm pleased that you enjoyed this Johannes. I definitely enjoyed getting a new song together.
Hälsningar för 2014!

I agree re the change of government, Neil. Christopher Pyne, Scott Morrison, and the list goes on... The stuff of nightmares. Great vibe with real punch in the mix. A protest rock song par excellence. Talk soon. Thanks, Peter.

They're all beyond belief, but I have developed a soft spot for Sharman Stone today, and for the Qld Nationals senator who spoke out on the ABC. I've been wondering how long it was going to be before some of the decent people in the coalition (and I'm sure there are a few) decided things were out of hand.
Good news is that I suspect there'll be lots of scope for protest songs over the next 3 years!
Cheers,

Neil, you nailed this! Very interesting and cool verse riff synced up; love that half step move back into the verse from the chorus, very cool. Sounds really tight and clean, and I love that you kept it simple. That organ is the unsung star in this gem....Props!

Nice and easy
Thoughtful lyrics, good playing, and a nice, clean mix. I am glad you found the time to put this together. I am not sure what PBGB is, but it can't be all that good.

Glad you liked it. PBGB is a musical co-op/studio/band I'm involved in. It's a lot of fun most of the time, but can be a bit of a time-sponge.

Love that voice, Neil!
You have a very unique style that adds "cool" to every song. This is a great tune, and a great performance. There's gettin' down, and then there's gettin' down under. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Cool
I agree with Philip and really like both the lyrics, vocals and musical execution. Solid songwriting, very good production and, boy - don't we all feel like that. The older I get the more I appreciate a sense of community, beyond opinions and bold statements, when you put effort into finding things you may have in common rather than the opposite - what do they call it... 'politics'! :)

Sorry to hear about your government, but as long as there are talented people with a good heart like yourself, I'm sure your or any country will be fine!

You have a way when you sing and of course the solid bass and drums like the changes in this , seems like the whole world is being taken over by mad men bent on ruining everything for some cash
were are they gonna spend it when the earth is gone

I think the production on this number shows how far your studio skills have come from your earlier material. Your musicianship has always been super, but this is just so crisp and open sounding. I would compare the sound of this to your production of "Take All Night" from a few years ago. Very impressive.

I forgot...
...the LEGENDARY jiguma "impact mastering"... went straight to this from the forum post of the Bay City Rollers, and just about flattened my ears to the opposite wall...

Despite the skillful use of compression, this sounds really natural, Neil, and I absolutely love the mix. I think this may be the first time I've listened to a MacJams song for the first time on my little Equators, and I think this sounds PERFECTLY mixed...I like the sense of space imparted by that very live tambourine... There's not only a sense of left to right space in the soundstage but also a sense of front-to-back...

I think you did a nice job on the vocal, one of if not your best...I like the sound of your voice and the way you're phrasing on this... You sound up front and in the groove of the tune...

I also think this is one of your best songs, as well. It's tightly written lyrically and has a good melody, and again, plenty of space. It doesn't feel jam packed but rather like you're taking your time and letting the song tell its own story pretty organically...

The drums sound great. The B3 sounds great. The Telecaster sounds great.

All good...

The current government in their short time in power has created so much negativity, it is terrifying to know what is around the corner, they seem to be able to get away in keeping secrets, and seem to thrive in bringing Australia to its knees.

Quality work here Neil, much enjoyed and your mix is superb! I see you are using Ozone, are you tinkering with the presets in anyway as this is crystal clear.

Yes, very scary - makes me almost nostalgic for the Man Of Steel years!

I'm using old versions of Ozone and Logic - and have been for 5 or 6 years now, so I've developed a few presets of my own. This song is the first where I've "mastered" a final bounced aif rather than "mastered" on the output track of the song project. I'd always thought it would make little difference, but I'm very pleased the way the sound on this turned out. It makes a significant difference.
Because I've been mixing and mastering recordings of some very capable and experienced musicians over the lasy few years, I've been really keen to do the best I can for them, and so I've spent a lot of time researching and experimenting to get the sound as good as I can.
Ozone is an absolutely essential tool for me - I wouldn't be able to get anywhere near the sound I get without it. It comes with some great presets, and with a bit of work, is pretty easy to get your head around. I highly recommend it!
Cheers from the near north.

Hi Neil - sorry to be so late getting to this, I'm just woefully behind in my listening at MJ. Glad to rectify that at least here with this terrific song! Has MJ managed to stay online since this was posted? I sure hope so - it deserves lots of listens and comments - your stuff is always top notch.
