A Man in Black (There's more to Life) with SIGMUND and PHILIP18

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Franciscus Henri in collaboration with Philip18 and Sigmund.

This one began as an experiment. Phil and I set up two microphones
The first was into a sound system with two fold back speakers about 2 meters behind me. The second was directly next to the first and we recorded my vocal, guitar and harmonica in one take. We were going for a ‘live sound’ You be the judge.
Phil was inspired to send the track to Sigmund who added drums, bass and some brilliant guitar. What started as a “funny “ line …”The devils in the lyrics…”
Has turned into a song I’m more than happy to share.

Lyrics
There’s More To Life (A Man in Black)
Words nd Music Franciscus Henri (Albert Music)

A man in black played his guitar there was blood on every string
A dead man hanging from a tree Said “I’ve nothing left to sing”
His eyes were blind. His voice was mute but I could hear his song
There’s more to life than singing and you, singing along.
I saw a man stand by the road with out a place to go
And if his suitcase were empty you would never know
In his hand he had a gun to protect him from his friend
There’s more to life than good intentions
When a friendship ends

I have seen the hungry give succour to the rich
I have seen a thirsty man drowning in a ditch
He cried out for a reason but never heard a sound
There more to life than answers when the questions can’t be found
A man in the electric chair said I’m afraid I’m lost
Someone mentioned Jesus and that he died upon a cross
There’s no love in executions or driving nails through hands
There’s more to life than being born
and waiting till it ends

I have walked along the sand by the ocean tide
I have seen a ship sink I have seen a sailor die
I admit that I thought I’m glad I’m not the one
There’s more to life than sympathy and what I might have done
I have heard the people cry One day we will be free
There is a price for freedom and its paid by you and me
Your guilty till you’re innocent there’s a lock on every cell
There’s more to life than freedom
and the Liberty bell

The devil is in the Lyrics and the detail in the song
If the song is short and narrow than the destinations wrong
Nothing is as simple as a song makes out to be
There is more to life than loving you and you loving me.

Lovely work!
A comedy song?

However this started it's finished on another level.

Has the feel of a song that's been with us for decades and that's not easy to achieve.

Lovely guitar work and thoughtful lyrics.

Cheers

Dick

thanks Dick
Strangely enough the song wrote itself while I was pulling tiles off a wall.
As was once said in Faulty Towers "There's enough there for a weekend seminar"
Thanks again for calling in

A Man in Black
High quality ballad lyrics, Franc. Your singing on this is very, very good. Nice light and shade, and emotion. The melody doesn't lose interest through the verses and Sig's various contributions have really lifted the post to another level. His guitar work is compelling but doesn't take away from the story and the singer. Tasty! A really fine post. Thanks, Peter.

Thanks Peter
I'm pleased with your assessment . At one stage I thought the song might be far too long but somehow it was comfortable to sing . I agree with you that Sigmund put a magic touch on it.

There's more to Life
Thank you Franciscus - and Philip, for asking me to be a part of this song, and also for indulging me on all of my production ideas. I really love how this came out - I get a real kick out of the lyrics and the melody is as infectious as any I've ever played on. I think Dick is right - this song just feels like it's a standard that's been around for years - it's comfortable and memorable, and it was a lot of fun to play on - thanks again!

Oh yeah...
Right out of the gate! Classic sound, lyrics and vocal. Love the guitars... harmonic pleasure. And, dang, your vocal, and did I mention the reflective lyrics? Draws me right in. As I said, classic.

Some very nice
sounds...given the title and the lyrics and the type of songs that he sang this could almost be a song about Johnny Cash....that's how it sings to me anyway....cool

Except for "A Man in Black" ...
I would suggest removing the reference to, specifically, “A Man in Black,” because, in my mind as well as everybody else’s (including, if it came to that, maybe some lawyers?), that is a specific reference to:   “John R. Cash, deceased.”   Which is not what you are trying to do with this song ... which is a hundred miles short of “what you are trying to do with this [outstanding ...!] song.

So, I would frankly suggest that you remove the reference, both from the first line and from the title.   To Man in Black®, and to a guitar-player who could also be assumed to be “John.”   It puts the song on altogether the wrong expected-setting.

Thanks for the reflection on the lyrics
As for lawyers, some of my best friends are.....
I have always tried to avoid narrative in my lyrics
images merge and often are, when I look back on a song, unrelated and contradictory.I try to conjure a nuance that the listener interprets.
The song started backwards with the ,"The devils in the lyrics and the details in the song" why? ..that's how it happens. As for the man in black..in the back of my mind I realized the possible "icon"
however in Australia it doesn't carry much weight. If there is any reference to anyone I would concede to Nick Cave or if I were to be poetic after the fact,it's Death.
all Characters and events are fictional (except for seeing a yacht sink on which a person died)and a personal belief that corporal punishment is insane and 'nothing is as simple as a song makes out to be"
But thanks for your thoughts, they are very much appreciated.

Folky goodness. tasty lyrics and vocal execution. Guitar work is splendid! I have had the pleasure of working with both Sig and Philip and i know the quality that they bring to the table. Excellent musicians and good friends; who could ask for more. Nice tune, Franciscus.
