Bruce Banner (Human Nature)

Description
If you’re talking about comics, you have to at some point address the Hulk. Which is really two stories - the consequences of human overreach (Prometheus) and the Beast Inside (insert favorite Monster here). So Bruce Banner is raised by an abusive, impossible to please father. Like everyone raised by that guy he moves into adulthood determined to please him. Which leads to career overreach. Which leads to Bruce being bombarded by gamma rays. Which leads to the Hulk, the physical representation of Bruce’s internalized trauma. I don’t know if Hulk creators Lee and Kirby thought much beyond this point.

I like questions, and I mistrust answers. That’s why I like the Hulk. He’s never tamed, he’s never put back in the bottle, he’s guessed at but never figured out. In time, Banner is able to control the impulse, summoning the Hulk when needed and suppressing it when he’s at the dentist or on the subway, but he never knows what the Hulk is, other than he’s always there, lurking under the skin. And of course the Hulk is in all of us. Not violence, or human nature, or anything simple as that, but rather PHYSICS, the universe, packed up in bit of our atomic structure, emerging every day to do the unimaginable violence that physics does every second of every day. We’re oblivious of course. We’re like Bruce Banner waking up with torn pants and a headache in a swamp on a Tuesday. We don’t remember it, we don’t see it, we don’t register it, but it happens nevertheless. The world beyond our senses is LARGE and STRANGE. So when I think about the Hulk, I’m thinking about that.

Lyrically, I’m really pleased with this. It’s basically my world view in a song. I don’t know if anyone else has put a philosophical treatise in a pop song. Someone probably has.

Musically, I wanted it to have a sterile feel, like a high tech lab, with little bits of nature pushing at the walls. And then by happy accident I started the song with my Strat, but then Santa brought me an Epi Les Paul, so I finished with the LP, which really mimes the ‘Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk’ thing. Because of course Bruce Banner would be a Strat man and the Hulk would totally play a Les paul.

Artwork is Bob's, of course. He's my personal artist. I bet you wish you had one.

Anyway I had a lot of fun with these comic book songs. They pushed me and I ended up in places I’d never been artistically, which is cool.

Lyrics
Grow up with a monster and
no matter how you hate you
find yourself at some point
trying to imitate it your indentured
to the things that take the most our of your hide
until the day you die

Sooner or later
we’re all cartoons
caricatures of ourselves with text balloons
comics that nobody’s reading
cause the words are all competing
till the issue when you die

Human nature, is natural
is natural
as breathing
And the skeletons
that your keeping
will come creeping
will come creeping

(oh the bird and the rock and the chain
every day every day it’s the same)

A lion is born
with the aspirations of a hummingbird
dulls his teeth on masticated truth
and doughy words
pretending that the truth is
comprehending the truth
until the day he dies

We while away the time
by foisting wonder on the world
burying the function
in self aggrandizing form
replacing the marvel that is
with a forgettable conceit
until the day we die

Nice track...
Well recorded cool dynamic and voices...
Mix a bit dry in spots, but that's best in this case
because this could be played on any high ranking
system...and they all add colour to the sound mostly
in the bottom end...
Over all it's real cool...

Dry
I hear you about the mix. Most systems these days add so much bass that a treble-y mix sounds great. I always revisit a song after it's on MJ a while, and address any mix issues. So thanks for the input man, appreciate the listen.

everything's gone green
Very interesting thesis on the Hulk.
Did you major in it at Uni :-)
The cold lab, clinical feel comes across well in the construction and layout.
And I like the little touches like the slight guitar coming though.
( What the hell's a hillbilly start?)
A touch of the 5extraarms in this song beyond the great artwork.
Great track
cheers

Uni
If I could have majored in comic books I would have. A hillbilly strat is a cheap-o Squire with pickups that cost more than the guitar :)

Great tune. So much coolness in the arrangement. Love the synths, guitars, and really great vocal parts.

Hulk a Les Paul guy? Never gave it much thought.

I thought Bob was my personal artist!!

Way too cool, Craig! I really like the mood you establish in this. The understated vocal is just great and the layered chorus is so creative. The Hulk probably goes through quite a few guitars... Thanks, Peter.

This is excellent ... love the beat ... hints of 80's which is cool in my books. Great vocals and words ... synth and beats are pretty cool but I love when the guitars come in. Well done man!

great track!! kind of like new order jamming with the beach boys at times, cool approach.
sonically, the mix sounds really good.
I like the philosophizing too. some influence of Eastern wisdom in there? Or am I just reading too many buddha-books? anyway, A lot to chew on and I look forward to listening again.
hearty applause!
