Description
I found some tiny jade pebbles on a fine-rock beach the other day. I stole a few and put them into a box. I think I will save them forever to remind me of that day on the beach. The music is an improvisation, so there's no written score this time.

Amazing
What do you think you will feel when you look at them, say 3 years from now? Did they leave their beauty on the beach along with Sunshine, winds and waves? I know this song will continue to have all of those and more. Simply wonderful. Peace.

i love
KC's description of "liquid". the perfect analogy to me. also curious, like mystrag, of what the pebbles would evoke some time later...a special day, a feeling of peace, some moment of epiphany?

Improvisational brilliance, Paul. Liquid is so apt a description. Smooth and soothing with the occasional subtle swell. So good. Thanks, Peter.

i believe you borrowed the pebbles
they will outlast us all and find their way to someone else. that they inspired this beautiful piece is their gift to us all today. I think you might really enjoy the documentary Rivers and Tides about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. Check it out if you get the time - it has a wonderful score by one of my favorite musicians - Fred Frith.

Enjoyed your performance. Harmonies are simpler when you improvise, but sound is lighter and freer. Cheers.

A Walk In The Park?
So this sort of beautiful improvised melody is just a walk in the park — or, in this case, a stroll along the beach — for you, Paul? I both admire and envy your talent.

Listening to this piece, I can almost smell the ocean and see the manipulated *lives* of those pebbles, as they are moved by the surf. This Jade highly polished by a master's ivory tools. ;)

A Gem
I love how you start out with this quasi-eastern feel. It's almost like listening to a westernized koto melody and then within 2 minutes we are into a romantic rhapsodic flow without ever quite realizing the graceful evolution that brought us there. There is such delicacy, not just in the piano - which is stunning in the restraint at 1:18 that draws in our attention - but with the interplay of the understated flute as melodic dance partner. Your denouement is sublime and leads to that feeling of total satisfaction at the end where a pause is demanded as we reflect on the experience that has gone before.

I would have been fine with all of the virtuosity you've displayed for our enjoyment but to then learn that you improvised this piece it makes my head feel like exploding. I guess that's the display of genius and we are all the better for it.

Many thanks for allowing downloads. Be well Paul!

As good as ever...
I put all of your allowable downloads into my iTunes. I listen often while I work and sometimes the stress of work and life is happening and suddenly a Paul Page piano piece pops up and washes all the stress away. I mean even Caffeine does this! It is something about your style. Doesn't matter fast nor slow. It just works. Thanks!

You have such mastery of the keys - which allows you to focus on the art - the feel - the lightest touch and its impact on me, the listener. So well played, and you make it sound so effortless, like any of us could do it, which helps make this piece, like many of your works, inspiring! Thank you for that inspiration, and for the wonderful listen!

So this is what you hear when Paul Page thinks out loud. I think I'd like to just follow you around some day and eavesdrop. This is really nice, Paul!

In Japanese culture...
...there are any number of "ways" in which artists work: they may learn painting, calligraphy, flower arranging, tea ceremony, dance...They learn very precise and exacting ways to do each movement, to make each brush stroke, to whisk the tea. It is sometimes misunderstood that they are aspiring to a stiff exactitude, with no variation.

On the contrary, they are learning precise discipline precisely so that any move they make will flow from that discipline and appear effortless and unthinkingly perfect, flowing from the artist's or master's 'practice' without the involvement of the ego mind.

One of the reasons that I so enjoy and appreciate what you do, Paul, is that I always have the impression that years and years and years of exacting practice and study has gone into preparing you to be able to play freely and from the heart.

This piece is an excellent encapsulation of that. As others have said, it has a quality of effortless flow to it, but flow that betrays a very prepared mind and spirit behind it. It is simple, and beautiful, and uplifting.
