The Barbara-B with Sasja Antheunis and Phil18

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This sung was written about a boat (much like in the picture) that we would travel on across the Gippsland lakes in southeastern Victoria - Australia
My daughter Sasja sings the harmonies.
We used to sing this when she was a girl.
We recorded this in a nostalgic moment two weeks ago while she was visiting Melbourne. She has a music career (well beyond Garage Band) in Tokyo.
I suggest you Google “Sasja Antheunis” for more.
Phil 18 does the guitars and Bass
And I do some Keyboard.

Lyrics
The Barbara- B w&m Franciscus Henri (Albert Music)

I’m heading ‘cross the lakes on Friday morning
There’s a mist rolling’ in from the sea
Ocean liners heading ‘cross the ocean
Yachts unfurl their sails to catch the breeze
And the diesel engine sings a song, words I’ve never sung
Something ’bout a feeling to be free
I’ve got a dream that’s just mine, the diesel engines keeping time
Crossing the lakes on the Barbara B

A south wind blows across the Campbell’s’ channel
We’re heading on course that well she knows
Of wind and rain she could tell some stories
The old lady seems to know her own way home.
And the diesel engine sings a song , words I’ve never sung
Something ’bout a feeling to be free
I’ve got a dream that’s just mine, the diesel engines keeping time
Crossing the lakes on the Barbara B

Across the ocean, across the seven seas
I never found a place that I’d call home
Passing by Sperm-whale head on the Barbara B
I found a destination all my own

I’m heading ‘cross the lakes on Friday morning
There’s a mist rolling’ in from the sea
Ocean liners heading ‘cross the ocean
Yachts unfurl their sails to catch the breeze
And the diesel engine sings a song, words I’ve never sung
Something ’bout a feeling to be free
I’ve got a dream that’s just mine, the diesel engines keeping time
Crossing the lakes on the Barbara B
Just her and me

The Barbara B
Classic composition, great melding of voices. Franciscus, you have such a great delivery and your beautiful daughter Sasja is simply perfect in her part. (I did google Sasja, and wow, what a pro!). Philip did a nice job here, keeping it simple, and letting the story take front and center. Excellent!

Its a true story
and the fact that Sasja and I would sing it when she was a young girl on the lakes in that boat made the belated recording of the song a special project. And ..hey who's proud of his daughter?

We don't hear enough of this kind of folk
Yes things have moved along in the music world, and yet there is something to be said for a song that tells a story with male and female leads and straightforward backing. The vocals and performances are very good and yet the thing that strikes me with this track is the wonderful balance you've achieved when you sing with your daughter. It's like you each knew the other's timing and nuances intimately and it come out beautifully. You must be a very proud father!

I agree about the world moving on ..at what speed and cost.
I dragged out this decades old song and I'm glad we brought a bit of mellow to the world.

Precious
This took me back to my (very) old coffee house days — a very pleasant trip for me. :) This a joy to my ears, just good, clean, musical fun done very well, indeed.

Although understandable (from one proud Dad to another), it seemed you gave a little more *oomph* to Sasja's vocals in the early part of the song. Later on, I think a closer balance reveals the beautiful blend of your voices.

This really is just lovely, Franc. ;)

Beautiful tune
Some fantastic harmonizing and I suspect that you and your daughter have done this many times before. Enjoyed the mix as well and I like the way you have all the parts split up in the mix.

The Barbara-B
Sorry for being late, Franc. I have been travelling in Tasmania with friends for a bit over two weeks and am just back. And what a welcome home. This is such a wonderful folk song. You and Sasja sound so natural together. It really it classic folk. Fine song, wonderfully sung. Philip's backer has the simplicity to let the song breathe and shine. I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for the download. Regards, Peter.

Classic
I love the sense of tradition in this. Authentic and true. Reminds me of when I lived on an Indian reservation in the late 70s and every Saturday night a bunch of us white immigrants would get together and sing traditional songs near an old Ben Franklin stove. I'd play an out of tune upright, but it was perfect. I hope this music never dies. Thanks for helping to keep it living.

Duet
There's more than just a hint of nostalgia in this sweet father-daughter duet for a past that is gone and not coming back. The song keeps the memory alive .. and that's a beautiful thing.

I like that line "the diesel engines keeping time." It's as if the boat were alive and handling the percussion.

So much to like...
The story is in a sort-of traditional narrative mode, but the poetry is so appealing and natural that this is a unique creation in and of itself. I really love the general presentation, too: the vocals are so pleasant and the mix of your two voices lies so nicely within the vocal range of the song; the single guitar backing is perfect — not overwhelming the listener with extraneous instrumentation...you've got just enough here so be totally satisfying; the solo guitar bridge combined with Sasja's vocalization provides a wonderful respite from the rest and is so delicately appealing. I just love this little song. It is comfortable and tells a great story sincerely and without pretense. About as good as song writing gets.

I'm late to the party here...
Never the less you guys sound great and she has a
wonderful voice....
You've put this together in a very cool way, that
Gordon Lightfoot.. sound indicative of the 60's & 70's
that still works today, very relaxing and a pleasure to the ear....

Well Done by you all....
