Description
When we started out on the Distant England project it was Graeme's view of the UK from a distance but the more we do the more we realise it's not as simple as that.

This is about change. How societies change, how we change, how our perceptions change. There are a number of models of change but the one I'm thinking of is where we don't want the change. We recognise it, get angry, reject it, and develop strategies to deal with it and then sometimes we even accept it.

The song Distant England recognises things have changed but rails against the changes and ss the first of the songs in the cycle. This song, As Harrison Said, is about finding some peace and understanding that change is inevitable. It will be the final song when the others are completed (and there are others).

Graeme put down some vocals when he was staying with me last year. This was one of them. No click track or tuning note so I had to work the arrangement around his phrasing and his tuning.

Lyrics
As Harrison Said © 2014 Graeme Hobbs

Do you come from the depths of King Solomon's mines?
Were you lost for a while in the fog on the Tyne?
Did you walk on the beach along the sea shore
As a clarinet played a familiar score?

But it's gone now, lost in the past
As Harrison said, all things must pass
As each generation seizes its day
The previous one bows and just slips away

Did you come from the age of the monochrome screen
When little Joe Cartwright was every girl's dream?
Did you swing to the chimes of the bell of Big Ben?
Were you pleased as punch with your Crackerjack pen?

But it's gone now, lost in the past
As Harrison said, all things must pass
As each generation seizes its day
The previous one bows and just slips away

Wish I had the words!
Please post the lyrics. I desperately want to read them.

Strikes me as a simple narrative that is presented without fanfare or the distractions of a big arrangement. I really like the subtle orchestration (and those little bell drops at cadences, especially) and the uncomplicated way the narrator tells this story. My one nit is the occasional just-off-the-mark vocal pitch. If you redo this track and get that right on the money, the song will be a wonderful start to the series. And, I might add, what a great way to tell the story of a changing society/culture. Take your time. This is/could be a most-valuable look into the state of the state.

Thanks Paul!
I've now added the lyrics.

Many thanks for your considered comments. Time will certainly be taken. 2 years in and we have 4 songs!

It was indeed a simple narrative and I tried to keep the backing understated so it didn't get in the way of the vocal or distract from it. A one take vocal from Graeme with no chance to redo it. There are a few glitches and although I guess I could have tried pitch correction I'm not keen on such things and thought the vocal should stay as it is.

Thanks again.

Cheers

A wistful, understated vignette, Dick. You worked things in well round Graeme's natural vocals. A very worthy project - keep going. Let's see, 2020 is the expected album release, right? :-) Thanks, Peter.

2020? :-)
Actually that's about right. It's taken us nearly 10 years for the previous "operas"!

Thanks for the listen and comments Peter. I'm sure Graeme will think he could have done it better but with the limited amount of time we had I'm pleased it worked out.

A piece of each generation will be passed on. A little piece maybe. And not the piece we want to remember, those pieces are passing as we speak. Very stirring lyrics. Bravo!

Take Your Place...
... on The Great Mandella. As each soul passes, we who remain move up a step in line toward our own final destinies — whatever they may be. What have we done? What have we accomplished that may have left our mark and made Life better for those who follow?

What an ambitious and thoughtful series this has been. Heady stuff, indeed. It's reassuring to know there are still people in our world who care about the crux, rather than just the crust, of our existence.

Splendid work, Dick and Graeme. ;)

Strong vocal that gives the words power. The orchestration captures the nostalgic feel without overriding the vocal. It certainly has a "this is the introduction to a longer piece" feel to it, suggesting lots of stories to be told. So far, so good!

Short and sweet - very interesting orchestration - the way you put this together reminds me of the band "They Might Be Giants". I like that abrupt stop in the music - kinda feels like you're standing at the top of the stairs, at that point of balance where you could go either way. Anyway, such a cool 88 seconds! Enjoyed, Dick - thanks!

Sounds great Dick
The first thing I notice is the big sound. Then the simplicity of the tune and the power of the lyrics. I usually hate the current use of the term "evocative" as a standalone, so I'll use the more familiar "evocative of" - this was so evocative of my younger days - I'm guessing we're about the same age (isn).
A really good post Dick and Graeme - enjoyable and memorable.

I think that's probably about right!

Thanks for the listen and comments Neil!

I always
love your social commentaries in songs and this is no exception....I wish it had just a couple more verses with a big 'stately' instrumental build up and fade; the backing music hints at that....just saying. Nevertheless i enjoyed it very much and those chorus lines "As each generation seizes its day .......The previous one bows and just slips away..." are wonderfully true...Loved it Dick, regards M

I've long been a fan of your work with Graeme
and this song just reinforces my already held view that you two make for a collaborative fountain of profound creative works. The message here is simple, but you have stated it in a way that overcomes our desire to pigeonhole it with an 'oh, right, I knew that' kind of response. Keeping the vocal bare and honest carries the message through any of our preconceptions and your backing was perfect - understated, flowing with the meter of the vocal (talk about adapting to even small changes!) and with a hint of nostalgia and yet realisation of the facts presented by reality.

Or I could just say "Well my lad, a right fine tune that was!".

Cheers guys. And thanks for the dlownload.

you are one of the finest song writers i know! and i love the arrangements, they are lush, and full of ideas.

you also must know, i am VERY comfortable with getting your idea across and being done with it. and you do that brilliantly, in just a minute and a half, which is about all the ideas that most 4 minutes songs have if they are LUCKY!!!
