Description
This is NOT an Aphrodisiac song. It was not written by anyone in Aphrodisiac, and it was not performed by any Aphrodisiac line-up. This was done by another band I was in (years later) called "Revelation." We billed ourselves as "A spiritually inspired rock music project. The plan was to write and perform faith-based originals (in churches, etc) with a rock edge. And since we were all fans of heavy music, we regularly went over that edge.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first and only song we ever recorded. It was done so early on that we hadn't even found all the band members yet and I had to play both drums and bass on the recording.

I don't recall exactly how many gigs we actually played but there weren't many. (there was a lot of cross-pollenation among members because we were all in other bands both separately and together.) But I do recall one gig the lead singer talked us into playing with a hired gun lead guitarist (again, the band was not complete) where we pretty much played to an empty church. Which would have been okay with me, except for the fact that the lead guitarist we hired was someone I was trying to recruit for another band, and knew this experience would leave a sour taste in his mouth. And just as I predicted, we never heard from him again.

Nevertheless, we didn't spend a lot of time recording but we rehearsed quite a bit. And played a lot of house party type gigs. Which really made no sense considering the message in our music.

I'm posting this song because I think it's pretty well-written and performed (despite my horrible one-take bass line), and because today is the perfect day of the year to post it.

Revelation is...

Lyrics
Black Friday
Music and Lyrics by Ralph Johnson and Fred Ball.

There is a man, who we love so dear
He died to save our souls
He died so you and me, could live forever
And be made whole
He died on a day, the sun refused to shine
To save a wretch like me
He died in a place, on a hill they call skull
On top of Calvary

And we call it Black Friday
The day your son saved the world
Lord we call it Black Friday
The day your son save the world

For those of you, who don’t know the story
Let me say a word
How Jesus, God’s only begotten son
He came to save this world
He was born in a manger, in Bethlehem
Far across the sea
When the three wise men, on that journey that night – saw the bright star
And they knew it was he that could save the world

And we call it Black Friday
The day your son saved the world
Lord we call it Black Friday
The day your son save the world

The sky turned black as the night, and the earth shook with God’s holy might
The day he died on Calvary
And he died on a cross, yes he paid the cost
To help set men free, and all he did was
He healed the sick, and he raised the dead
And he opened blind eyes that they might see
But a world so mean, so bitter and cruel
Killed him on Calvary

And we call it Black Friday
The day your son saved the world
And we call it Black Friday
The day your son save the world

It was a Black Friday, the sun refused to shine, it was a Black Friday
It was a Black Friday, he died to save my soul, it was a Black Friday
It was a Black Friday, he died for you and me, it was a Black Friday
It was a Black Friday, he died on Calvary, it was a Black Friday
Father we thank you for what you’ve done, you gave your only son
Lord we love you, yes we do.

fascinating juxtaposition between music and lyrics. i really like the style of this but keep getting pulled back by the lyrics thinking, "what the hell?". anyway, the description is hilarious. all the parts come together and i especially dig ralph's vocal. thanks for posting!

Has a pop feel to it until the break. Especially like the guitar and the vocals are outstanding. Thanks for sharing.

These are songs from a rock-metal-funk band I started many years ago called Aphrodisiac. We were very talented, could draw a crowd, had a little buzz about us, and were beginning to get noticed by the right people. Naturally it all went to hell... [see more]
