The Black Guitar

Description
I wrote this song a few months ago, in part after hearing Franciscus Henri’s fine post, A Man in Black.

As is often the case, it is an unedited, “live” recording using a Shure Beta58a and my self-made 000.

Longish, and possibly a bit indulgent, but I like singing it and I do indeed “get lost out on a song”.

So there! ☺

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
The Black Guitar - Peter Bowen (February 2014) CAPO II

[Fmaj7] [G] [Am]

The [Am] man in black, [G] with tattoos on his arms
[Fmaj7] Mouths a cigarette from a [Am] pack
He is [Am] tall and gaunt, and he’s [G] carrying a guitar
[Fmaj7] Battered gig bag on his [Am] back

[G] He is wandering through a life [Am] alone
[G] Chased by shadows from his [Am] past
[G] People step around him [Am] on the street
[Fmaj7] No chance he’s ever been [E] miscast

He claims his corner and tunes a black guitar
But his mind is far away
His eyes glaze over; yellowed fingers find the strings
And he begins to play

His plaintive voice cuts through the night
Indifferent to the throng
His body’s swaying back and forth
He’s lost out on a song

[F] Memories from a [C] better time, [Em] come visit in his [F] head
[F] Kaleidoscopic [C] coloured dreams, and [Dmadd9/A] feelings long since [E] dead
[F] A fragile smile, a [C] warm embrace, deep [Em] passion in the [F] night
[F] But all too soon the colours [C] coalesce, and [G/B] give way to black and [Am] white

Guitar (verse one chords)

His plaintive voice cuts through the night
Indifferent to the throng
His body’s swaying back and forth
He’s lost out on a song

[F] Memories from a [C] better time, [Em] come visit in his [F] head
[F] Kaleidoscopic [C] coloured dreams, and [Dmadd9/A] feelings long since [E] dead
[F] A fragile smile, a [C] warm embrace, deep [Em] passion in the [F] night
[F] But all too soon the colours [C] coalesce, and [G/B] give way to black and [Am] white
[G] Yeah, they fade to black and [Am] white
[G] And he’s too weak for the [Am] fight
So he [G] fades into the [Am] night

Autobiography?
Such an intimate song and vocal performance all demands immediate attention. Such a song is timeless because it is even more than a narrative: it is a description of a life, pure and simple...black and white. Your guitar itself sounds just wonderful and rich, Peter, and your playing is so certain and refined. This is just beautiful!

Lucky
Not autobiographical, Paul, thank my lucky stars. I have a wonderful very long term partner and two fantastic kids who have grown up to be fine young adults. More a lament for those people less fortunate than I. Glad you liked it. It was a bit of a journey. Take care, Peter.

The Black Guitar
Beautifully crisp guitar and stylish playing. Warm vocal that does indeed get inside the lyrics. Compelling narrative in the story - fine work, my friend!

Familiar
Thanks, Philip. I was pretty happy with the way this turned out in the end, even though it is quite long. I have been singing it for a month or so now, so it has bedded down a bit and become more comfortable to sing. The Beta58a seemed to go okay. Talk soon, Peter.

Go figure
The first 10 seconds is the best bit, Neil :-) I have been getting a few "Plugin Failure" messages with particular songs, too, but this one plays fine for me. Go figure. Talk soon, Peter.

The Black Guitar
So simple and so clear. I love the directness of this. The SM58 or was it your self-made mic (?) makes this a pretty incredible recording. Sensitive picking, plaintive yet confident. You voice sounds really good, but I would have pulled the volume back just a hair, but as a guitarist I'm always wanting to put there guitar more up front. A nit at best. The vibrato in your voice is sweet. Thanks for this track…

Luthier school is in...
Thanks RR. The mic was a Shure Beta58a, the slightly upmarket cousin of the SM58. The guitar I was using was a self-made 000 size acoustic. I made it at a luthier school here in Melbourne. All Australian tone woods - it turned out just great. It is a fantastic guitar to noodle with and develop songs on. I fitted it with an L.R. Baggs Lyric p/u, which also sounds great. I appreciate your listen and constructive criticism. Take care, Peter.

I really like your style of guitar playing and wish I could play like that. Your lyrics do a great job of painting a picture (Kaleidoscopic coloured dreams . . .). Much enjoyed!

Noodling...
Glad you thought this one turned out OK, J. My guitar technique is really just built on hammer ons/pull offs and, through experience, being selective about the strings I play with my right hand. Just keep noodling and it will come. Thanks, Peter.

Hi Peter......
This is such a beautiful song. Gritty guitar accompaniment to lyrics sung so richly.

I had to d/l to listen to this as the plugin misbehaved. No worries. I was d/ling anyway.

Take care.

The Black Guitar
You're just turning out these wonderful acoustic tunes ... love the simplistic purity of just the guitar and vocals played live. The guitar sounds great! Your words are sung with confidence and feeling. Reminiscent of some of the great folk singers. Another winner.

Walking a (fine) line...
Thanks, Vic. I don't know all that much about Johnny Cash's life, I will have to do some research. The song is more your generic "man in black" troubled life number :-) Glad you liked it. Regards, Peter.

Intimate singer/songwriter mode
Thanks, Ricky. I was pretty happy with the way this recorded and came across. I find myself slipping into intimate, solo singer/songwriter mode every time I perform it and I enjoy singing it. Guess it shows. Your eloquent words and strong support are much appreciated. Take care, Peter.

A
wonderful performance Peter, a great recording that is very intimate, it's like a live recording from a small folk club you are playing in and everyone is listening intently to every note you sing and play.
I enjoyed this very much, it would have been great to hear some applause at the end as that would have been well deserved.
Thanks, such a fine song.

The Black Guitar
You mention FH's "Man in Black", and if you take your first stanza and sing in the phrasing of that tune, it fits perfectly. While I'm not sure what relevance that has to anything, it seemed interesting considering that the song served as inspiration for this one. However, if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have been reminded of it, because this one is all you - very folky, very sad - I think we all fear that could be us one day. Well played and sung - close and intimate - very nice, and I enjoyed listening - thanks!

Going with the flow
Thanks, Sig. I was fiddling with the opening chord progression and every time I tried to mumble something, "A man in black" came out, so I went with the flow. Your point about fearing that this situation could apply to some of us one day is very insightful. Glad you liked this late night folk open mic. Take care, Peter.

Universal
You've articulated an aspect of each of us, I think, this lonely man on the fringe passing through, at home only when he plays. There is a Man in Black in most of us, I reckon. You've given it an authentic, measured voice. Well done, and thank you.
