Description
A few months ago I posted an acoustic instrumental to demo the L R Baggs Anthem pickup I installed in my Maton acoustic guitar. It was called Anthem.

I intimated at the time that it might end up as a song. Well, this is it.

Many of my seminal singer/songwriter influences (JT, Joni, Jackson, Jimmy, etc.) have written songs about life on the road and this is my attempt at one (even though I’ve never experienced it... ☺).

I used the American term “county line” in preference to the equivalent Australian nomenclature, “municipal boundary”, which doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well ☺.

Same “live” performance modus operandi, unedited, except to smooth out a couple of vocal spikes, using my self-made 000 style acoustic guitar and a Shure Beta58a.

See what you think.

Thanks, as always,

Peter.

Lyrics
Doing Time - Peter Bowen (May 2014) Capo III

[D . A .] [G . D/F# .] [Em7 . . A7] [D . . .]

[D] Bird singing [A] at my [G] window
[D] The sun is [A] shining, [G] too
[D] Guitar is [A] resting [G] on my [D/F#] knee, so
[Em7] Why do I feel [A] blue?

[D] Been on the [A] road since [G] Friday
[D] Five more long [A] weeks to [G] do
[D] Got miles of [A] aisles to [G] recon[D/F#]cile
'Til I [Em7] make it back [A7] to [D] you

[Bm] Absence [A] makes the [G] heart grow [D/F#] fonder
[Em7] Ain't that what they [A7] say
And while I'm [Em7] doing [A7] time
'Cross this [F#m7] county [Bm7] line
I [C] miss you [G] more each [A] day

[D] Another [A] roadhouse [G] burger
[D] Another [A] lukewarm [G] brew
[D] Another [A] run-down [G] motel [D/F#] room
With the [Em7] neon glar[A7]ing [D] through

A [Bm] one-man band down [A] in the heartland
A [G] new town every [A] night
The [C] fans and the [G] music
Make it [A] right

[D] This lonely [A] road I [G] travel
[D] I feel [A] compelled to [G] do
[D] Under the [A] lights, I [G] close my [D/F#] eyes and
I'm [Em7] singing just [A7] for [D] you

[Bm] Absence [A] makes the [G] heart grow [D/F#] fonder
[Em7] Ain't that what they [A7] say
And while I'm [Em7] doing [A7] time
'Cross this [F#m7] county [Bm7] line
I [C] miss you [G] more each [A] day

[D] Bird singing [A] at my [G] window
[D] The sun is [A] shining, [G] too
[D] Guitar is [A] resting [G] on my [D/F#] knee but
[Em7] I'm no longer [A7] blue

[D] Caught my last [A] Greyhound, [G] Friday
[D] Been home a [A] day or [G] two
[D] Your loving [A] arms and [G] tender [D/F#] smile
Are the [Em7] reasons I [A7] love [D] you

I've [Em7] earned some [A7] dime
Singing [F#m7] words that [Bm7] rhyme
While [Em7] heading back [A7] to [D] you
I've [Em7] done my [A7] time
'Cross this [F#m7] county [Bm7] line
And I've [Em7] made it back [A7] to [D] you

So comfortable
What a very pleasant track, Peter. Your voice is in good form and your guitar is, as expected, right on the money. You play with such easy skill that is smooth and refined. This is just a beautiful little song that is in no need of further adornment or exposition. Oh how pleasant, indeed.

Good description
Thanks, Paul. I guess I am in tune with what I can do (and not do) on a guitar and I know the range and style of music that best suits my voice, so comfortable is a good description of what you get. I appreciate your supportive comments, as always. Kind regards, Peter.

Good tune...
So that's what it is, took you a while but you nailed
it, very good lyrics solid guitar tracks and vocal...
I could hear this being built up a little more, but not
much just to help in dynamics...
But this is real nice as is as well..

Peter..Well done...

Good point
Thanks, Tony. I appreciate your listen and kind words. I agree that it could possibly do with a bit more dynamic variation somehow, but in a solo format that is harder. I will keep singing it with that thought in mind and see what evolves. Take care, Peter.

Thanks, Gerald. I was aiming for a road-worn, Americana feel to this as a homage to my early music influences. Take care, Peter.

I was interested in your comment regarding the county line vs. municipal boundary. Your lyrics overall lie very comfortably within what I have always assumed is a certain bit of Americana (Wichita Lineman kind of thing), as often conveyed in C&W lyrics --- counties (as opposed to cities, implying big stretches of open land), Greyhounds, beer, motels, burgers, roadhouses, etc, But maybe that's just because I'm American, meaning that I usually don't hear music that is not from the US or England. So, what do you say? Is there an equivalent Australian "mythology," or is this fundamentally Australian with a slightly different vocabulary? Just wondering.

In any case, a very enjoyable piece of work.

Route 66
Thanks, Les. As I said above to Gerald, I was aiming for a road-worn, Americana feel to this as a homage to my early music influences. That said, many of the terms are common to Australia as well. We do have outback road houses. Burgers are a common food choice at them (but in Australia beetroot is often an ingredient as well :-)). You probably don't find too many warm beers unless it is a six-pack left on the back seat of the car. Greyhound do run buses in Australia but they are not eponymous like the brand seems to be in the US. The term "heartland" is probably more likely to be "outback" or "the bush" here, though. I was originally going to write from an Australian perspective but "county line" fitted in so well where I needed it that I went the full Americana route instead. I appreciate your listen and comments. Take care, Peter.

Thanks, Ricky. Folk is the genre that I feel most comfortable and creative in, so I just go with the flow. I have been influenced by many seminal singer/songwriters and I drew on all their "road" songs to put this together. Take care, Peter.

Cathartic
If you are brave soul, Graham, you can have a beetroot burger with a pineapple ring as well :-) Making a guitar is a cathartic experience. Every time I look at it and sit down and play it I feel a significant sense of achievement. I thoroughly recommend it. Thanks for the kind words re the song, too. Take care, Peter.

CD...
Thanks, Stan. I have recorded a number of home CD's for friends, etc. but I have been thinking it might be time to get professional recording help for a CD. I have just (yesterday) bought a beautiful, mint condition secondhand PRS Angelus Standard cutaway acoustic (e.g. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AngelusSTE/), which is just a fantastic sounding guitar that suits my playing perfectly. Haven't recorded with it yet, but watch this space. Take care, Peter.

Don't stray too far
Thanks, Pari. I suppose the comfortable nature of the track, and my songs in general, come from me just writing songs that I enjoy singing and playing. I try not to stray too far from where I think I best sit, both musically and vocally. I appreciate your kind words. Regards, Peter.

Classic road song - very well done
This song ought to be able to get some commercial traction.   It’s a classic story-ballad in the on-the-road song tradition, and it really works because it’s one hard-working soul (who loves what he does), longing for one woman and coming home to her.   And, in a superhighway-ridden society, he’s traveling the “blue highways,” by bus.

The chord progressions are creative and clean.   You play, and record, very well.

as far
as songwriting, this is one of your strongest yet, i feel. this actually sounds like something published on an album. even the lyrics are strong and i love 'storytelling' lyrics to boot. odd tho, the song seems shorter than the lyrics if you don't read along, but obviously fit when you do.

Thanks, Phil. The original instrumental that this song was based on was done with my 1982 Maton but this vocal version was recorded using my self-made 000. I made the same wrong assumption on your track re the Martin :-) JT has been a big influence and I guess this is some sort of homage to him. Thanks for dropping by. P.S. Adam Rafferty is a fantastic player, too! Kind regards, Peter.
