Come To Me

Description
This song was born from a borrowed guitar. Peter Bowen has just bought a second-hand Paul Reed Smith Angelus acoustic guitar, then went on holidays. So he offered to let me babysit the guitar. A great opportunity to play an impressive instrument. Unfortunately, I am currently suffering from a bout of sciatica which means I can’t walk, or sit for too long. This includes not sitting at a computer too much (e.g. recording and editing music). I couldn’t get down the stairs to my music room anyway.

Nevertheless I was inspired enough to write a new song and plugged a mike into the laptop, sat on the edge of the bed and recorded this. It needs cleaning up, maybe a bass, some keys, but I can’t do that right now - and when I’m on my feet again (hopefully later this week) I think I’ll have a few things to catch up on in various places…

So although it’s raw, I think it does give an idea of the tone of the guitar. No EQing, really, just the “natural” tone supplied by Garageband. So here it is – I hope you enjoy listening.

The song is sung in Bb. The guitar to the left is open G tuning, capoed at the third fret. The right is standard tuning with a capo on the 8th fret.

Thanks PeterB7858 for the loan of the guitar!

Lyrics
Come to me

Verse 1
When the wind is cutting through you
And the rain is your eyes
And all that had seemed true is not so clear
When nights seem to be darker
and the days are steely grey
And you wake up feeling full of doubt and fear

Chorus
Then come to me, you can come to me
Together we'll embrace all that is new
Please come to me, reach out to me
Cause then I'll know that I can come to you

Verse 2.
When the breeze starts to caress you
and sun breaks through the clouds
And you see the world with a smile upon your face
The days are full of laughter
and the nights of sweet repose
and you feel there's not a moment you can waste

Repeat chorus

Middle
Let's face the morning let's fly to France
Let's be outrageous let's take a chance

Verse 3
Are the winds off the southern ocean getting in your bones?
Or do you feel today could be your day?
Are you looking for an answer are you looking for a deal?
Are you lost or have you found your way?

Chorus

Not just nice...
...TERRIFIC!
I love this piece you have so carefully written and performed. So simple and yet so very very pleasant to listen to. The chorus has such a hook to it that I can't get it out of my head. And the lyrics convey such a compelling invitation that it might be impossible to resist. I love the pace of this piece, too, the "Middle" section expressing a wonderful thought "Let's be outrageous and take a chance." Guitar picking is superb as well, and your voice is near-perfect, though I would encourage you to bring it UP in volume in the mix. This is my kind of personal song! (can you tell?) I think it could go BIG if you were able to get it to some commercial artist to perform. Just wonderful, Philip. Such a nice song in every way.

Come to me
Very nicely done, Philip. I really like the song. Up there with your best IMHO. Inviting and inspiring, your vocals draw the listener in to the song. You have also done a fine job capturing the tone of the Angelus. Your playing is precise, yet fluid at the same time. No need for any further arrangement embellishments, in my opinion - but I am a minimalist at heart. Just don't get too attached to the guitar. I will be back next Sunday :-)
Broome is great. Talk soon, Peter.

Back next Sunday
Did I mention that I was going on a three month retreat in the Conga Basin (that's quite near the Congo Basin, but they all play music there), leaving the day before you get back? Heh, heh..

Anyway, thanks for the comments on the song - I'm glad it worked! See you soon.

You are in a great...
... Zone. This, in my book, is in classic territory. First of all the guitar playing, the sound... is hypnotic wonder. But, man, your lyrics and your singing of those poetic, reflective, emotional words. Beautiful...

Very generous words, Jack, and I thank you for them. It is a beautiful guitar - I'll be sorry to give it back to Peter.

This sort of goes back to where it all started for me, Chris - some smokey folk joint with a singer/guitarist singing emotive songs trying to get the listeners to feel what you feel. Anyway, I'm really pleased that you like it!

This is great Philip - if you asked me I'd say don't do anything else to this. Sometimes less is better - trust me I know this lol! Also it's amazing that we can sit on the edge of our beds and still get such a pro sound like this - amazing! Enjoyed, my friend - thanks!

I take the point re simplicity, Sig - sometimes just letting the guitar and voice do the work keeps things focussed better. Of course, it is fun to try and add a few things 😄 But for this one, I think I'll take your advice! Thanks for stopping by!

It stands on its own....
Good songs always do, Guitar and Voice all the other
stuff is just candy...
Depends on how sweet you want it.. :-)
And that guitar, has the perfect sound for someone like
you, that knows what to do with it....

Very cool track Man, hope you get better soon...

Sorry I'm so late on this Philip. This is really beautiful. I believe this is my favourite song of yours. The simplicity of it .... the gentle pure sound of the guitars along with your calming voice makes this a winner. Great melody. Makes me a little melancholy but in a good way.
Cheers

What a moving song
The guitars sound crisp, full and warm - you create such a saturated soundbed. The vocals are particularly well recorded and performed and the message is simple and inspiring. Perfect.
