Description
"Sailing into the Sun" sounds better in French :-)

Another attempt to capture the sound of my new PRS Angelus acoustic.

Several people asked for a mic'd up post of the guitar (rather than the pickup - used in my last two posts)...

I do have an AKG small diaphragm condenser mic but really need to buy another to have a pair to record the guitar, so I used the stereo condenser mics from my H2 Zoom for this piece.

Another instrumental inspired by our recent trip to Broome.

I took the photo of a pearl lugger at sunset from Cable Beach, just west of Broome proper. The piece tries to convey what it might have felt like to be aboard at that time.

The recording is still not where I would like to end up, sound wise, re the guitar but it does go some way to conveying the tone and balance that the guitar possesses. Just a touch of low end roll-off EQ and some subtle room reverb.

See what you think.

Thanks,

Peter :-)

Beautiful tone...
You play with a gentle touch, Peter, and the mellow sound of this guitar is so very pleasant to hear. I very much like the bits and pieces of melody line that spring out of your harmonic chording. I might be interesting to compose a completely separate track with just melody that you can layer on top of THIS track. But this is very nice just as is, too, and certainly evokes the warmth of the photo from Cable Beach. Much enjoyed.

Good idea
Thanks, Paul. Glad you liked it. Yes, I was actually thinking of layering a melodic solo over the top of this. Good idea. I appreciate your support, as always. Regards, Peter

Love
the mellow feel to this. You play this so well. Lots of feeling, good music to just stop and contemplate life. Music like this doesn't need any accompaniment, the acoustic guitar stands on its own very well.

Tinkering with sound
I don't know how much more nuance you need to get out of a recording. You're capturing subtle differences in tonality here with an overall avid presentation. It feels like I'm sitting and listening in the same room as you are playing. However, I recognize sound capture is something you like to explore as a part of your musicality .. so keep on tinkering until you get it where you want it.

The music here is nicely played.

And "Sailing into the Sun" sounds fine in American English : )

The punters...
Thanks, Warren. Yes, I suppose I am a bit of an inveterate tweaker :-) You are right, though, I do have a clear idea of the sound of this instrument I want to capture and I am still feeling my way in doing it. I also agree that "Sailing into the Sun" sounds fine en anglais but saying it in French seems somehow more seductive. Got to get the punter in somehow... :-) Take care, Peter.

A beautiful
melody weaves its way through this. Gorgeous playing. As for mic it captures the nuances of your playing but might be a bit too sensitive for my ears picking up some room ambiance.

French Stuff
Much appreciate you sharing your work with us here. More than advanced recycling here, a pleasant surprise for MJ but your normal offering! Easy to get comfortable with your riffing style.
The tone is warm and present, also a nice departure from the norm.
Nice ideas accomplished with style and grace. Wish more folks put in the time to keep the bar this high!

Just doing what comes naturally
Kind words, Daug. I appreciate them. I just play what comes naturally to me and keep working on extending my playing a bit, whilst trying not to become too derivative. There are only so many chords out there... I love the sound that a good acoustic guitar produces and have fun trying to record it faithfully. It is not that simple, in reality. Thanks, Peter.

C'est magnifique cette très belle chanson
As someone who has spent many days in the last few weeks on a sailboat this really resonates for me Peter. The end of the day, light wind but enough to move us gently through the water, sails yellow in the setting sun.

Your musicianship is outstanding here and whilst you may not be happy with the sound I think it has an honest and very intimate quality (like you're playing on the boat across the deck).

It struck me too that we hold ourselves here against a pretty tall standard. I recently had the pleasure of having one of my compositions performed (not one posted here) and the work there was to get the chords and melody down on charts that were correct and then pass it on to the pro's to play where someone else did the recording. Here at MJ, we compose, perform, and then have the job of recording, mixing and mastering, all of which are specialities in their own right. It seems obvious but it wasn't until I just created the sheet music and stopped there that I fully appreciated how much the artists here take on.

Merci pour le cadeau monsieur. Très gentil.

Keeps me off the streets
Thanks, Doug. You have described perfectly the vibe I was looking for, "light wind but enough to move us gently through the water, sails yellow in the setting sun". Glad it was somewhere near the mark. And you are right about the trials of being a solo singer/songwriter/musician self-recording producer. It is a multi faceted task! Keeps me off the streets, though. And your name appears a lot on the CD :-) It must have been great to hear your music played by others. I appreciate you dropping by (and that reminded me to get you something about Tasmania...). Take care, Peter.

EVERYTHING sounds better in French!
This one'd sound good in Serbo-Croation, too. Confidently & comfortably performed, beautifully recorded. I really dig the ambient sounds in this: I can hear your instrument moving in space and what sounds like your breathing..... Fine stuff!

Cheers,
