Description
I have been playing a few markets and such this year and found I need more songs with a bit of a beat to complement the many reflective fingerstyle songs I have written :-)

This song is one such attempt. I have been singing it for a few months but just got around to recording a version.

Folk Songs 'R Us... Guitar and vocals with a few embellishments to add some interest.

PRS Angelus X/Y miked and Shure Beta58a for the vocals.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter :-)

Lyrics
To Be With You – Peter Bowen (May 2014)

[D] [G] [A] [G] [D] [G] [D] [D]

The [D] waves on the [G] shoreline mark [A] time to the [G] beat of my [D] heart [G] [A] [G]
I [D] still can't be[G]lieve my good [A] fortune at [G] playing this [A] part [Asus4/2]

The [D] birds in the [G] Norfolk pines [A] clamour; they [G] wheel and they [D] play [G] [A] [G]
Warm [C] breezes slow dance through the [G] trees and bring on the [D] day [G] [D]

Chorus 1
I [C] feel like I'm [G] falling in [D] love
Is it [F#m] something that comes from [G] above?
To [D] be with you [G] brings me more [A] pleasure
Than [G] I can dream [D] of [G] [A] [G]

Out on the boardwalk, a child brings a smile to your face
You glide through the promenade, an essay in beauty and grace

The casual touch of your hand brings a thrill to my skin
And one glance from your elfin, green eyes stirs a fire within

Chorus 2
I [C] feel like I'm [G] falling in [D] love
The [F#m] stars are aligning [G] above
To [D] be with you [G] brings me more [A] pleasure
Than [G] I can dream [D] of [G] [A] [G]

The [F] flood tide rolls [C] gently to cover the [D] land [Dsus2/4]
[F] It's the same easy [G] feeling when holding your [A] hand [Asus2/4]

Chords of Verse 2

The moon's on the rise and stars are alight in the sky
We lie by the fire and I'm strumming a soft lullaby

The Southern Cross governs the night and points out the way
To a future so bright and so clear that I can't but obey

Repeat Chorus 1 & 2

To [D] be with you [G] brings me more [A] pleasure
Than [G] I can dream [D] of [G] [A] [G]

To [D] be with you [G] brings me more [A] pleasure
Than [G] I can dream [D] of [G] [A] [G]

A good thing
Thanks, Steve. Yes, I am finding that living with a song for a while before recording it is a good thing, too. I appreciate your kind comments. Take care, Peter.

Hello Peter
Nice to hear a singer/songwriter/musician all in one package, as always I love your posts, this is a pretty song, a nice folk song. I like everything about it, if I were to make one small suggestion, I had no idea from the first 2 verses that this was a love song, you speak of the ocean and such but don't introduce your love until the 3rd line of the chorus, maybe the line "I still can't believe my good fortune ...... could be tweaked to set the stage for the narrative clearer. Love the guitar tone great job on your own harmonies, well done sir! "Right On" Jd.

Perceptive
Thanks for the support, JD. Yeah, I changed the second line of the first verse about 10 times and couldn't quite nail it. In the end, I settled on what is there. I will re-look at it. Your kind words are much appreciated. Take care, my friend. Peter.

With the flow...
Thanks, UB. Acoustic folk, reflective singer/songwriter is where I sit most comfortably in the music spectrum. I just go with the flow. I appreciate you dropping by. Take care, Peter.

Yep....That's
What it is.....Good song...With a bit of work this could
be something songs like this, are few and far between these days...
If I could still sing I would sing about, the things I feel
and see...Love the guitar groove needs some beaf behind it...As is still cool though...

Well done ...Peter

Peace..TG.

Always welcome
Thanks, Tony. Your kind words and thoughts are always welcome. Yeah, I can imagine this arranging up a bit. I'm probably stuck a bit too much in the paradigm of presenting a solo singer/songwriter perspective but, in the end, that's how the song will get heard far more often than not. Take care, Peter.

Thanks, Andy. I was drawn to the natural sound and versatility of the acoustic guitar from a young age. I just keep noodling along :-) Take care, Peter.

to be with you
I recognize what you said about singing a song quite a few times before recording. Especially when you sing harmonies. You have to get the timing right
wonderful and gentle song
very much enjoyed!

To Be With You
Well done Peter ... reminiscent of the 60's folksingers that made their mark. I really like the bridge/chorus melody with the second vocal track. You're right in thinking this way .... when you play to an audience there has to be a variety in your set and this will compliment your finger picking songs ... it has a nice aggressive strum and is a very vibrant sounding tune. You just keep growing and growing as a player and a song writer. Really enjoyed this.
Cheers

Instinctive
Thanks, Stan. I actually find it harder to write songs with more of a beat. I instinctively noodle in finger style... I need to broaden my horizons a bit. Thanks for your supportive comments. Take care, Peter.

To be with you
Nice flow to the song. Engaging lyrics. Crisp sound to the guitar. Variety in the arrangement. All good. How did it go at the market? I would have listened if I'd been walking past! See you soon.
PeterB7858 said 981 days ago (August 22nd, 2014)
At heart
Thanks, Philip. I decided to go the (almost) solo singer/songwriter route again rather than arrange this song more elaborately. It really is a folk song at heart. It has been too cold and wet on Sunday mornings to get to the market lately but it is finally warming up a bit so I will get back soon. Talk soon, Peter.

To Be With You
Hi Peter - nice catchy tune - easy to catch on to the melody and start humming (I know - I did!). The echoed line in the chorus reminds me of the great folk artists of the 70's. Enjoyable tune - nice work - enjoyed my friend - thanks!

Thanks, Neil. Just trying to get something a bit more "up" that most of my finger style stuff. I find I can capture my vocals better in Logic that I did in GB - more tools to tidy it up... :-) I appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

To Be With You
Another enjoyable piece of singing/songwriting from you. Definitely poetry in the lyrics on this. I like the harmonizing with yourself (I think that is you doing both of the vocals) and want to hear more of that in the future! I enjoyed this tune a lot.

Authenticity..
Thanks, J. Glad you liked it. It is me harmonising. I used to do it a lot more but when I hit my solo singer/songwriter patch I eschewed it for "solo" authenticity. I agree, though, I need to bring it back. Take care, Peter.

To Be With You
Very nice. I like the flowing waltz feel. Nice strumming. Just enough picking nuances to bridge the divide between a flat picker and finger picking. I think this may be the best and most balanced recording of the new guitar you've gotten so far.

Sense of flow
Thanks, Andrew. Yes, the 3/4 time does provide a sense of flow and movement. And I was trying to straddle the flat/finger divide :-) X/Y stereo small diaphragm condenser mics seem to be the way to go re the guitar. Take care, Peter.

You have a special way...
...with this folk song style of musical and lyrical writing. The story is clear; the musical delivery supports the story; the guitar playing is confident and pleasant. I note a marked difference in the vocal volume level on this track from other things you've posted. Nice to hear your voice up front and so clearly delivered. Great song and a very pleasant listen.
