Description
i started this song over 2 months ago, recording the bulk of it.... then a very long heat wave set in. my recording set up upstairs couldn't handle the heat. so, i pretty much just took time off from music and the internet for 2 months. finally cooled down some so i could finally get around to doing vocals and the lead guitar, plus mixing.

Lyrics
long days, short days the headache remains
come tomorrow it will start again
some days the problems just melt away
and this retro thing needs it own space
will this day ever end

high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
all depends on where the chips may fall
high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
well that just about covers it all… covers it all

planning for the day or the month
sure hope the pictures will be enough
better days of glory hang on the wall
until they’re destroyed frame and all
would you have it any other way

high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
all depends on where the chips may fall
high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
well that just about covers it all… just about covers it all

comedy laughs at the end of night
i hope i dream of something good tonight
what went wrong, what went right
could tomorrow be easy and light
but tomorrow never knows

high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
all depends on where the chips may fall
high pressure, low pressure
no pressure at all
well that just about covers it all… covers it all

Kinky .....
..... or should I say "Kinkish"? Definite Ray Davies sound in the intro section and in the lyrics. Another excellent post Vic. I really like the way the drums are mixed so large in this - is that using "Drummer" in Logic?
I moved my studio downstairs to get away from the heat in summer - now, in winter, of course it's a little cold :)
Always nice to see you post. And I think I may be able to claim "firsties - Ed Hannifin will be jealous!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

too hot
thanks neil.
i kinda went into a musical malaise as well. no listening to music or playing a guitar for 2 months.
i did use drummer here. it is much more versatile then it looks at first glance. just cutting a region can alter it as well as changing the dynamics of each region.

Drummer
I've been very impressed with Drummer, and used it on both my recent posts at MJ. To add a little extra adjustability, I found that its possible to create a new software instrument track and copy and paste the Drummer track into it - gives a midi version of the Drummer track for tidying things like endings and such.

Safety Kink
Right in the comfort zone. A retro celebration indeed. The production sounds analog in many ways. Thanks for sharing your talents here with us.

very 60's. the beginning riff says it right from the start. seems to me cool guitar riffs where prevalent back then.

I like the way the lyrics
could relate back to the weather stalling progress on this track. Excellent classic style guitar break in the middle there.

the weather.... that didn't even cross my mind. but you are right it easily can. the past 2 and a half months have been in the mid to high 90's, the computer couldn't handle it.... finally cooled down some now.

I think Neil was on target...
...but that may be because I've been listening to a Kinks playlist in the car on some long commutes this past week...

On the other hand, your sound and style as a guitarist is pretty different from Ray and Dave... especially with the 'wetter', more 'verbed or chorused effects...

I find myself wondering what this might sound like with a bigger drum sound but with fewer 'hits' at some points, now that the song is together...
And a little more space for the vocal to slide up out of the mix... I think the temptation, with your style being so guitar centric, is to craft the mix around guitar sounds, but I think you also have distinctive vocal sound that can carry the tune...

Like that Kinks-meets-Byrds bit of lead....

It also...
...reminds me some of the J. Mascis solo album...

Hi Ed
guilty as charged. this morning i was actually thinking if a simpler drum might of been more effective. i guess at the time was more in a hyper mood. as being mostly a guitar player it's easy to concentrate on building the music without thought of the lyrics and vocals.... so i think you summed it up very well.

thanks for the time for the listen and input. very much appreciated

High, Low, No Pressure
Quality retro vibe with the guitar work riding shotgun, as always, Vic. No pressure at all whenever a Vic Holman track is posted - just sit back and enjoy and press "fav". Thanks, Peter.

often the '60's style pops right up. i think the little guitar riffs reinforced that. guitar riffs where really prevalent back then..... or at least the songs i use to hear back then.

We left this era too soon. It's great to hear its streams are still flowing. This is the stuff I love, and your performance, top notch!

Great lyrics ... It must have been like a brand new experience coming back to this. Breaks like that give you fresh ears. Great rocker ... guitars sound great and you have a distinctive voice which carries this. I like the drums ... I'm a big fan of busy drums! The style of mix works well with this tune. Has that analogue feel ... not a lot of EFX . Great work Vic.

Two months!
Two months? How did you do this so quickly?!whne I listen to your work, I always think of the Waterboys lyric
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon.

Tell me , how can I be more Vic?
If I was more Vic, I'd have completed 8 albums and be a major talent.
I can dream .

Pressure
Just how close did that big wildfire get to your studio?

A little break now and then (to relieve the pressure?) is not a bad thing.

Getting all of the elements of a composition to work perfectly together in a self-production is always a tricky thing. Everything here sounds pretty good to me.

Strong...
band arrangement (great guitar lead around 2:08 and following)...drums seem just fine to my ears, but all the guitar interplay is just stellar, and that's what I've focused on... Vocal seems a bit muffled to my ears. Wonder why. Might be something to listen to again. ... I particularly enjoyed the instrumental production of this track. It is solid and really well-mixed.
