Description
Stephen - Guitars, Bass, Vocals
Scott Fugate - Drums

This one was written by Yves (http://www.macjams.com/artist/Symphony101) and I think there's another cover version of it somewhere but I just can't find the link to it. Anyway, Yves sent me his own original version ages ago and I loved the tune. I've never covered another Macjammer's song but this one had to be done quite frankly and Yves graciously allowed me to do so. I could even hear my own version in my head and it was just down to how you bring that into being.

The lyrics I think are excellent and really tell a story and you should hear Yves' version! Much better than mine and maybe he'll share it one day. There are some killer lines in there, my favourite being "It's the way these things happen, they say it's a fair game. But I've got this feeling I'm being fooled all the same." Wry, sour, worldly wise, accepting but unapologetic. Also the bittersweet, sarcastic "...If I may" at the end of the bridge.

Recording-wise I think I threw everything but the kitchen sink at this...around 12 guitar tracks, some of them double or even triple tracked. It's also the last song to feature my old Rickenbacker 12 string before I traded it - right channel, you'll hear it. Also had a bash at the Queen style layered harmony guitars in the intro and the guitar solo... that's a damn sight harder than you'd think! But I always think the harmonist fx pedal versions sound so fake and robitic so this was done the original way, for real. Dr Brian May, for your fine work in this field, I salute you sir.

When it comes to drums, I had no hesitation in asking my favourite drummer, Scott Fugate (http://www.macjams.com/artist/scofugate) and he didn't disappoint. A pleasure to work with, ultimate nice guy and collaborator extraordinaire. And he even lowers his standards to work with the likes of me! Scott.. a true gent! Bless you.

In terms of the mix, I've had this one sitting around for ages and eventually bit the bullet and did my last tweak in the interests of just getting it out there. My limited mixing skills are currently rusty and this isn't meant to be a demonstration, it's more so people can hear Yves' great tune. I hope within the mix you can hear what's intended at least. I hope you enjoy the song. A lament for anyone that's ever been kicked in the teeth and doesn't know why. My thanks to Yves for writing such a gem and being gracious enough to let me cover it. Again, thanks to Scott for his drums.

Lyrics
I'm Going Home (By Symphony101)

They said that was it; I think, here, I'm done. This chapter will end and soon I'll be gone.
I had my own dreams, thought life would be great. Then I heard one morning everything changed just like that.
It's the way these things happen; they say it's a fair game. But I've got this feeling I'm being fooled all the same.

And I, I'm going home. Whatever happens to me now, what I'll become I just don't know.
And I, I'm going home. No regrets for yesterday; no fear for tomorrow.

I've always thought hard work would pay off but now that they don't need me, they'd just see me off.
I had my own dreams, believed in fairytales. How far I wanted to go, no one really cares.
Now I'm sitting in the lounge, one way ticket in my hand. Not angry or complaining, I'd just like to understand.

And I, I'm going home. Whatever happens to me now, what I'll become I just don't know.
And I, I'm going home. No regrets for yesterday, no fear for tomorrow.

I don't think there's much left to say. I'm leaving; walking my way.
And as for my tomorrows, well I hope you don't mind but I'm taking them with me ... if I may...

And I, I'm going home. Whatever happens to me now, what I'll become I just don't know.
And I, I'm going home. No regrets for yesterday, no fear for tomorrow.
And I, I'm going home. Whatever happens to me now, what I'll become I just don't know.
And I, I'm going home. No regrets for yesterday, no fear for tomorrow.

Attention to detail.
Lots going on here. Emotional vocal, and a lot of care in composing and layering all the instruments. The result is that it has a fine emotional quality to it that is very engaging, and I listened more than once to take in all the details.

Thanks a lot. You end up putting so much into these things that you wonder how much gets noticed! I suppose it all filters in at a certain level. Cheers for taking a listen or two!

Great song getting it's due and then some
excellent production - densely layered yet open at the same time. Good stuff. Your vocal delivery is right on the money.

Thanks Kevin. If you start off with a great song then it's kinda down to you from there how you mess it up! Hopefully it's gone ok. Thanks for having a listen.

Truly beautiful work...
...by three gents who are not only high on my list of talents here, but who just happen to be three very affable guys (what a nice combination!) This IS an extremely well-written song and I know Yves will be absolutely thrilled to hear the wonderful work you and Scott poured into this (I was sitting here listening pretending I WAS Yves and taking this all in--I'd be glowing for sure). Fine vocal from you Stephen, in timber, delivery, phrasing and placement on the track it's just where and how it should be. Scott, you've sparked this song greatly with your playing (and along with Stephen, you're my favorite percussionist here, so happy to hear you at work again). I think the mix was good enough and I certainly think those aspects of the performance and arrangement you wanted to share were very evident throughout Stephen (what a nice production--and the homage to Queen was a good touch!) One of those songs I hear on Macjams that I wish could be broadcast to a much wider audience; I know they'd love it! Thanks again to you all. Michael

Wow ... what a big undertaking. You have created a pretty clear mix considering all the layers. Enjoyed the harmony leads and I agree with Bud ... great vocal delivery.
Cheers

Those layered harmonic guitars just suck up the tone, as you can hear from the muddy intro and there's only so much jiggery pokery you can do in mix and master to counteract it. I have no idea how the professionals do it but I guess that's why they have their job and I have mine! Thanks Stan.

Sorry for being late, Stephen. Been busy... Great to hear you back at MJ. Really like the vocal work on this. The 12(!) guitar tracks blend in well in the mix. Fine work by Scott, too. As always. Very fine song by Yves that you have done proud. And I like the Queen nod, too. Thanks, Peter.

Cheers Peter. Ah, the old Ricky 12.. it made a great sound but I can't say I miss it. Dreadful thing! Still, it served it's purpose here. I'm very lucky to be able to work with the likes of Scott and indeed your good self and I don't take that for granted. And Yves, bless him. Very grateful he allowed me to cover his song. Thanks for the listen and kind comments.
