Description
Hello world!
I've been listening to a lot of Chic, and Duran Duran.
And I haven't read the book, but my wife has, so i stole the title.

Lyrics
Gone Girl
The Ghosts of Malibu
Fade into Light,
Fade out for you
I can't see you anymore, no.
Dead kids
Come stealing back to life
Secrets eat this town from inside
I can't feel you anymore, no
In the town where I was born.

You never let me any nearer
You were gone when you were here.

Round here
The ghosts have gathered round
The beach fires have now all burned out
In the town where I was born.
Gone Girl
I drive the vacant streets
White trash
Borne on a summer breeze
I can feel you anymore
In the town where I was born.

You never let me any nearer
You were gone when you were here.

(Gone Girl
In drugstore windows
I can't find the end of this rainbow
I cant feel you anymore).

Tell them cops the case is closed
Tell your mom, donate your clothes
Burn down the house where you were born

Burn down the house where you were born

Awesome ;)
The music is great, your performance is wonderful, but the lyrics are some of your best. I love the way you've juxtaposed things that represent absence and presence, "dead kids come stealing back to life" "you were gone when you were here," "the beach fires have now all burned out," "the ghosts have gathered round." Since we met, I don't think I've written a song without thinking about you during the lyrics-writing stage and you always push me to work a little harder. This song is quite a push.

Hi Lisa
The gestation period of this track was longer than a baby elephant. It started off as a darker, electronic track ( I may post the demo out of interest), then drifted off into Daft Punk, then into Chic, before it ended up back into what I normally do. This was over like 6 months, very frustrating as I just couldn't settle on how I wanted the track to sound. The lyric hasn't changed much from the original demo, so Its a darker lyric than the music. It was inspired by a chapter in Rob Lowes autobiography about kids disappearing where he grew up in Malibu, and the tone was very inspired by Don Henely's Boys of Summer, a lyric that I love .
There are lots of things going on in the lyric, and as with most of my stuff,it's written for feel, rather than direct meaning. Rachel took the piss out of 'You were gone when you were here' , but for me that line is about someone stuck physically in a place they don't want to be, but mentally they have already moved on.
Great to hear from you, thanks for the listen.

Solid effort here Steve
love the Niles guitar work - spot on mister. Agree with Lisa about the lyrics. Funky bass too and a striding break - who could ask for more?

Yes!
I like the sound, though I don't know anything about the bands that were the inspiration. It just sounds good! Missed hearing your music! I agree with what Lisa commented. Your writing has a lingering power.

I did read the book, and man, was she crazy. I'm picking up a little David Bowie in your vocal style? Nice track. Enjoyed.

Excellent track David ......
........ I mean Steve of course ;)
Beautiful clean, clear mix - terrific playing and vocal performance. Lyrics are perfect. You have one of the most convincing vocal presentations at MJ, and it's always a joy to see/hear something new from you.
Also unnervingly exciting to see Lisa still hovers around the traps here at MJ - anything new from you soon Lisa?
Excellent, excellent post Steve!
Cheers from the Deep South!

I love Chic
Can't take DD. This is good, however - great composition, sound and style. More Bowie than DD, I would say.

Gone Girl
Very cool song. Your style and musical influences are most definitely drawn from some great bands from the 80's era, but your sound and production are all 2014 - really well done - clean and clear - nice work!

How did I miss this?
Somehow missed this over the last few times I've visited MacJams. Weird.

OK, that over with this is amazing. It has a lot of attention to detail in it, from the active bass line to the varied synth sounds and the emotional performance of the vocal. It's reminiscent of Duran-Duran yes (don't know Chic so can't comment) but not a copy-cat sound by any means. To me it sounds like something turned out by someone who has been selling albums and touring for years. The lyrics are smart and sharp, very evocative. Keep this up and you may have to make music for a living...

Gone Girl
I really like your plaintive vocal against the 80's sound back drop. Fine musicianship and a very catchy song hiding some very fine lyrics. Nice, indeed. Thanks, Peter

I love...
...the TWO rhythm guitars playing against each other...

Both the bass and the drums are rock solid. And you manage to get something really good out of what could be a somewhat cheesy synth tone.

As is always the case, the vocal is top notch, and as Lisa notes, the lyrics are great. Very novelistic... reminding me, in fact, of a book I read twenty years or more ago, that I can't remember any more...

Terrific...

Hi Steve,
