Description
Been a few months, so I'm slipping back in with a tune I started back in April or May. I pulled it out and finished a couple of weeks ago and figured I'd finally post it.

No laughing I my "string arrangement" skills, please. Some time ago someone here mentioned that he does his orchestral arrangements note by note by hand (I THINK it was Symph101). That had always impressed me and I thought I'd lock away my impatience and give it a try--but VERY simply.

I must say I hated the experience, but it was a pretty cool self-lesson.

ME: bass, painstaking quartet midi, a. guitar, Addictive Drums proggin.

I hear a Beatles flare to the track
very realistic drums
the harmonies are sweet not over done, matches the track
lead vocals, always admire your lower register
Good string arrangement, just add dynamics ...

Great beginning and vocal. Harmonies original and tasty too. This song is SO good that I was (at first listening) momentarily distracted by the *Beatles-y reference @ 0:45 - but that little complaint quickly dissolved. Love the way this song imaginatively unfurls and the arrangement towards the end. Will enjoy dl, Thanks!

Sam, you are a master a creating vocal arrangements that add depth and interest to the main vocal line. Such a creative musical bed, too. Love the Ray Manzarek keys solo :-) Great to have you back around. Inspirational. Thanks, Peter.

I've found around the beginning of fall to around mid winter to be my most creative periods--partially because the summers in Georgia are long and EXTREMELY hot. Heat depletes me, and oddly, I hate air conditioning. (???). So now that work is slowing down and fall's a month away, I may be turning back to music more.

I like your strings
Good classic pop rock style (not classical) string arrangements here. Drums are good (are they real or something like a Kontakt 5 library?) George Martin produce this? Cool.

Hey John
I don't use strings all the time, but on the rare occasion that I do again, I may give the "hand notes" one more try. Maybe I'll get better.

Glad you stopped by for a listen.

classic sammydix quirk. unique chord progression, engaging lyrics, and smooth vocals. the strings are no laughing matter; they work nicely within the arrangement. mmm... not getting the beatles vibe other commenters have mentioned, but maybe that's just me. enjoyed. thanks for the d/l.

Palace of Realization
Great work as per your norm Sam. I have a question, if one didn't write one note at a time by hand how would they do the work? Maybe that's an unfair question. The work you did on the strings is great. The keyboard cameo works well.
All around a great job. No backing up here.

Hey Daug
well before I would use a midi loop, then mess around with the predetermined notes. More recently though, I've started playing things myself on guitar via Midiguitar. But here, I specifically wanted to try the note by note method. But after doing that, playing parts with my guitar is the clear winner for me. Thanks man.

Fatastic vocal melody, Sammy. Really engaging and well delivered (as always!) I get around string arrangements by asking Symphony101 to do them for me so kudos to you. I wouldn't say Beatles-like at the 0:45 mark but rather Beatles-inspired, which is my book is high praise indeed! Really enjoyed.

Sam's back...
Hey Sam,
Good to hear you back ... I like the loose drum sound ... well composed ... fits the song. Sweet chord progression ... the strings are well done and that harpsichord is the icing ... I also enjoyed the way the bass walks. Cool Sammy vocals as usual. I was wondering where you drifted off too... breaks are good ... I think I need one but my addiction seems stronger.

Palatial
Often times we over-complicate a song and its impact is inversely lessened. There are plenty of elements in play here to provide a complex listening experience. The simplest of lines often become the most haunting. I like everything that's going on here in this .. palace.

That Beatles vibe shows up in almost everone's chunes sooner or later. That distorto harpsichord is KILLER! I listened to that part about 7 times.... The quartet sounds ace BTW.

Superb.
Some Beatles likenesses in the way you've used the strings, but this is mostly like nothing else I've heard. A detailed bit of composition, I had to listen more than once to appreciate it. I love the choices of chords and the way the vocal and guitar are woven together with all the other ingredients.

Beatles? Eh, not so much really. It DOES sound like sammydix, however. The drums sound live. How did you do that? I mean they sound kind of loose and ragged. When I use AD they always sound so precise. I won't laugh at the strings. Sounds fine to me. BV tops, as always.

Hey LK
I go into the midi pool and fool around with different velocities (as opposed to just letting the "humanizer" do it alone). NOT the entire trk, but specifics spots where I want a specific sound (taking advantage of AD's velocity layers). Seems to pay off. Of course I change the midi itself in spots--take away certain hits and add my own to better fit the song/style. Really glad to 'see' you dude.

Seems to have an awkward lift-off ...
... just sayin’

When I heard the song for the f-i-r-s-t time, the first 45 seconds or so were very confusing to my ears, perhaps because I’d never heard any part of the song before, and so my ears couldn’t really decide which part was supposed to be carrying the “rhythmic center.”   The guitar, or the drums?

Now, having listened to the song all the way through ... and I do enjoy it very much ... I can no longer hear the effect.   But it occurs to me that the addition of a bass track might remove that effect, and perhaps, further improve the song?

Perhaps
an "acquired taste" kinda syndrome? But I do understand what you mean. There is a bass line (tho not very well played)--unless you mean string bass?
Really appreciate you dropping by to listen. Surprised me.

Two things...
1) My song Back to Samasara is now working, so thanks for pointing that out. Guess I should test this stuff. For some reason I had to redo the MP3 file for it to play in the MJ player. Have a listen. It is nothing wonderful but a couple friends here liked it (they may say that out of pity).

2) These are great strings! George Martin would be proud. Good arrangemnt actually, not that I am some expert on all that. The harpsichord sound in the middle is a bit like In MY Life. Nicely recorded acoustic as well. I like how you do the word answer at about 2:20. I have listened to this a couple times before actually. Good stuff Sammy.

Help me...
My hearing is slowly going, Sammy. Post the lyrics.

The generally feeling I get from the whole mix is that it is "right here, right now", sort of a life-sounding performance. At that, I thought it was a refreshing way to look at mixing, leaving out the unnecessary reverb and effects that so many layer onto this kind of a song. Good for you! And, hey: the strings have a very immediate feeling to them, too. It worked for the Beatles, so why not you? And you are a brave man to keep spreading your wings and learning new things. Bravo. Glad I listened to your "Palace."

picked up on how I intentionally kept the trks basic in the mix to cover for the different elements. For me, that gives a song a more upfront, rawer feel. I'm glad you listened too, and thank you.
