Description
This is another one written by myself and John Carlin many years ago. A year or so ago, I had the idea of it being a big orchestral James Bond theme type song and asked Yves (Symphony101) to join me and he quickly recruited Laurie to sing (Lholden). To give him a rough idea of the song, I quickly recorded a demo on guitars and sang the melody.... badly. I told them to take off a lot of my guitars from the demo and replace with Yves' orchestration and they did a great version after a lot of hard work - you can hear it here. It speaks for itself I think.
http://www.macjams.com/song/74158

Anyway, I of course sent the original demo to John so he knew what was going on and in fact he loved it. All snarly guitars, wah pedals and U2-style chiming delay. He reckoned it sounded like an unused track from "Achtung Baby"; high praise indeed. So Yves' version went out and of course it's great, as you'd expect. But I always enjoyed listening to my own demo (apart from the singing which was quite frankly appalling and extremely out of tune in places) so recently I thought it'd be cool going back and doing my own version properly.

Sing in tune as best you can, add a lot of overdriven guitars, delay, funky wah noises, more overdriven guitar, some bass.. turn the overdriven guitars up louder.. you get the idea. This is what came out and it captures the feel of that original demo very closely, while being a more polished performance and production. And I think still retains more than a twinkling of U2 to my ears. Hope you enjoy - I'm off to find some ridiculously large shades and a leather jacket and swan about the house like I'm solving third world debt!

Lyrics
Today the world's going to scream out loud, today no one has anything to talk about.
Cry when you feel everyone else's pain cause baby that's the one thing that'll keep you sane.

Tomorrow is just another day with nothing to think and less to say.

Maybe you should save yourself some time; maybe you should stay behind the lines.
They tried to kill those baby blues but none of them could fill your shoes.

Tomorrow is just another day. With nothing to think and less to say.

So you had a funny feeling inside? You knew that you'd be taken for a ride.
But did you do after all your talk? Kept quiet while they took him for a walk.

Tomorrow is just another day. With nothing to think and less to say.
Tomorrow is just another day. WIth nothing to think and less to say.

Tomorrow you'll be firmly under thumb; tomorrow will be your kingdom come.
Once you swore that you'd never fall down and now there's nobody else around.

Tomorrow is just another day. Nothing to think and less to say.
Yeah tomorrow is just another day. Just another day. Nothing to think and less to say.
Yeah now, it's just another day. It's just another day. Yeah tomorrow's just another day.
Yeah now, it's just another day. It's just another day.
Just another day.

A swirling and thoroughly enjoyable slice of power pop! I don't care how often I read you slamming your own singing, I think you have a great voice. Just enough rasp to give it character and an instantly recognizable timbre. Having a Lennon-esque range sure helps, as does the accent. Nice one Stephen!

Thanks Andrew. If it passes muster with the master, I can't complain! I don't mind the vocals on this, although it is the comp of about 9 takes. The vocal on the original demo was painful though - there's not liking your singing and then there's just being out of tune! I never even thought about the accent - I wonder what it sounds like to other ears.. Thanks for the listen Andrew!

Awesome
Stephen, I love your songwriting ! Tomorrow, and also You and Me are my top favorites. The version we did with Laurie brought back great memories. Your vocal approach here is fantastic and the arrangement is fantastic too ! Excellent production, and I guess it is difficult with multiple guitars. Your vocals are also awesome mate. Fantastic work.

Cheers Yves. Wouldn't have made it without the impetus to record something for you in the first place! The production was fiddly - you know how I detest all that messing about! Thank you for your support my friend.

It has that Bond theme swagger and the shades will definitely not be out of place :-) I agree with Andrew re you putting too much pressure on yourself re your vocals. They sound just fine. Good song and a quality big production performance. Nice one. Thanks, Peter.

Cheers Peter! I think most people cringe when they hear their own voice recorded and played back but it's the only one I have so I'll just have to get over it. As long as I can get enough takes to comp something where most of the right notes are in the right places in the right order, that's good enough. Thank you for taking the time out to have a listen mate.

James Bond with Soul
That filter is too much! The hard work on the vocal is shinning through.
A ballad form in the end which is not a bad thing. That little hook is working well. Great take on 70s pop.

Thanks Daug! Maybe should have gone a little easier on the filter admittedly..! If you've got a good hook, why not flog it to death, eh? Still, working that wah pedal is way too much fun. Glad you enjoyed it.

dirty
grit with a melodic drive. awesome combo to pull off. I really like that jet plane phasing effect, gives the song motion. head still bopping.

Thanks Sam! You can't beat a bit of dirty grit in a song I think. Clean tones are all well and good but once in a while... ya know? The phased guitars were one of those things where you push a button in Logic and immediately think "Oh yes, I'm having that!". Maybe a bit lower in the mix in retrospect but nothing about this song was about moderation! :-) Cheers for the listen mate.

Thanks Terry. I'm very jealous of John's lyric writing ability - clearly the result of a more evolved brain that my own which still turns out the calibre of "I feel free, up in a tree, having a pee"! I might eventually dig my way out of the old songs I have to work through and do something current. Thank you for haing a listen.

You see Stephen...
...I admire your work as a vocalist here, not just because it's so right in the pocket, but also because there's SO MANY words to this verse. You'll notice the songs I do usually have about 16 or 17 words (tops) before they repeat themselves over again, so yeah! You and Mr. Carlin have written a really exciting and driving kind of song, very cool stuff here. Loved the arrangement, so much panache and verve; it got me going! Thanks for the good time I had and that reminds me, it's been quite a few years since I've swanned about anywhere, so this is as good a time as any...I'm off! Michael (Hey folks--look at me...I'm swanning dammit!)

You see Michael, this is what happens when a song is written by someone who knows unequivocally that they will never have to sing it! I honestly enjoyed the playing of this, the panache as you note, and can't promise there weren't a few over enthusiastic whirls of the arm for those chords in the hook. It's the little things that amuse me as you know. Swan on, my friend. Swan on. But don't forget to occasionally duck.. Thanks very much mate - I appreciate the kind words.

Great song, nice pace in the tune, strong riff, intense vocal. Yet another example of someone taking simple ingredients and making something strong and sophisticated out if them. Thanks for the download.

Really cool in all it's old school pop goodness. Very Garage. Crunchy guitars, really nice lush vocals, super retro way-wah. I keep thinking of Chris Difford of Squeeze when I hear your voice. Well done.

Crunchy guitars are the way to go some day and you can't beat a good bit of wah-wah for some extra dimension. Perhaps not on every song but now and again is good. I do like Squeeze so thanks for that! Cheers for taking the time to listen.

What they said...
...especially the tight mix of the band and your soaring vocal. This is really well-produced and the backing accompaniment is first-rate. Powerful stuff. (I'm not really genre-qualified to comment further, but musically I think this is really quite superb.)

I can relate
I have tried to sing on most of my songs over the years because I really like singing, but for better productions of some of them I've frequently been able to get someone here at MJ to rescue the song for me LOL. I never had much practice to widen my range and stay on key, etc...

If you ever hear one of my older songs that I sang on, you'll no doubt feel like you've done a really good job on the vocals in this one :D

Now, off to take a listen to the collab on Yves' page.

Cool Power Pop!
Kinda made me think a little of Secret Agent Man a bit.. Even though the drums are a loop they work; for my ears maybe a tad more bottom (arse) in them, and maybe a smidge more bass guitar too. I like the over the top effects, it works well for the track!
