Description
I actually got time to write and record something brand new. This is the first from the lot. Complete opposite of my last post.

Me: guitars, AD electro kit, and bass. BUT I played it with my guitar using JO Midi guitar and a SampleTank patch. I must say I play a pretty good fingered bass using a pick and a 6 string. Never knew. Too bad I can't play the real deal like this.
This song needs synths bad.

Lyrics
Smile

I left my house and i lost my way
took another path
and was photographed
when in Rome...you know what they say
so i struck a pose
even wore their clothes
i know that none ever mean me harm
so best turn on my better charms

i guess they think that i'm unaware
of stupid words behind secret stares
better get back to the romance with my mind

so i smile
because people smile

they don't know how a man can bleed
try to take me down
while i laugh alone
it's what i want, and not what they need
so i can't be fooled
i know all the rules
i'll even listen to EDM
just a torture on a whim

think it's about time to renovate
clear the head for a better way
best to get back to the romance with my mind

so i smile
because people smile

perhaps i'll turn...it all around
and keep a solid back beat like a disco sound
instead i'll get back to the romance with my mind

so i smile
because people smile

Cool factor
I really like the beginning to the song and that bass sounds really good. Nice groove and some special guitar parts. Vocals and harmony are what I've grown to expect from you. The mix is imaged nicely and levels are spot on.

very good use of your tools
punchy, moving forward, almost in your face
the bass, rollin, fat, I like that!
it's friday, in LA, traffic
so I'll be listening smile many times.

I've
been getting that since my last post ("in your face"). Folks at my DAW forum said that same thing. I think I like it since a rawer, more natural sound is what I'm after.

The bass sounds great in this ... Ive used a guitar before for bass and it works great especially getting it to sit right in those mids without a real low thump if that's what you're after. Cool guitar sounds ... I really like the reverb sound on that track centre ... spring? The ending is cool when the drum changes to that open hi hat and you funk out on the bass ... dig the lyrics and always a treat to hear your singing. Like this track a lot! ... made me smile.... especially the ending.
Oh ... I don't think it needs any synth ... but it's all subjective isn't it...

hey Gadz
I remember you doing a bass with your guitar. The left guitar is mainly straight "amped" w/no effects except a tiny delay, the middle surfy guitar is just my regular guitar pitched down an octave, and the right squishy sounding guitar was run thru a PSP Nitro effect. Verb I don't remember except that it's a B2Audio Breeze preset slightly tweaked (Breeze is my main algo verb for just about everything); Valhalla Room, close second.
"Made me smile": mission accomplished. :)

At the end I was laughing at myself for playing the "bass" so intently. Can't take oneself too seriously.

groovin'
I don't care if it's played through midi guitar. That bass is just ace. You really let it groove, especially near the end. A very cool tune.

the
good part about trying other instruments via a guitar, is that it's still a human behind the performance. So it's still has a human feel with it's benefits and flaws. Keyboardist don't get to have all the fun anymore.
appreciated, mystrag

No synth needed............the guitar textures and bass are so cool. They fill it out just enough while leaving space to breathe. The twangy guitar tones are so very cool. Bass lines melodic and funky. Great vocals. Loving the harmonies.

Thx, Andrew
Those harmonies on "smile" just sounded like a "smile" to me, even if a sardonic one (with the slight, but on key discordance). When I listen now, I can hear a bit of a jazzy tone to them. Didn't occur to me at the time tho.

Groovin...
... mellow music making. I'm digging this tune of yours, sammy. It hits a zone, a real good zone. Nice subtle harmonies mixed with the mellow instrumentals. Kudos!
sammydix said 1063 days ago (September 22nd, 2014)
Thanks DD.2
I kinda got into a 'zone' while recording it. I usually do everything so damned fast so I can move on to 'what's next', but took a slowed down stance during this one. Felt like I was in a band again where we'd go thru the over and over rehearsals before a show.

Hey, your use of the technology to get this sound is all part of the total package - don't be so hard on playing the real deal! How you got here is irrelevant. Really great sound Sammy!

You're
right, of course. I'm still wary of going 'too far', but this *is* the 21st century. And now (at least more commonly) we guitar players can do what keyboardists have been doing for years. Gotta love it.

Many thx for tuning in, Salt.

Hey Sam - sorry I'm late to the party on this one. It appears that it would be totally un-original of me to say that bass line is cool, but it was! In fact the whole song oozes cool grooviness. Nice work, my friend - enjoyed!

The bass sounds convincing. I'm pretty sure you could do this on a real bass, Sam. I love the cackle at the end, and the harmonies that precede it. I dunno about synths. Electric piano, maybe.
