Description
This is one of the soundtracks that is quite special to me for a few reasons, so of course there's a long story below. But since it's a lot to ask to read my ponderings and general frou-frou - here's some recent good news:

Challenging Impossibility was selected to be part of the inflight entertainment on all United Airlines flights starting this October. I was a small part of that project and posted 'Time' here back when it started screening. Here's a little background story in case you're interested.

A few years ago I was standing on the stairs outside an old building in Manhattan. Being part of free meditation classes in the city I often sing ancient Vedic mantras and spiritual songs with people who come to leave the hustle and bustle of New York life behind for a little while and want to learn about music and meditation.

On that particular evening, while I was trying to prepare inwardly, this beautiful music played in my head. I looked at the sky and listened to the whole piece, enjoying the flow, expanding melody and effortless buildup. I also thought that I would probably either forget or never be able to put it into anything tangible, as is so often the case when you're not near your instrument or sound gear. So I was at peace - what can you do.

A few weeks later I was working on Challenging Impossibility, a short documentary about Sri Chinmoy's feats of strength, and the only part left to score were the end credits. Playing right after the heart warming conclusion of the story I wanted to do my best to prolong that sublime atmosphere, so I tried to remember the experience I had that late summer evening in Noho.

I started working on the chord progression and got to a point where I was fairly happy with my little soundtrack. At least it would be calm enough so that people spoke softly after the showing, and maybe even tried to absorb what they had seen for a few moments longer. But there wasn't enough time to complete the composition I had envisioned.

During the 2012 Olympic Games in London, a bronze statue of Sri Chinmoy was inaugurated by Olympians at University College London. As part of the A Moment’s Peace event, a video honoring legends like Carl Lewis and Bob Beamon who also came to pay their tributes, was shown.

I got a call from Sanjay, the same film maker and friend who had worked on the short film, asked for a fitting soundtrack for that presentation video. I think 'epic' was the barely adequate feeling we were going for, given the footage - Olympic records being broken in front of thousands of cheering people. I was inspired to have another try and finish what I had started.

The posted track is what I was able to come up with. From what I've heard the event itself was incredible and the video well received. I am still grateful for having been a tiny part of it for a few minutes during that video presentation.

You'll forgive lengthy description but MacJams is one of the few places online where I have the feeling that we can still indulge each other's musical or personal follies and accomplishments:)

And to finally get to the reason I am posting this track now - out of the blue we were informed that 'Challenging Impossibility' was chosen by the Tribeca Film Festival to feature on every United Airlines flight starting this October for a few months as part of the inflight entertainment.

So if you're flying with United Airlines in the next few months, and you've already seen 'Edge of Tomorrow' or any of the other Hollywood blockbusters, you could instead watch 'Challenging Impossibility' and let me know if I did a half decent job with the soundtrack, I'd be so happy and grateful!

Thanks Sigmund!
Coming from someone who's posted some of the most impressive collaborations here recently, that's a humbling compliment. Any reaction from a real person is as real as the world gets btw, so thanks again.

You certainly
achieved that feeling of serenity with this beautiful piece; not only in the chords, but the instrumentation and pace. Beautifully done.....and yes I definitely approve of the practise of meditation for drawing on our inner talents etc. and more. Congratulations are definitely in order here on your contribution to the success with the film festival, regards M

A triumph
Uplifting, powerful, haunting in places... takes me to the Snuffy Walden/Marc Shaiman kind of space. Really beautiful! Dense, lush, but fully dimensional... A delight!!

More..
Snuffy Walden did all the scoring for The West Wing. Marc Shaiman does most of Rob Reiner's films, including The American President...

then builds... and builds... crescendos... and then the heart of the song, weaving it all together. Wow Parichayaka, and thank you for this orchestral delight...

Great story and news, Pari. The music is uplifting and inspiring. So glad to hear MJ'ers achieving recognition in the "real world", as Sig puts it. Much kudos. Thanks for sharing it with us. Regards, Peter.

Ha - the elusive 'real world'. If we depended on 'real world' recognition many of us would have never even started making music. Thanks for listening!

A Big Sound
I enjoyed the back story.

It's always nice to be connected to a project bigger than yourself.

The music has gravitas.

Congratulations as you certainly deserve such.

I posted an older arrangement, La Catedral Preludio, that you commented you also would have enjoyed it going into a "second round". So, I kept the original but slowed it down and am pleased with the results.

I'm gonna sound corny, but who cares. This reminds me of being a kid and drinking from a pure, crystal clear, cool stream. Congrats on deserved recognition too!

It's great to see a fellow MacJammer getting recognition in the wide world. The music warrants it, of course. Great job.

thanks Graham.
The 'wide world' doesn't have time to recognize small efforts, and some of the nicest feedback and encouragement I've received here in MJ. I think many of us share the same experience - there's no substitute for musician friends and kind words.

Great music
In honor of a great man. I watched the movie and your music was perfect for the footage (even though I thought the footage a bit strange in a couple of places ;-). Inspiring indeed.

Good to hear the enhanced version of the end credits here on MJ as well.

Congratulations on your own well deserved credit/recognition/success with this project!

Peace and thanks,
Henrik

I just saw that they posted the film on the website a few days ago. Glad you took the time. My favorite tracks of the film aren't mine though (I'll always admire Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel). Still, a wonderful experience from beginning to the end. So many personal, unforgettable memories surrounding the events from the film.

Uplifting...
...Perfect for United Air, perfect for any positive film situation where triumph over adversity is the general theme. "Chariots of Fire" comes to mind, though your track is much more solemn. ... The skies open up; sun beams through; life is renewed; hope is not just a possibility; it's a reality. Very beautiful composition. Congratulations on all its success so far.
