Description
Sound Rhythm was a one hour event of through improvised music presented at Roulette in Brooklyn, NY 10/14/14. Chris Cochrane - guitarist and songwriter organized the evening for six musicians with a time frame "score" devised to present different combinations of duos, trios, quartets, quintets and then finally the sextet that you hear here. I placed my laptop on a chair downstage with a full screen clock running so we could all follow the score of times to come in and out. This recording is a combination of a rough house and board mix combined with my Zoom H2 placed downstage.

The players are:
Jessica Lurie - saxophones and flute
Chris Cochrane - guitar
Billy Martin - drums and percussion
Kato Hideki - bass
Brian Chase - drums
Kevin Bud Jones - analog synth and electronics

Thanks to our own Warren Smith for attending and documenting some of the show - including the picture used here.

The only thing

Thanks Jack
I was drafted by Chris. It's a challenging hang with this group of gifted musicians. Check out Billy Martin on Youtube. The rest are all excellent as we'll - but Billy is all over the map as drummer, producer and theorist/teacher. A really nice guy to boot. I feel really lucky to have landed in such smart company.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out
This was the first time we ever played as a group no rehearsal - no notes or discussion of ideas. I play with Chris, Kato and Brian in Collapsible Shoulder - but this line up was a first for everyone.
The only guide was the score which looked something like this:
0:00 Jessica, Brian, Billy
5:00 Jessica, Brian, Billy Kato
10:00 etc. etc.

I wish...
I had a group of musicians to gather and play music with. Kevin, this is one of those pieces of music that if I didn't know where it was recorded I would say New York. The creativity that flows out of that town is legend. The genre is Other, may I suggest Improv Cagean Jazz. Thanks for posting this....

Thanks for taking time to check this out
I realize this is not for many can challenge patience. Music like this does not translate so well beyond the moment - but I'm proud of how this section stands as a recording. Yes - I feel lucky to have access to the scene here - and it is still vibrant. The following night I played another show with Collapsible Shoulder - and then rehearsed Airport Seven for and upcoming gig. Still no guitar playing though.

Musical Roulette indeed...
You keep stumbling on all these wonderfully creative ways to express sound and to redefine what is "art" and what is just simply "fun"... This is a very inventive track, Bud, and, in its own unique way, very enjoyable to experience, even in a recording. I can imagine how cool it would be to participate in such an event live. Keep on pushing the envelope. This is cool.

Paul - so generous as usual
this was indeed fun - and it seems the audience enjoyed it as much a s we did. I was sorely outclassed by this bunch - but fitting in is part of the challenge - for me especially.

This was dance
doing our best to avoid overworking a groove or piling on the dissonance. Chris did a great job with the time structure. The last ten minutes was the only time we all played together.

Roulette Final Section
The piece builds slowly, it seems as people gain confidence in slotting into a role and a space, but, as anticipated, it morphs into a groove and becomes more accessible. The slow ride out is more assured and interesting. Fascinating exercise. Thanks, Peter.

This was the last 15 minutes
of a 55 minute improvisation - so we all had gained a little more confidence and insight by then. Until we took the stage that night for sound check we had never played together as an ensemble before. Glad you enjoyed it.

Good Heavens!
Sharing a stage with both Billy Martin and Jessica Lurie?! An astonishing and very worthwhile experience. Your track flirts with ruction, but never loses touch entirely, maintaining a solid, steady march toward the outer reaches of the solar system (those cello-esque slides around 12:45 are particularly satisfying). Was your rig connected to the mixing board a la Ikue Mori? If not, please consider it in the future as a way to 'quote' others' contributions as the performance develops.
A very enjoyable track. Thank you.

I was not pulling off the board
I've been considering it - but haven't gone there yet. Yes - I was in heady company. Besides Billy and Jessica the others are pretty powerful improvisors as well. Thanks for the astute observations and kind words.
