Deconstruction of a Glance

Description
Funk tune from my 2014 release, Come In Funky. It was most complex mix on the CD, so I thought I'd share it here. The song itself was only supposed to run 4:50 or so, but Woody kept blowing and what was supposed to be a fade out turned into an extended coda, so the track runs 7:00. Sorry about that. I just could cut anything out.

My favorite section begins at the 3:13 mark. Moves into a different mode and nice solo opportunity for Woody Mankowski on sax.

Please read more about the album and projects that led up to it here: Come In Funky project page.

I also made this tune into a music video via my YouTube channel: TobinMueller on YouTube. The video has many kinds of glances and eyes to deconstruct :-) Here is the direct link: Deconstruction of a Glance video. As the video progresses, I add captions for humor and explanation, and a ton of photos of people (some famous, most not) and animals, hoping that the accumulative effect will be awe (at the diversity of life) and entertainment.

Btw, the artwork is made up of my eyes put through various Photoshop filters. A version of this collage hangs on our home's bathroom wall. Indeed, it creeps out those who think I'm staring at them while the, um, wash their hands. Keeps visitors away. Ha!

Other tracks from the album, mostly pre-mastered, shared on MacJams:
Forrest's Fire
Frankenfanny
Hitchhiker Tales
BONUS TRACK: What I Was Thinking While You Were Talking

Works for me
What can you say? A song that refuses to be over .. and goes on until it blows itself out .. that's not a bad thing.

With everything scripted so tight and precise through the opening portion, I find it's kind of nice to hear a soloist step up, take over and put a distinctive stamp on the ending.

Also: Love the organ!

Soloist taking over
Nice observation. Yes, Woody transforms my charts. I love working with him. It's not the first time I've had the band keep playing while he catches fire. Thanks for tuning in and taking a careful listen all the way through. Appreciated.

Nice mix as usual Tobin
I'm really digging that funk, something I know a friend of mine would really like. Enjoyed this thoroughly, keen on those breaks and have to agree there's a lot of ear candy around 3:13. Thanks for sharing.

Sonic Highway
I was thinking of you when watching the latest episode of Sonic Highway on HBO. I would highly recommend it. Dave Grohl is my favorite rocker out there, and this show does a great job of highlighting each city's music scene in which the Foo Fighters are recording (a deferent city for each song).

When it comes to Funk, they episode in Washington D.C. has great clips of homegrown percussion heavy FUfnk, especially Chuck Brown at GO-GO. Highly recommended! Made me want to go back and rerecord everything!

You know I love a Hammond!
Excellent playing all round Tobin, but as much as I like the brass section, for me, on 'phones, it's way too big in the mix. Soloing saxes sound great, just the ensemble stuff.
BUT, that of course is a personal preference.
Hammond is (as a Hammond almost always is) just great!
Hope you're well.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Blame the engineer ;-)
If you can believe it, the engineer on this album (Come In Funky) wanted to push the horn section even more! Although I do like the way the horn section wraps around you in headphones. I wish everyone could hear the mix without any horns, just the rhythm section, cuz its kind of cool, deconstructing the arrangement. But the horns, although arranged in a classic 70s style (the track is meant to eventually be licensed for a 70s era film project), they add a bunch of energy. Thanks for stopping by!

Quality
Tight, cool energy, clean, punchy and tons of fun to listen to. So many aspects to enjoy here, most of all the fact that there's someone with your accomplishment posting here.

Very cool and the organ solos are a delight! Can you tell us about the instruments you use?

Instruments
Thanks for the great comments. I have a collection of "antique" keyboards from a lifetime of playing and recording. Mainly I use a B3 and electronic pianos DX7 and Fender Rhodes. But I also have an Arp and used some plugins via Logic, and the studio had a Hohner Clavinet which I layered in. I even have one of the first digital samplers, an Emulator II+HD, that has some sounds I can't find anywhere else, even tho it uses floppy disks to load!

Hellooo Tobin!
Love your funk stuff! This is a rare treat, I love the horns out front, but I'm really into horns right now, don't say it!

What Warren said! A fine, filigree of funk on a Friday here in Oz (Downunder not Kansas :-)). Woody shines. Thanks, Peter.

From Oz
We also have a "Downunder" store in town that sells surfing related stuff, so I actually think of that before The Wizard Of or Aussie geography. We do have some fine contributors from Downunder! Thanks for ballooning into the the wild world of over-the-rainbow MacJams!
