Description
Inspired by the recent lunar eclipse and some lyrics I found in an old notebook, this is a new mix style for me - somewhere between the brittleness of my Logic Pro 8 songs and the overly round sound of my Logic Pro X stuff this year.

Lyrics are about "relationships and dreams" .............. but aren't they always?!

Gavin the drummer is getting better ;)

Lyrics
Blood Red Moon
©2014 Neil Porter

You say it doesn’t matter
So why’d you cover your tracks?
It’s been way too long
And I won’t look back

You’ve been sneaking in at night
Coming on so bright so soon
Then you’re trying to explain
The stain of the blood red moon

Don ’t want your words of wisdom
Secret handshakes and signs
Don’t want to hear no more
Of the company line

You’ve been sneaking in at night
Coming on so bright so soon
Then you’re trying to explain
The stain of the blood red moon

What if none of this is real?
What if none of this is true?
If it is the joke’s on me
Or is the joke on you?

You know I’ve been thinking
I’ve been doing my sums
How come I never see you
When the morning comes?

You’ve been sneaking in at night
Coming on so bright so soon
Then you’re trying to explain
The stain of the blood red moon
You’ve been sneaking in at night
Coming on so bright so soon
And I’m trying to explain
The stain of the blood red moon

free and loose groove...
Neil, this is a cool tune. Blood Red Moon reflecting the questions of relationships. I really like the entire feel of this song. Fits my memory of the seventies folk-rock songs. Nice way to finish the day, listening to another cool Porter song...

The joke is on me
Well .. it could be a song about an astrophysicist sneaking out with a telescope at night to observe the moon and other extraterrestrial phenomena .. you know, looking for secrets and signs of the universe.

Or .. not.

This place .. the somewhere between brittleness and the overly-round sound .. sounds really good to me. Everything is clear and crisp. Your production skills have become amazing.

Nice song
Nice song. I especially dig the "What if none of this is real?"-part. The sound you're getting there syncs so well to the lyrics - mystic.

I like this a lot Neil
Your mixes are really special the way you pan everything out, pro sounding. Nice hook and I really like the way the song crescendo's after the verse. A lot of nice noodling on the guitar. And yeah... I was there too snapping photos early that morning.

Aren't they all love songs?
'Lyrics are about "relationships and dreams", but aren't they always?!'

I recall, as a young teen, mentioning to a neighbor's mom, who loved Bob Dylan as I did (do), that I couldn't play all of Dylan's songs in the house, only his love songs (protest songs were banned by my conservative father). She replied, "Aren't all of his songs love songs?" I'll never forget that answer.

Thanks for continuing to share your talent and inner life with us. Much appreciated.

so 'pro' Neil. Great song and lyrics and the mix sounds just 'right'.....love the guitar and the surreptitious organ playing just below the surface...great harmonies too....whats not to like?, regards M

Nice groove! And a fine song. The lyric hook is clever. The complete package, Neil. I like how the acoustic still sounds clear and articulate in the mix. Skill. Right up there. Thanks, Peter.

I love the warmth of the instruments. The guitar cuts, but has a nice richness to it. I like the lyrics, like the feel of the song. Impressive work, Neil!

I really like the tone you get out of that Telecaster, Neil. And the rest of the mix ain't too shabby either - rich and full, with a cool and infectious chord progression - especially the chorus. Nice work man - enjoyed!

Great sound you have here
the little la la's in the verse before the break are perfect. In fact all of your levels are so delicately right. Great use of foreground - mid - and background. Nice how the bass is always up front but sits right in the pocket. Excellent.
