Description
For the four months preceding this one, my residual place of rest was a sandbar many call OBX. Its culture in the summer is a colorful collaboration between people on holiday, foreign adventurers, water sports enthusiasts, and vetted locals. I heard the Outer Banks’ call from Nashville, where I was attempting to push myself into the music scene from the humble dwelling provided by my car and a YMCA membership. While Nashville is undoubtedly recognized as a far superior foster parent to musicians than my summer destination, I heard the call and went.

On this island, my music and I grew in ways I could have never foreseen. I lived alongside a man who calls himself Christopher (aka. Unkle Krusty), woman who calls herself Claudia (aka. Auntie Luna), and made a true friend in a young woman who calls herself Li Shuang (aptly nicknamed Ghost Warrior Princess). Confidently following my invisible compass brought unimaginable and unforgettable experience, as well as these three remarkable friends who inspired, empowered, and were my teachers.

Life is like a game of chess with an ever changing number of players and an infinite number of possible moves. I play the game of life much like I play a game of chess. Most of the time, I know exactly the move I want to make. Sometimes, however, I evaluate possible move sequences until my mind fails me, at which point one move arises along with a warm confidence. Often the move I finally choose in such scenarios is one I mildly considered, if at all. To put the same idea in other words, if no concrete sequence emerges through planning and conscious logic, I tend to boldly step into the unconventional unknown to see what opportunities faith manifests.

Life is more complicated than chess. It is impossibly so. Through the precious relationships and experience of the summer now gone by, I have learned to pay more attention to the inner compass that guides every moment. I worry less about tricking my brain into the comfort of 5-step fool proof plans. I focus more on seeing and doing the truly important, and trust that the righteous brush strokes of each moment will guide me along the big and beautiful picture of my life. This song offers some words of advice on letting the work of your character give your life its direction. It is a simple song that explores the time-old counsel of lovers and dreamers; follow your heart.

Lyrics
Don't be a poor man in your mind
For what you imagine you will find

Don't be a jealous man in your mind
For what you steal will steal your time

Don't be a careless man in your mind
For one day your cares will leave you behind

Big picture, try to see the big picture!

Don't be a sad man all the time
Even on the darkest days the sun still shines

Don't be a guilty man in your mind
Boldly be yourself and you'll do fine

Big picture, try to see the big picture!

A generous man in his mind, looks inside to his heart
And he tries!
So look inside, to your heart and you'll find!

The big picture! Try to see the big picture!

Hey Noah
I always thought you might be a diamond in the rough! Great description,
nice playing, excellent lyrics, your vocals are strong but you got a little pitchy, still a better vocal/singer than most. Sounding an awful lot like John Legend, which is a compliment but also a word to the wise, be you dude! If I was somebody, and I'm nobody, I'd say you're real close to being really good. A little more polish and you're gonna be great! jd.

I greatly appreciate these words, I'm out in LA putting everything I've got into this. I'm with you 100%, both on pitch and being me. This is the work that I'm doing right now. Fully embracing my voice and polishing the rough vocal edges. Your words are encouraging, thank you :-)

Nice acoustic riff to kick things off, Noah. Good song, too. Nice hook. I like the immediacy of a singer/songwriter approach and this easily holds interest. Good luck, Peter.

Too much description?
Big picture explains itself. Look and you will see. A simple lesson, so hard to learn it seems.

This description was originally a blog post for the song, I thought of it as a separate work with hopes for it to have similar value as the song. Yes, that's what I'm finding is the most important lessons are the simplest ones that I've known my whole life, just hard to see till you've got some experience to work with.
