Description
This is more prose than Poetry, which I was inspired to write a few weeks ago after watching an art program on TV, where the artist Grayson Perry worked his art around the lives of various ordinary people and their lives. One story that touched me to tears was of a couple in their 60's who quite well off had their lives spoiled when the husband developed Alzheimer's disease. At times he was lucid and his memory working while at others it was non-existent and was, as happens, deteriorating fast. I got to wondering what happens to those memories and how sad it seems to be that,, memories are what holds us together and what tells us about our lives......so, when those precious things go, we are nothing but a shell of ourselves.....so sad.
I approached Paul to ask if he would allow me to use his music for added emotion to my words and he gladly agreed and suggested the piece I used here called " A Certain Longing", which added just the right feeling of emotion needed for this emotive piece, regards M

Lyrics
Faded Flowers; ( a commentary on Alzheimer’s.)

I watched the TV, as the ageing couple spoke about how their married life had been full of love and of how they both still clung to each other, even as a sense of loss now looms and grows around them.
Now, only one is left to know the love that once burned fire-bright to warm the soul, but which now, can barely glow, because of that dread condition that overcame, stole and robbed one of them, of their dearest thoughts.
It’s cruel and doesn’t care, so that the mind escapes to who knows where.
How sad, cruelly so, as those who, once bright as a button, fade it seems, into a paler shade of who they once were, their loved ones feeling bereft, as they remain unaware.
Their thoughts and memories done and spent like faded flowers in some precious vase; flowers that once had lit the room, but now lie faded, fallen and dead; only to glimmer softly in rare moments of lucidity.
“Do you remember that day? ” she asked as they pondered through their wedding photo’s.
“ Of course I do,“ he replied; hoping to prove that his mind was still vital and full.
But the look on her face told a different tale, as she sadly turned teary eyed, to inform him that only two days earlier, when shown those very same photo’s, recognition, along with the memories, had fully escaped him.
So, while kept with care, the images may remain indefinitely in precious wedding photo’s, his mind only allows him to recall intermittently, those memories of happier days. The illness robs him of the most precious thing a person can own; their memory; precious, because our memories are who we truly are.
Such a dread disease that overcomes not just the victim, but dear ones close as well.
Moved as i was by what I observed, my mind went into overdrive, as I pondered about those faded memories, like the metaphorical flowers in the precious vase and I wondered then, if living things like those flowers, even trees, had feelings too of life and loss; wondering if they’ll be re- born.
“Of course they will” I tell myself, “they fade and die and then regrow one way or another”, so we must hold the thought, that ALL that dies CAN be re-born, though in a time and a place that we can’t possibly know….so I think, we must just hold fast ……and pray it’s so.

Beautifully done, Maurice. Paul's piano piece is perfect for your empathetic and sensitive but melancholy prose. Moving, indeed. So glad I dropped by. Thanks, Peter.

Really pleased with the way this went, helped tremendously by Paul's music......though I'm well aware that a lot of people don't care for 'spoken word'......so I appreciate your encouraging comment, cheers M

Faded Flowers
Beautiful music and powerful story, told at the right pace and with heart-felt expression. It reminds me of the days when spoken pieces were more popular (as we head towards Christmas, The Small One by Bing Crosby comes to mind). Well done, Maurice!

The
TV show I saw with the couple being interviewed was also very powerful Philip and it really spoke to me. I haven't heard Bing's spoken word, but I'll look it up. Thanks so much for listening, regards M

Simply brilliant! So much more powerful when delivered through the spoken word. Singing might unintentionally trivialize. Paul's music fits perfectly. This is stunning! Bravo gentlemen.

So pleased
with your comment Andrew as I always have the feeling that you like 'words' or Literature. Yes, the spoken word seems to carry more weight or authenticity to something such as this subject.....but, it can be a little nerve wracking wondering how it will come across. Your positive words tell me that I went some way to getting it right, so thanks again, M

Quality
Everything you do, Maurice, is quality. This piece adds a deep sensitivity to the mix to create a valuable and poignant composition that speaks volumes. I'm happy my simple score worked out as a backdrop. I can't think of a better way to use my music.

Wow !
What a duo and with SUCH mega class ! So impressed with this and Paul your piano playing is such a great backing for this PRECIOUS gem of a Prose or Poetry. But what eve you want to call it, it really touching, moving, soul stirring and so much more. To one of the very best things I've heard as a talk-music background. Just can't say enough !

Beautifully done
My mother-in-law is suffering from Alzheimers and my own mother starved herself to death convinced she had eaten every meal given to her.

A terrifying and cruel disease that removes the one thing we have left when our bodies start to fail.

A beautifully judged set of words Maurice. Not mawkish or awkwardly sentimental.

You picked exactly the right music as well.

Thanks for sharing.

So pleased
you say that I got it right Dick as you're just one of the people experiencing Alzheimer's at close hand that this is aimed at, as well as those who like myself, do not have a close relative suffering this disease, but yet who need to know at least a little about it. Thanks For giving a listen, regards M

is a sad story but such a great performance Maurice, beautifully done and Paul's backing is the perfect accompaniment, your phrasing is perfect.
A very poignant message that you deliver so well. I always enjoy the spoken word and this was very much enjoyed.

Maurice
One of the most powerful set of words I think I've heard at MJ Maurice. As time marches on relentlessly for all of us, we have more and more contact with people with Alzheimers, and our understanding of the emotional and physical impact on all concerned seems to increase daily.
I think you've done a wonderful job on this, right down to the selection of Paul's beautiful piece. I'm absolutely impressed by your performance here.
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil
