Description
Something new before the end of 2014 ...... who'd have thought!?

This has taken a long while to write and post - I've had the backing tracks done for quite a while, but the lyrics took ages. "Flashback Jack" is something I read somewhere which I wrote in a notebook for future reference. It seemed a great "nickname" for a friend who seemed to be living in the past more than the present, although you could never be quite sure where he was when you spoke with him.

Anyway, it'sa tribute to another departed friend who had a lot going for him, but substances kind of got in the way. "There but for the grace of god" go a lot of us I suspect.

Musically it's pretty traditional jiguma - acoustic guitar bed, bass, drums and percussion with electric soloing. Gavin is playing the kit ;)

Best wishes to everyone for 2015!

Lyrics
Flashback Jack
©2014 Neil Porter

Flashback Jack was no-one’s hero
Someone saw him hangin’ ‘round
His goodwill stash was close to zero
Flashback Jack is back in town

He left a string of bridges burning
And his second chances stretched up to the moon

Jack’s been singing all his sad songs
All his heartfelt lost and found
Pumping out the “done me wrong” songs
Flashback Jack is back in town

He left a string of bridges burning
And his second chances stretched up to the moon

Too much time away
Coming home too soon
Running out of second chances
Coming home too soon

INSTR

He left a string of bridges burning
And his second chances stretched up to the moon

Flashback had a voice like honey
Minstrel mind and broken heart
Sang his songs for love not money
Flashback needs another start

He left a string of bridges burning
And his second chances stretched up to the moon

Too much time away
Coming home too soon
Running out of second chances
Coming home too soon

I got a nice Grateful Dead vibe from this. I'd be interested in knowing how you use Ozone. Do you find you can use a lot of the presets? Or do you have to spend a lot of time mastering with it?

Ozone
Hi Brian, thanks for listening and commenting.

I use Ozone 5 only on the master track - graduated from Ozone 3 earlier this year. I'm beginning to get to understand better how it works, but am a very, very long way from being proficient.

I use presets (some of which are my own) as a starting point, but almost always then go in and start modifying the various parameters until I get the sound I want. I've always had quite a brittle sound, and have made a conscious decision to change that with Ozone 5. So, I'm trying for better use of reverb in particular, but also EQs, both pre and post sometimes.

I think I tend to overdo my masters still by adding too much mastering manipulation, but am on a learning curve on which I'll hopefully get better with time.

I've just been listening to the first complete track list of my new CD using my new setup, and am very happy with the overall sound - even on some older tunes that I've just remastered.

To answer your second question, I think that the more mastering I do with Ozone 5, the quicker the process is becoming.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

So much to like...
Really... and I know my comments won't communicate nearly what a good song this really is.

The overall mix... the percussion... the chord changes, especially in the refrain... the vibe... the story about Jack... your subtle vocals mixed so well... the song title... and just a coooool song!

Cool work Neil
Well produced and I like how you varied the melody rhythm over the backing.

Sophisticated stuff!

Happy Christmas :-)

lyrics are
more effusive than yours normally are. Nice, understated figurative language. I feel like you could have allowed your voice to meander into something a bit thinner/less breathy at times in this song, but that's a minor thing. The guitar is wonderful.

Flashback Jack
Fine lyrics, Neil. Flashback Jack sounds like the name of a bushranger. Like it. The groove is pure jiguma, as is the fine production. I like the range of things I can tweak in Ozone, and that they are all in the one package. I will probably be down at Mallacoota in mid January, so perhaps we can catch up, finally :-) Take care, Peter.

Good song Neil. Great structure, I really like the spaciousness of this and the dead on use of percussion. Vocals are nice, rich. Master sounds great! I too struggle at times with Ozone 5 as you mentioned on one of the earlier comments, so powerful and can really take over the song. But, this sounds great!

I really like your vocal on this
higher key than usual? Whatever it is it's cool. Great production as usual. Lots of air in this. Definitely "there but for the grace..."
