Description
Golliwog is Steppin' Out is my rearrangement of Claude Debussy, Golliwog's Cakewalk, the final of six movements from Debussy's "The Children's Corner", published in 1908. The original series was dedicated to Debussy's daughter, who was three years old at the time Debussy wrote it.

The golliwog was a black character in children's books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. However, my take on the song evokes, instead, more the magic of "stepping out on the town", rather than a child's room. This is why I used the fantastical Portrait de Félix Fénéon (Paul Signac) to illustrate. I hope you enjoy the way I took Debussy's youthful melody and made it swing just a bit. Harmonically, I embellish Debussy's playful dissonances and completely replace the left hand rhythmic framework with chromatic syncopation. As in a few other arrangements, I expand the main themes and edited out secondary ones, shaping the song into more of a jazz standard format.

This is the 10th track on my latest solo piano CD, Impressions of Water & Light. Please check out my website for more details, where I post drafts of every track and provide some historical context to the entire project. This is one of the lighter, cuter tunes of the collection. I thought this might be a good track to share for the New Year :-)

iPod
I still use mine to play most all of my music, too. My phone gets interrupted too often with beeps and volume dips. Glad I am included on yours! Thanks for that. And Happy New Year to you!

Debussy swing...
Tobin, a delight to listen to your renditon. Your light and playful touch on the keyboard brings a smile to my face. I can almost picture one on yours as you play. Thanks for sharing this, and have a good and happy new year.

Thanks. It's just a simply ditty, almost like comic relief in the midst of for more involved arrangements. I love putting the "play" back into playing. Glad you enjoyed it, especially now.

Steppin' Out
It may still be a cakewalk .. but no kid's song is this : )

Interpreting another's musical piece is an established artistic challenge. Taking on another's musical idea and then making it your own by taking it somewhere else .. that's an even more difficult challenge. Somehow you have to inculcate the original while being original yourself. Not an easy thing to do .. but I think you have pulled it off here.

I like the multiple climaxes, which kept me guessing as to where things were going. My only critical comment is I thought the ending was slightly too soft.

Multiple climaxes
Fab comment! I don't often get anyone in my life thanking me for multiple climaxes! Love it!

The raw track from this recording had a HUGE difference in dynamics. It was one of three tracks on the CD that needed to be overly compressed (in my ears) to fit in with the rest of the album. Sadly. Very tough choices. We road the level bringing down several sections and chordal hits.

Making endings too soft has been a critique of my music for most of my career. As opposed to ending with a flourish, my inner ear, more often than not, wants to create a climax AND THEN a denouement or epilogue. Stage directors made me rewrite countless endings. It must be in my DNA.

Wonderful
Just some of the best jazz I've heard on any free music website. Love the stride piano feel at the beginning and keeps going strong. Such great intellectual Jazz with that city feel. Gershwin meets Tobin :)
